The National Geographic Society
is a leading nonprofit that invests
in bold people and transformative
ideas in the fields of exploration,
scientific research, storytelling and
education. We support educators
to ensure that the next generation
is armed with geographic knowledge and global understanding.
We aspire to create a community
of change, advancing key insights
about our planet and probing
some of the most pressing scientific questions of our time. Our
goal is measurable impact: furthering exploration and educating
people around the world to inspire
solutions for the greater good.
For nearly 130 years, we have
been documenting our extraordinary planet and all that is in it. We
bring these stories of adventure,
world cultures and wild places to
life in exhibitions, live events and
experiences that are designed to
be shared with audiences of all
ages. We partner with museums,
science centers, schools, libraries, universities, galleries, zoos
and aquariums all over the world
on projects that are always relevant, interesting and current. All
of our experiences come with an
array of video, digital resources
and educational content. They all
feature incredibly interesting and
innovative people as well; people who inspire us to learn more
about our past and think in new
ways for our future.
We hope you will enjoy looking at
the latest in our traveling exhibition
offerings and please visit us when
you are in Washington, DC. at the

National Geographic photographer JOEL
SARTORE has visited 40 countries in
his multi-year quest to create a photo
archive of global biodiversity. To date, he
has completed intimate portraits of
more than 6,300 species. Photo Ark
aims to document every species
currently living in the world’s zoos
and wildlife sanctuaries, inspire
action through education, and help
save animals facing extinction in
the wild by supporting on-theground conservation projects.
Museums and zoos worldwide are
hosting Photo Ark exhibitions to
raise awareness. Exhibitions are

Five Minutes with Joel Sartore
(continued)
What is your goal for the project?
To photograph every animal species on
earth in order to get the public to care
about the extinction crisis, while there’s
still time to save species.
What sparked your love of
photography and/or animals?
My parents both loved nature. My
father took me hunting, fishing, even
mushroom hunting, all through the year
as I was growing up in Nebraska.
My mother appreciated the flowers,
birds, and squirrels that graced our
suburban yard and the town park
behind our house.
Between the two of them, I’ve never
thought of nature as anything other
than a joyful place and a vitally important part of life.
Photographing live animals can be
challenging. What are some of the
most interesting things that have
happened during this process?
I suppose what would be most interesting to your readers, would be the times
that the shoots were out of the ordinary.
Most of these shoots go extremely
smoothly because the animals have
been around people all their lives, but
sometimes the critters do “have their
way” with my backgrounds and sets.
How long do you think it will take
to photograph all 12,000 species??
We’re at 6,300 now, so another
10 years or so, maybe 15.
What kind of camera do you use/
prefer? Why?
I use Nikon D810 and D5 cameras
because they’re durable as can be and
sealed up against dirt and moisture.

I’ve been a Nikon guy all my life because
their cameras have never failed me, and
I’ve been in some very tough places.
Being a National Geographic
photographer sounds so exotic!
Can you identify a few favorite
locations or assignments?
Zoos worldwide are hosting Photo
Ark exhibitions. These exhibitions
highlight important conservation
work taking place in zoos, aquariums,
and wildlife sanctuaries around the
world. Each exhibition features
large-format prints in eight-foot-tall
kiosks, as well as a grid of many
more images to showcase the range
of species in the Photo Ark. Opportunities are available to customize
some of the kiosks for zoos where
Joel Sartore has photographed.

Antarctica was my favorite place by far. I
went on a National Geographic Lindblad
Expeditions trip and it was just amazing; pristine and full of towering blue
icebergs and penguins everywhere.
Besides that, Uganda was a treat in
that I got to do an assignment on the
wildlife of Africa’s Albertine Rift, including lions that sleep in the trees and
mountain gorillas.

National Geographic photographer
BRIAN SKERRY’s first encounter
with a female blue shark, which
occurred over 30 years ago, was a
galvanizing moment.
This exhibition will plunge visitors into the
underwater world of sharks, presenting
a comprehensive body of photographic
work highlighting Brian Skerry’s unique
combination of passion, skill, and
technique. The exhibition introduces
several shark species and explores what
makes these deep-sea dwellers unique,
important, and, increasingly, endangered.
Visitors will embark on a worldwide
journey to better understand these apex
predators and what it takes to photograph them, and will hear first-person
stories of close shark encounters.

Since that time, Skerry has gone to
extraordinary lengths—and depths—to
illustrate the beauty of these incredible
and misunderstood creatures. His latest
stories for National Geographic magazine
explore the importance of these predators to our ecosystem and the dangers
they face for survival. Skerry has made
14 trips all over the world to photograph
a multitude of shark species, including
tiger sharks, great whites, oceanic

THE FUTURE OF FOOD
Why are we interested in the future of food? Food connects us, nourishes us, and
defines us. In our rapidly changing, globalized world, we need to understand how
food has made us who we are today and how it shapes our future. This exhibition
takes a look at how we will grow and eat in the future to meet the needs of an
expanding population. Food does more than just keep us alive. It plays a central
role in connecting us to the land, to cultural heritage, and to each other.
