What is a collective and what did peasants have to give up to the collective? Collectives – Large farms operated by peasants as a group. Gave up land, animals, and tools. Josef Stalin The Mustache Years 3. Why did Stalin cause the Terror Famine? How many people were killed? Because the peasants were only growing enough to feed themselves after the “de-kulakization.” Between 5 and 8 million people died in the Ukraine alone. Stalin’s Terror Tactics: (pgs. 544-545) 4. What was the purpose of the Great Purge and what was its result? To get rid of Stalin’s political rivals (perceived and real). At least four million people were purged. Many think it was a lot higher. Communist Attempts to Control Thought: (pgs. 545-547) 5. How did Stalin use censorship and propaganda to support his rule? Through propaganda he made himself look to be a godlike figure. Touted the success of communism and the failures of capitalism. He censored the media so none of the failure got out. Soviet Society Under Stalin: (pgs. 547-548) 6. What were 3 benefits and 3 drawbacks of new Soviet society? Benefits: Free Public Schools, Free Medical Care, Free Day Care, Cheap Housing Drawbacks: Crowded Housing, Lack of Food, Removal of Religion Soviet Foreign Policy: (pg. 549) 7. Define Comintern - Groups who encourage world‐wide communism Map Activity: Shade the area the Soviet Union controlled on the map. (Hint: The Soviet Union included other countries besides Russia… Do your best to determine what areas were under Soviet control.)
