Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium®
Names Baby Orangutan!
Omaha, NE (February 2, 2015) – The female Bornean orangutan at Omaha’s Henry Doorly
Zoo and Aquarium, born on November 19, 2014, now has a name: Suri. The winner of the
naming contest is Brayden Porter.
The name Suri will serve as the baby orangutan’s nickname. Surianna will serve as its official
name. Surianna was chosen by the keepers because of its meaning: “red rose.”
Porter will receive a special Zoo-themed gift basket. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and
Aquarium’s Baby Orangutan Naming Contest ran from January 19 through January 24.
Guests were able to submit their naming suggestions into an entry box located outside of firsttime mom, Sepilok, and baby’s exhibit at Hubbard Orangutan Forest. The winner was chosen
by the keepers who care for the orangutans. A total of 1,580 names were submitted. Chip is
the father of the baby.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium houses eight orangutans, including its newest one.
Bornean orangutans are from the island of Borneo in Indonesia and are listed as Endangered
on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened
Species due to habitat destruction.
Starting today, guests will be able to help name the Zoo’s one female and two male African
lion cubs born on November 21, 2014. The naming contest will take place online at
OmahaZoo.com. Guests are asked to submit African names only and their meanings, if
