£1 million to kick-start important Newark estate regeneration project
Newark and Sherwood District
Council has been selected by
the government to benefit from
significant investment to kick-start
a regeneration scheme.
Darren added: “I think it is great
news they are investing in the local
area and I hope whatever funding is
allowed will be spent wisely.
“There’s a great community spirit
around here and I am sure people
will welcome money ploughed into
the local area.”
The funding has been awarded
through the national Estate
Regeneration Fund and council
officers have been working with
counterparts at the Department
of Local Communities to secure
almost £1m of support.
The £140 million national Estate
Regeneration Fund is designed
to accelerate and improve estate
regeneration schemes through
recoverable investments, helping to
boost housing supply and improve
the quality of life for residents in
estates across England.
This will be used to undertake
detailed appraisals and technical
studies of the Yorke Drive and
Lincoln Road Playing Fields.
It will be used to identify the
best approach for sustainable
regeneration and housing growth,
with engagement with the local
community a key ingredient in
taking matters forward.
Completion of the Bridge Ward
Neighbourhood Study by the
council and partners in 2012
identified the potential of new
housing on Lincoln Road Playing
Fields, accompanied by a
regeneration programme for the
neighbouring Yorke Drive Estate.
District Council leader, councillor
Roger Blaney, said: “This is
excellent news. We can now make
progress on the work we need to
do to put us in a strong position to
enable delivery of housing growth
and regeneration in one of the
council’s most deprived wards.”

Local residents were left surprised
but happy by the news, with
54-year-old Sharon saying: “I am
shocked they are putting money
into the area, but it is god news.
“It is long overdue and I hope the
money is put to sensible us and the
whole community can benefit from
it. Perhaps it would be good idea if
they ask the local community.”
The funding is available over five
years from 2016 to 2021. The
prospectus sets out the criteria and
requirements and seeks bids from
private sector entities - including
housing associations registered as
providers of social housing - taking
forward schemes that improve
or deliver additional homes, are
fundamentally viable, and carry the
support of local communities and
local authorities.

Newark’s 100-year-old resident still going strong
Donations expand
therapy services
Neurology treatments at Newark
Hospital have been expanded
thanks to the generous donations
of the Friends of Newark Hospital.
Donations amounting to £1,115
from the Friends have enabled the
department to purchase a double
neurology couch, which will allow
therapists to offer a greater range
of treatments including using it
as a plinth for gym situations and
physiotherapy exercises.
Wednesday 10th May 2017. 10:30am-2pm
Best Western Hotel, London Road, Newark, NG24 1TF
The wider couch can be lowered to
the floor and allows for the patient
and therapist to be on the plinth
at the same time, which means a
greater range of treatments will be
offered because of the space and
stability that the couch allows.
Over 30 friends and family
members came together to
celebrate Madge Glanville’s 100th
birthday in style. The celebrations
took place at Vale View based in
Newark, an Extra Care scheme
managed by local housing provider,
Newark and Sherwood Homes.
Madge, who was delighted to be
surrounded by her loved ones, has
lived at Vale View for three years.
When asked her secret to a long
life, Madge said: “I have always
eaten porridge once a day, which I
think has kept me young at heart.
“It has been so lovely to celebrate
my birthday with my family and
friends around me, which is all
I could have asked for. I told
everyone not to bring presents, just
themselves, but everyone has given
me flowers, which is so lovely.”
Assistant therapy practitioner,
Emma-Jayne Webster, said: “The
couch will make a real difference
to the service that we offer. It’s
a brilliant addition to have and
it will really benefit our patients
by assisting them to carry out
different exercises.”

THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
arrives in The Best Western Hotel, London Road and offers
local people the unique opportunity to come along and
have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a
firm spot cash offer without any obligation.
Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands
Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along
with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few
items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s
wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were
totally amazed to receive over £2,000.
Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel
estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So
why not take this chance to search through your attic,
drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting
on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find
our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly.
There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free
evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.
Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are
numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit
to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex,
valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000.
The pub is well known to local residents and is well placed
with plenty of car parking available.
So on Wednesday 10th May you have the chance to
visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers
absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of
professional valuations and now his expertise is available at
no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours
and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders
are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands
Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers
willing to pay for these articles.

Literature takes top billing at Magnus Academy as top authors visit
Jane said: “We were also visited by
Christopher Edge who entertained
and amazed the group by
explaining the science behind his
nominated book ‘The Many Worlds
of Albie Bright’.
He also recreated some of the
experiments too. The event was a
great success.”
During the authors’ visits, there

buy signed books and to spend
Magnus Church of England
Academy in Newark hosted a
literary week inspiring students
with visits by famous authors and
holding a library lock-in where
students spent three hours after
school in the library reading.
A blue plaque to commemorate a
renowned Newark philanthropist
has been unveiled at the
former library which carries his
family’s name.
The work and legacy of Sir William
Gilstap was remembered at a short
ceremony held at the Gilstrap
Building which is located in Newark
Castle’s grounds. Among the
guests was Sir William’s great,
great, great niece, Baroness
Miranda van Lynden MacRae.
The Grade II listed building is now
leased to Nottinghamshire County
Council which operates a Register
Office from there and where
weddings and civil partnership
ceremeonies take place.
In 1883, Sir William presented the
building, a free public library, as a
gift to the town in recognition of the
great kindness shown to members
of his family and to himself during
his time in Newark in his early life.
Sir William bore the £10,000 cost
of the library, equivalent in today’s
values to circa £2.5 million, himself.
He also offered financial support,
among a number of other projects,
to building a hospital in Newark and
in 1887, in official recognition of his
work, he was awarded a baronetcy
in Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee
Honours List.
Last year, the Friends of Newark
Castle marked the 200th
anniversary of the birth of Sir
William and expressed their wish to
mark his contribution permanently.
An approach was made to
Newark Archaeological and Local
History Society (NALHS) which
readily agreed to assist, using its
experience in erecting more than
30 plaques which are located
throughout the town.
Finance was sought and the
trustees of the Gilstrap Charity
awarded a grant which enabled the
project to proceed.
In his early life Sir William attended
local schools before taking up
work in his father’s wine and spirits
importing business, as well as
helping to run a hotel, trading as
Joseph and William Gilstrap.
The chairman of the Gilstrap
Charity, councillor David Payne,
said: “On behalf of the trustees I
am delighted that we are able to
support this initiative to recognise
the charity’s benefactor and to
mark his important contribution
to the town which continues
to this day through the work of
the charity.”
Baroness Miranda van Lynden
MacRae said: “I am absolutely
delighted with the plaque. He did
so much good and he would be
thrilled with the work that has been
done here. I’m so glad he is being
remembered for all the good he did
in Newark.”
Allan Towler, chairman of the
Friends of Newark Castle, said:
“I would like to thank all those
who made it possible - Newark
Archaeological and Local History
Society and the Trustees, and to
those who came to the unveiling.
I would like to pay particular
thank you to councillor Payne, the
chairman of the Gilstrap Charity, for
his help and support.”
Jane Johnson, from the Library and
Resource Centre at the academy
said: “The Festival of Words had
once again been a success.
“During the festival we were thrilled
to be visited by award-winning
author Kathryn Evans.
“She talked to students about what
inspired her own writing and to
discuss books and reading.”
Kathryn also delivered an
interactive writing workshop with
students in Years 7, 8 and 9,
which supported the literacy work
students are currently doing.

Council planning more action on litter for hot-spots in Newark
in Newark town centre and we
must strive to maintain these high
standards here and throughout
the district.
“The visible presence of a cleansing
operative in heavily littered
areas has been proven to have
a positive impact on reducing
litter. The additional resource
provided by these initiatives will
also have a positive effect on, and
complement, the council’s Cleaner,
Greener Strategy.
A pilot project to improve street
cleaning in Newark town centre
has been so successful it has been
made permanent – and a similar
scheme is to start shortly in a
neighbouring ward.
A litter-picker armed with a barrow
and the necessary equipment was
recruited in December, specifically
to further improve the standard of
cleaning on streets in the town.
areas of the district and follows a
study which identified locations
where there were a higher number
of complaints regarding litter.
Councillor Peter Duncan, chairman
of the leisure and environment
committee, said: “Both District
Council and Newark Town Council
have been extremely pleased with
the results that have been achieved
“We anticipate that by having a
barrow orderly in the Hawtonville
area that it will also have a similar
positive impact on what is one of
the district’s most problematic area
for littering.”
The study also identified that
greater education was needed
on the issue of litter throughout
the district and there will be a
campaign, starting in April, to
address the problem. This will
focus on fly-tipping and littering as
well as the authority’s garden waste
schemes, bulky waste services
and trade waste services as a
large amount of garden waste and
commercial waste is still ending up
in our hedgerows and laybys. As
part of the campaign the council’s
bin lorries will have information
displayed on the vehicle’s
sides, advertising services and
highlighting the problem issues.
The A1 trunk road also remains a
litter hotspot and the council has
been carrying out the necessary
staff safety training and risk
assessments to ensure that it
meets the relevant legislation
when carrying out limited works on
trunk roads.
In order to reduce the impact of
wind-blown litter, the council’s
waste and recycling business unit
has also funded 240 litre litter bins
for every A1 layby in the district.
Passing bin lorries will ensure these
are emptied on a regular basis on
the 16-mile stretch of highway that
the council has responsibility for.

East Bridgford company the first

New premises for
Osteopoise
Dying Matters can
help you
An East Bridgford company
specialising in care of older
people have become the first
national homecare provider to be
presented with a Queen’s Award for
Enterprise: Innovation.
After our busiest year ever in 2016,
Osteopoise Healthcaree have been
very busy planning for the future
and it’s about to get even busier.
Bereavement, death and dying are
not easy for any of us, although
they are something which we all
have to face in our lifetime.
Part of that planning includes our
new premises, so to meet our
current and future needs we have
moved across the car park to Unit 9
Moorbridge Court in Bingham.
As a nation of stiff upper-lipped
English men and women, we tend
to find the topic of death both
distasteful and awkward.
In an official ceremony, the
prestigious award was presented
to Home Instead Senior Care by
Her Majesty’s representative for
Cheshire, the Lord Lieutenant
David Briggs.
The Queen’s Awards have been
running for over 50 years and are
the highest accolades available to
UK businesses.
Home Instead Senior Care is the
first provider of its kind to receive
this award.
This is because of the very different
model of companionship-based
high-quality care that they brought
to the UK care sector in 2005.
The company has an office based
in East Bridgford which provides
care for 90 clients across Rushcliffe
and Newark & Sherwood.
They employ 65 CAREGivers who
deliver care and companionship to
people in their own homes.
Recognising the contribution Home
Instead Senior Care has made,
David Briggs said: “The Queen
has been so impressed with your
single-minded determination.
“To give the elderly what they want
- to cherish or dare I say to love
and to truly care for them - and
for that you are presented with the
Queen’s Award for Enterprise.”
Home Instead’s UK MD, Martin
Jones, received the royal
recognition on the brand’s
behalf with an historic scroll and
commemorative crystal bowl.
He told The Local News: “We are
the first and only homecare brand
ever to have received a Queen’s
Award for Enterprise.
“To receive the award for innovation
is, I think, a real reflection of the
truly pioneering approach we have
taken to providing care for older
people in Nottinghamshire and
across the UK.
“Receiving this award has been a
wonderful way for us to celebrate
the start of 2017.
“We’re looking forward to another
fantastic year ahead of us.
“This recognition for Home
Instead’s work is another step
forward in our mission to change
the face of ageing in this country.”
Richard and Jo Aram are the
owners of the Home Instead office
covering Rushcliffe and Newark &
Sherwood.
They said: “We are proud and
honoured that the care provided
by our team has contributed to
this award.”
The new offices and facilities are
fully accessible and the usual warm
welcome awaits you.
We now have a new dedicated
showroom and workshop facilities
all in the same building.
There’s also improved office
facilities for our ever-growing range
of products and services.
We have added additional storage
to house our growing fleet of
specialist products for pressure
care, specialist seating and
posture care.
This is particularly true especially
if you want or need something that
little bit different.
They will be promoting Dying
Matters Awareness Week, which
begins on 8th May.
Make sure you come and see us
and say hello. You can buy with
confidence and that’s official.
On 10th May, we will be hosting a
Coffee & Cake Day with cakes and
coffee courtesy of M&S, Waitress
and Tassimo.
Our customers over the last 17
years have come to expect the
very best of care and expertise
when it comes to making those all
important decisions about mobility
and healthcare products from our
extensive range.
These include beds, chairs, mobility
scooters, wheelchairs, stairlifts,
bathing aids and so much more.

“I spotted Eddy's potential after just
a couple of days working for us and
knew straight away he would be a
fantastic addition to the company.
“Our customers expect
professional, careful and
skilled operators who are easily
approachable if they have
any concerns.
They aim to help people talk more
openly about dying, death and
bereavement - and to make plans
for the end of life.
We have a good selection of
products available to see and try.
Osteopoise Healthcare are
approved as a trusted trader by the
“Buy with Confidence” scheme.
Tony Grice, owner of Prograss,
told The Local News: “With us
being independent, it is vital that
we recruit the right people with
experience and people skills. It is
for these reasons we are delighted
to welcome Eddy on-board.
Dying Matters is a coalition of
32,000 members across England
and Wales.
One of its newest members,
Artemis Cremation Ash and
Memory Jewellery of Stodman

This is in support of Dying Matters
and Beaumont House, our local
wonderful hospice.
If you are local, please come along
between 11am and 3pm and
support them and us.

to spread it around.
