Remembering ...
In the past few weeks we have lost three Honorary Members; Paul Yater,
Tommy McComb, and Dick Stratford. Each of these
gentlemen were hard working, dedicated Kiwanians. For
those of us that knew them, we’ll always have special
memories. Such as Dick being presened with an autographed photo of his favorite politician, Hillary Cliinton.
And Tommy agreeing to be Sunshine Chairman only if he
Don Williams
could have Lee James’s seat. (He got the seat.)

I wish to thank you for trusting me to continue working toward making this a great and productive club. I can not stress the importance

bring them to me for discussion. During the upcoming year, we must
continue to move forward and implement changes that are beneficial
to the club. May we proceed to a healthy and safe new year.

Programs for the month of September
Sept. 7th. - Bill Bacon introduced our speaker Greg Rowe the assistant director of EMS. Greg told us about the changes made in the equipment since
his last visit. The newest equipment cost about
$30,000.00 per monitor. Local EMS received 13
of these monitors. The progress of this program
has been astronomical. What it does allows them
to recognize a heart attack on the spot. It also allows the EMS to start reversing the effects of the
heart attack immediately. They can fax the data
they have to the hospital and cardiologist . This
allows the patient get to the cath lab immediately. This reduces the time for additional care. The
time from pick up to hospital is 30 minuets or
less. This has been a very successful program.
He next told about the new building located at
1436 Palmyra Road. The new building has an administrative end and an
employees end. There is a conference room designed to accommodate large
numbers of people and is built to be eco-friendly. Last year they responded to
22,000 calls. They are a very busy unit. They take advantages of any grants
they can get to keep up to date on changes incurred. They have the latest GPS
system which shows them the shortest routes and even if there is a road that
is blocked how to detour to avoid delays. Everything that is done is computerized and tracked. Greg invited anyone who is interested can come and visit
the new location. A question and answer period followed. - - Harris Povlot
Sept. 14th. - Ross Gatlin introduced our speaker Mandy Flynn. Mandy told
us about her real job working for the Cancer Coalition which serves 31 counties. She stated that every dollar donated to the
Southwest Ga. Coalition stays in the area. The
mission of the Coalition is to coordinate facilitate
and support cancer control throughout the region
to ensure Georgians have access to the highest
quality cancer education, prevention, screening,
treatment, and research. The Coalitions vision
is to be a national model of rural comprehensive
cancer control.
Mandy next told us things about herself and her
family. She said all of he sibling are also writers.
She told her age but being a gentleman I will not

put it in print. Mandy said one of the things she learner from her daddy was
humor and laughter can make anything better. Mandy has been writing her
current column for about 9 years. She had written other columns before writing for the Herald. Mandy read us a few of her past articles which were very
interesting and touching. A question and answer period followed. - - Harris

Sept. 21st. - Tom Mueller introduced our speaker known as “Albany’s Mr. Kiwanis” Past Governor Dewey Smith, assisted by newly elected Ga. District Secretary
/Treasure, Katrina Baranko. Dewey’s program was
about his recent trip to the International Convention
in Geneva. Dewey had a slide presentation of his
trip. He pointed out his two pieces of luggage for
his 10 day trip and his KIWANIS license tag. He left
on July 4th. There are many trains in Geneva. He
showed pictures of the downtown area and different
shops. There seemed to be some difficulty with the
slides skipping. Then he showed pictures of the actual convention. Trains are used to get everywhere.
There are very few cars used. Dewey’s hotel was
across from the train depot which he said he used
daily. After the pictures of the convention he showed pictures of the area he toured
after the convention. There were photos of the Matterhorn and other scenic photos
of the area. He rode on a cable car and showed views from the ride. Dewey felt the
country is the prettiest in the world. Dewey then spoke about the 97th International
Convention in New Orleans June 28-July 1, 2012. A question and answer period
followed. - - Harris Povlot
