OCTOBER 2012 - Snohomish County Bar News 3
From the Desk of the
President
Stephanie Petersen
Called to Become A Champion
Just a few weeks ago, the Taylor Bridge Wildfire ripped
its way across through 23,000 acres of farm and forest land
between Ellensburg and Cle Elum. 51 homes or cabins
burned down. More than 1,000 firefighters fought the
blaze, which ultimately caused an estimated $8.3 million in
damage. People were evacuated and many lost everything
they had. At one point, over 400 rescued animals were
being sheltered at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds.
In the wake of all that devastation, something wonderful
happened. People heard the call for help and started to
respond. The effort was so great that eventually, the food
banks and shelters of Ellensburg finally had to start telling
people to stop bringing in donations. While the fire was burning, an Ellensburg attorney
started posting updates on a Washington State Association
for Justice listserve that I read. He described the
devastation happening all around him, as his neighbors
evacuated their homes and tried to save their animals.
His posts brought the horror of their experience to life:
“Animals were found wandering, with burnt pads, singed
hair, no ID, and with not a clue about what just happened,
hoping to connect with owners. Some stock owners didn’t
have time to do much beyond throw Fido in the pickup,
some of them opened their gates and let the horses and
cattle run for it.” Attorneys across the state responded,
including SCBA members. Within hours, people were
stepping forward with donations. One lawyer quickly
volunteered his pick-up and horse trailer and headed out
that Friday to deliver the much needed items. But that is not
all that happened. This effort soon grew from donations
of toothpaste and animal feed, into a joint effort between
the Kittitas County Bar Association and Washington State
Association for Justice to provide limited free emergency
legal services to victims of the Taylor Bridge Wildfire.
This is just one example of the power that rises up
from a collective effort, not unlike what happens here
every single day in Snohomish County, albeit usually on
a much smaller scale. The SCBA is fortunate to be filled
with generous people who regularly volunteer their time,
money and talent to help provide access to justice in our
community. I know when the call comes, SCBA members
do not hesitate to answer.
But what if we could do more, by doing it together?
That is exactly what I am asking you to do. Snohomish
County’s two primary civil legal aid programs, Snohomish
County Legal Services and TeamChild, receive a significant
4 Snohomish County Bar News - OCTOBER 2012
portion of their operating support through the Washington
LAW fund, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises
charitable funds for 25 civil legal aid programs across
Washington state. LAW Fund is the administrator of the
Campaign for Equal Justice—the statewide annual fund
drive for legal aid that happens every October. This year’s
campaign calls us to become Champions of Justice, by
donating to make “the promise of justice for all a reality in
Washington State”.
You can read Ann Brice’s article in this issue of the
Bar News for more information about the Campaign, but
please consider this very important point: the amount of
funds that SCLS and TeamChild receive directly correlates
to our legal community’s participation rate. When funds
are distributed next year, the LAW Fund will make that
allocation in part as a reward to each community for its
commitment to legal aid. The higher our participation rate,
the more money that will flow to SCLS and TeamChild.
As Ann explains, last year, for every $1 donated during
the Campaign, our Snohomish County legal aid programs
received $1.50 in support. So you see, it is not the amount
of your donation, it is the fact that you donate that greatly
impacts what is received from LAW Fund. It’s like getting
matching funds – and you can’t make money any faster
than that. So whether you can donate a billable hour, or
more, or less is not as important as the fact that you donate
something.
And if that were not enough, here’s another reason to
write that check in October – old school bragging rights.
The Campaign for Equal Justice Rainier Cup is awarded
annually to the county with the highest legal community
Campaign participation rate and is presented to the winning
county’s Campaign leadership each June at the Access
to Justice and Bar Leaders Conference. Last year, our
participation rate was 37%. That was good enough to land
us in fourth place statewide, behind both of our neighbors
to the North. Come on SCBA, we can do better than that!
In 2011, Whatcom County won the Cup for the second year
in a row with 48.34%. Chelan-Douglas had 47.35% of
their local legal community contribute, and Skagit ended
the Campaign in third, with a 46.61% participation rate.
Isn’t it time that we bring the Rainier Cup to Snohomish
County in 2012? We have about 1,000 attorneys in our
local legal community and approximately 700 of you are
SCBA members. Like many of your colleagues, you are
probably going to support legal aid anyway, so why not
make your donation through the Campaign, when it can do
the most good? The donation form is printed right here
in the Bar News, so you can print it out and send in your
donation this month. Also, if you donate early, Ann will
promise not to call you during the phone-a-thon. So what
do you say SCBA? Let’s answer the call together and make
the promise of “justice for all” a reality right here at home.

Professional law firms are moving their accounts to
local banks like Coastal because of the variety of ways we are
making it easy for them to do business with us:
Community Business Checking – designed for businesses like
yours that don’t deposit hundreds of checks each month.
IOLTA Accounts - Coastal Community Bank does not add any
additional fees to the accounting and disbursement of funds, making
these accounts not only convenient, but cost effective. CCB
automatically sends the interest to the State monthly.
Coastal Remote Capture* - Realize reduced operating costs by
making your deposits right in your office!
These are just a few of the ways we are helping attorneys
