Sports Round Up 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Dear all, I have been simply blown away the amount of sport that our students have taken part in since the start of the academic year. Participation levels in many sports have been fantastic as has the level at which many of our students have competed at. DCB students have participated and won tournaments locally within the ISAC competitions and further afield at ACAMIS tournaments and in Phuket. We have excellent sport facilities at the school and a committed team of coaches and players who I thank for their contributions so far this academic year. The future looks bright for sport at DCB and I am confident that together, we can build on the excellent platform that we have in place. Eddie Lydall Director of Sport 1 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up Senior School Volleyball Varsity Volleyball SCIS Shanghai Varsity Girls Mike Gatting Cricket Festival 2015 At the start of the academic year, former England Cricket captain Mike Gatting visited the school for the third time to pass on his wisdom to our budding cricketers. Six other schools from round the city joined us for a festival of cricket including an U9 Kwik Cricket and an U14 pairs cricket tournament. We are hoping to welcome Mike back to the school again next year. ACAMIS Championships 4th volleyball ACAMIS was one of the most interesting ones for Dulwich Beijing. With 6 new players to volleyball ACAMIS and the varsity squad, coming in fourth place was a massive achievement for our young vibrant team. With one of the youngest and giggliest teams, we were able to grow and develop together as players and have tremendous fun. The first day immediately threw us into the tournament with a win against DCS, our sister school, who in turn became the champions for the girls tournament. With many roars and tears the varsity girls volleyball team dig, set and spiked their way through the tournament, showing perseverance as well as enthusiasm and love for the game. I thoroughly enjoyed this year's ACAMIS, thanks to SCIS the host school, and I wish our varsity girls volleyball squad good luck for the years ahead. Ming Bourne 13DHI Eddie Lydall 2nd ACAMIS Volleyball 2015 was an unforgettable tournament. The varsity boys entered the competition with only one thing on their minds: the championship. With ferocity and fire, the team easily beat the first few challengers DCS, 2 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up ISB and SCIS. The fire was ignited and the team blazed through the first two days with only one loss to the skilled Suzhou Singaporean International School (SSIS). On day three we came ready to win. We knew we would have to play well to get to the final as we wanted to match up against Suzhou once again. The dampened flame turned into a massive fire as we beat Nanjing International School in two sets to secure our place in the final. The final was played at 2:00 p.m, Suzhou warmed up like they felt they had already won the tournament. We were anxious, excited and hopeful. All we had to do was play well and consistently and block their star spikers at each and every chance. In a highly intense battle, Suzhou walked away the winners. Throughout the tiebreaker the Dulwich Boys went point-for-point. Despite placing second, the passion, support and energy displayed in the finals made them champions. Samuel Kronick 13JPA ISAC Volleyball Championships Varsity Girls ISAC Volleyball 1st Volleyball season has now come to an end but what a season it has been for the U19 Girls Varsity team. The youngest team in years with only 3 players from the IB years and yet we still dominated the ISAC tournament here in Beijing. seasons I have experienced throughout my Dulwich volleyball career. Looking forward to another successful season next year! Rebecca Svantemann 12NEN Varsity Boys ISAC Volleyball 1st After the ACAMIS tournament two weeks ago, the Varsity Boys Volleyball team formed a bond that made us more of a family than a sports team. With this interconnection between teammates, we eagerly entered the ISAC tournament and beat the first contenders, BSB. The finals soon stood before us - the German School, our greatest rival. We knew we had to realize, however, was how far our superior teamwork would take us. We breezed through the first 2 sets. But the entire team reached a hurdle. We all became complacent. Losing the third set by 10 points, we knew we had to change our attitudes and bring back our team The dampened flame was reignited once more; we were an unstoppable force. Beating the German School by more than 15 points, we won the tournament. It was the last game for us seniors, but we were all elated as we left a great legacy for our younger teammates to follow. Sam Kronick 13JPA Junior Varsity Girls ISAC volleyball 1 st Absolutely undefeated. Not one set was lost throughout all of our game and as we continued to play together we grew together; not only as individual players but also as a team. It has been an absolute honour to play with this group of amazing girls and coming out on top for the ISAC tournament was just the icing on the cake that made this entire experience unforgettable. I believe that special mentions are in order to our two graduating players: Ming Bourne and Sarah Jølck who pushed the team to greater heights and were inspiring role models both on and off the court. Further thanks to Coach Tomaszun who never gave up on us and really made this season one of the most enjoyable 3 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up games including the finals and went undefeated (9-0) in their journey to being crowned champions. Their victory in the finals over WAB was impressive as the girls performed brilliantly. They have shown that their hard work and team effort paid off. It has been a fantastic season with all of the girls showing improvements in many aspects of their game. Note: Missing from the team photo are Juliette Aikman who had to leave for another school event and Moon Ng. Mr Schwartje Middle School Football U12 ISAC football 2 nd At 9:30, we all met up at WAB's Tiger Field and got warmed up. Compared to other teams we were much smaller with only 1 sub. Knowing this, we could assume that it would be hard, but were ready for any challenges. Eventually, I could see full teams and we all knew it was time for our first game against BSB (British School of Beijing) ... Based on previous matches, we had tied BSB but this time we were determined to win. We were holding off the ball for a while (thanks to our defenders) and managed to get some good chances up front. Many amazing corners were taken by Seung Yon Kim and awaited by Joy Ryu and Melissa Midzic. There was one corner that we wouldn't allow to leave the goal we were shooting against. We managed to keep the ball on the opposing teams side for a while, with many attempts. Finally a goal was shot, but by the defender of BSB, meaning already at our first game an own goal was shot. BSB gave it everything in attempt of getting a goal, but with some amazing saves by our Goalie, Virginia Ferri, and clearance from our defenders we managed to pull out a win. Right after our game against BSB, we were up against WAB. We were ready to face whatever. The game against WAB seemed like a very long game, but we eventually scored a goal by clearing the ball from our defence third and running straight up towards the goal, where the defenders both narrowed our Striker so the sides were vulnerable leaving us a perfect opening to shoot. After that we held of WAB for the rest of the game. Finally, it was our break! It was time to go eat, and thats where we spent our time chilling together as a team and preparing ourselves for, in our opinion, the toughest game that tournament being against DSP. After a long break we were ready to play against DSP. Returning to our regular formation we had started our game. Pia did amazingly working up front and really carried the ball forward giving us very good chances on shooting with great support from the Mid-Fielders. We had some amazing far kicks done by the defenders, making it tougher for DSP. After holding DSP off for a long time they succeeded in shooting a goal. For the rest of the game, we played better than we had ever played Football and in my opinion, every single individual was giving it there all. Keeping in mind that we were the only team that was strong enough to not allow DSP to shoot more than 1 goal, felt like a great accomplishment to all of us. The Award Ceremony had started, and we could barely stand out of exhaustion. We were all huddled up together, anxious to find out the results. The final placements were announced rewarding us as 2nd Place as well as a Sportsmanship Reward. We could not have felt more proud of ourselves and thankful for our Coach, who without none of this would have happened. Ms Engels we owed our achievements to and our improvements in 4 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up Football. The Tournaments Experience I wouldn't change for anything, and what I've learnt through this entire Football Season will last us, and speaking on my teammates behalf, a lifetime. Melissa Midzic 7KWA U13 Girls ISAC football 1st U14 Girls ISAC football On Saturday the 24th of October the Dulwich U13 girls team played in the ISAC football tournament held at Harrow. We had an active and successful day, playing 4 matches all together, each had 20minute halves. The first team we played against was ISB, we were a little nervous since it was our first game and didn't play our best but the game finished a tie 0-0.The next game was against Harrow. We played amazingly despite their great defender we scored 3 goals! One by Nina Zimmerman One scored by Rachel Kwon and lastly one by Wei Lin. The next match we played was against WAB. We had another amazing game, winning 3-0 again! Caterina Bossi scoring 2 and Wei Lin scoring 1. The defenders played great too, they cleared every ball that came their way. The last game we played was against BSB and we won 2-0, goals scored by Rachel Kwon and Wei Lin. Overall we came first place, and had lots of fun! Nina Zimmerman 8NST 2 nd In the build to the final ISAC tournament we played against the opposing teams at least once but there nothing that compared to the actual excitement on Saturday the 24th of October. This was the date of the U14 ISAC football tournament, where the matches were played in a round robin format against BSB, WAB, DSP and ISB. Our first match was against BSB, the match was fairly straight forward with some amazing goals scored by Erica Dudek, Issy Elliot and Maggie Chang. The end score was 4:1 to DCB. The next match was played against the powerhouse , WAB. We played our hardest throughout the whole match, however using great tactics and skills WAB scored four goals against us. The highlight of that match was the amazing goal shot by Maggie Chang at the end of the first half, making the score 4:1 to the Western Academy of Beijing. After that unfortunate loss we were eager to win the next game against the german school, which we did, our team played very well with each other, using personal skill to benefit the whole team. DCB won three points to one, the goals were scored by Issy Elliot, Jing-Ying Sun and two by Erica Dudek. The very last match we played ,after many tiring games, was against ISB. The Dulwich team seem to get a goal in the whole of the first half but we pulled trough to equalise the score to two all. One of the goals was shot by Marjorie yang whom beautifully directed a corner kick ,by Erica Dudek, into the opposing goal and the other equally as impressive goal was scored by Maggie Chang. At the end of the day the team achieved second place and were awarded the 5 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up sportsmanship trophy. This year s ISAC was a great experience for all involved. Erica Dudek 9KGA U13 U12 ISAC football 3rd Today The Dulwich U12 team travelled to BIBA to play in one of the biggest football tournaments throughout international schools, ISAC. Our first game was against Harrow which we tied 2-2. Secondly we played DSP, the german school which we made a great comeback from 1-0 down to make it 2-1 to us. Great assists and goals to Max Elliott, Kaden Schiff and Linus Yu. After that we had a very important game to decide if we would come 1st or 2nd in our pool. Against BSB we got on to an early lead, and that lead, stood on its own until in the last 30 seconds before BSB scored a shocking goal to tie it, taking us down to 2nd place in our pool. For the 3rd and 4th playoff we had to play WAB, one of the best teams in the tournament, but we shook them off and tied 1-1 at the end of the match. Of course we needed to see who would get 3rd and who would get 4th therefore we played extra time with 6aside and golden goal rules in place, who ever scores next wins. With pressure on the whole entire team we constructed a great play leaving Jeffery Weng to score an absolute thriller of a goal to win 3rd place! Kaden Schiff 7BDS ISAC football 3rd It was the 24th October. The DCB U13 boys football team went to ISB with confidence. We knew the opposition we would face would be hard to beat. When we arrived at the football pitch we started our warm-up, as we were doing our warm-up we received word that the schedule had changed. This meant we would b playing a team that we had never played before. We didn't know what to except so we decided to play one of the strongest lineups we could. We soon found out that this wouldn't be a very tough opponent. We won the first match comfortably. The second match would be harder, we would play BSB. We played our strongest team. After we scored a few goals some fresh legs like Fred, Gavin and Evan. We also won our second match. Now we would play our rivals and the toughest doubting ourselves and this cost us the match we lost 3-0. Now we would play a match against ISB to decide who would go to the final. It was a tight match a save off the line by Tommy would keep the score at 0-0, there were a few minutes left when Matthijs scored the winning goal. We had made it to the final. In the final we would have to play WAB once again. Now we knew we would have a chance at winning despite our earlier loss. The match started. WAB scored within the first five minutes, but our heads didn't drop we knew we could still win. We equalised. Leo had leaped above everyone else to head it into the left corner of the goal. It was a very tight match, despite some amazing saves from Tommy and 6 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up some great tackles and interceptions by Callum, Evan and Lewis, WAB scored. We were starting to get tired ,especially Owen who had been sprinting around the pitch the whole match, and they took advantage and scored another goal. We all gave 110% until the final whistle. Sadly we couldn't win, but we could look back on the tournament and be proud. day due to the tropical rainstorms! Matthijs Verheijen 8JMI U14 ISAC football 2nd DCB were unlucky runners up in the Under 14 Boys ISAC competition. DCB eased their way through the group stage with a 2-2 draw with DSP and a 5-1 victory over ISB. In the semi final, strings like a puppeteer in midfield and world class saves by goalkeeper Charlie Shum led to a 10-1 battering of WAB. DSP also progressed to the final. In the final, an injury to Stanley Mao resulted in formation reshuffle. Captain Luke Sampson was outstanding at the back, thwarting countless attacks. On the stroke of half time, box-to-box midfielder Chris Kim took charge of the game, scoring a thunderbolt goal, silencing the parochial German crowd. Mr. Lowish rallied the team at half time and reminded everyone not be complacent. Unfortunately, an erratic kick across goal led to an equalizer and poor communication resulted in another goal, handing a come from behind 2-1 victory to DSP. Mr Hermans Phuket football trip From November 5-8th forty of our students from Year 5 to Year 8 attended the annual Phuket Football Sevens competition hosted by the British International School Phuket. The tournament has developed in to one of the premier football events in the region with schools participating from all over Asia. Our teams all performed amicably but unfortunately the competition had to be cut short on the final U11 Girls In Phuket the weather was hot, something the girls were not used to and this affected how we played. However, after a shaky start of a 2-0 loss, we showed Phuket how we could play by winning our next game 4-0. Unluckily, we drew our final game as in the last 30 seconds Tanglin scored. This made us third in our pool. The next day of games begun at 8am for us and what a match! Another 4-0 win followed shortly by a 30 win. During this game, torrential rain poured but the girls continued playing with sheer determination as the grass became saturated with water and it was extremely difficult to dribble let alone score! Due to the rain, the remaining matches were cancelled which meant we knew we would either be placed 9th or 10th. But from our superb performances I know we would have received a well-deserved 9th performance and every player has improved from when we first began to train that every one of them deserved an award! It was a pleasure taking them on the trip and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves representing DCB. Thanks Ms Haldane for training and coaching them at the tournament! The most improved player in the girls team this tournament was Uma, and the most valuable player was Amelia well done girls! 7 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up -trick, the third of which was an absolute screamer into the top corner, and Kris Kim scored the other to make the final score 4-0. This result left us top of the table and feeling very positive. However, there was another long wait until our final game of the day, which also happened to be against the tournament hosts, BISP. The school has a link with the Brazilian team, Cruziero, and their professional coaches have clearly been working hard to get to a very high standard. Our boys fought hard and were incredibly unlucky to lose 2-0. Overnight, the heavens opened and, whilst we still woke to sunshine, we arrived to very boggy when playing our final group game, which was against STAB, a team that had won all of their other games, including beating the BISP boys who had beaten us the day before. The boys survived the pressure of a very good team almost all the way to half-time, but STAB scored a very good goal and gave the boys an awful lot to do to get back into the game. But they Unfortunately, STAB were simply too good and by the final whistle the score was 3-0. The boys left the pitch with their heads held high and began to prepare for our next fixture against U11 Boys Thursday bought another beautiful day and the first day of competition. Having watched all three of our other teams before their first fixture, the boys were more than a little fired up before the first goal was scored by William with a glorious shot from distance, and then the flood gates opened with Zion and Eric both scoring to make it 3-0 at half-time. The game was so one-sided that our goalkeeper and captain, Pierrot, came out on pitch for the second half and scored a well-taken goal for himself. The game ended 5-0 and left the boys hungry for more. However, they had to wait for quite a while until the next game. In this time they were able to watch all of the other opposition and suss out who would need to be marked and closed down. Due to the long wait, nerves were high by the time the second game arrived, not helped by the fact that our opposition, BISV, had beaten us last year 4-2. But, lead by our inspirational captain, the boys went out and dominated a Pitches became bogs, then puddles and, when the rain refused to stop, lakes. Due to unplayable and unsafe conditions, the tournament had to be abandoned. We headed back to the hotel absolutely drenched but also very proud of our achievements, and had another afternoon in the pool (after all, we were already wet!). In the evening, we went out as a whole squad for a celebration dinner at a local pizza parlour, where Pierrot gave a brilliant Most improved player was shared between Niclas Schou and Jun Kim. He never ever 8 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up gave up and really deserved this most prestigious award. Overall, it was a very successful tour that left me a very proud coach. Our Year 6 boys will all be pushing for a place in the U13 squad next year and our Year 5s will almost certainly be back to represent us again. Special mention must also goes to Zongxu, who was terribly unlucky to miss the whole tournament due to illness and was missed by all Thanks to Mr Alford for training and coaching the team at the tournament and the write up! 9 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up game 3-0 (against DC Singapore). We were all getting snacks next to the canteen when something happened that people who live in Masses of water poured down on us, showing us what tropical rain is like. The pitches turned into pools and it became impossible to play on them, so all the matches left had to be cancelled and all teams had to return to their hotels. After the rain had stopped we all took a dinner we went to a pizza place. In the evening Ms. Sadler allowed us to have one last swim. U13 Girls On the 4th of November at 4:45am, our Phuket Football trip started. We took the 8am flight to Hong Kong and from there we took a flight to Phuket. The following morning, on our first day, we made our way to the British International School of Phuket for a 2 hour training session. The scorching sun in Thailand was certainly a contrast to the 10 degree temperature in Beijing! We spend 2 hours training hard, though sweating uncontrollably and taking a countless number of water breaks. We spend the whole afternoon at the hotel, taking swims in the prodigious pool and going to the nearby supermarket. Our first competition day was eventful. We woke up at 5:30 am, already feeling anxious about how our day was going to go. Our first match was against the winning team from the previous year- Tanglin Trust Singapore. We put on a remarkable fight and secured a 0-0 tie. The second match of the day resulted in a well earned, 3-0 win against ISPC! The next game was probably the most significant match of the entire tournament (against BIS Vietnam), we gave it our all and with only a few minutes remaining the score was 2-2. However, in the last 3 minutes the opposing team scored a confounding goal. And so the game ended with a 3-2 loss. Despite the game against Vietnam we came back strong and won the last game, against BISP, 6-0. And so our treasured Phuket trip was over, we flew back to Beijing the following afternoon. Thank you, Birte Muller 8JGI U13 Boys The boys managed to win 3 games (3-1 vs Garden International School, 3-2 vs Stonehill & 5-1 vs Dulwich College Soul) and we lost 3 very tight games to British International School Phuket, International School Kuala Lumpur & Malborough College. A very amicable effort from all of the players! All of the boys contributed hugely both on and off the pitch with some outstanding individual performances from all of the squad. When it came to handing out the awards on the final night, Callum Jones was awarded most valuable player and Mark Li was deservedly awarded the most improved player. A real highlight for me as the coach was seeing the boys bond and gel together throughout the tournament. This was especially evident when the chips where down. A really positive trip and one the boys and their parents should be immensely proud of. Mr Hurworth Our final competition day was a success. We were playing for 9th out of 20 teams. Our first match of the day and last match of the tournament was a complete triumph, our team played tremendously well and we won the 10 2015 Block 1 Sports Newsletter Sports Round Up Tennis ACAMIS Tennis Championships Tennis Championships in October. The tournament was attended by sixty students from schools in China and Mongolia. Our students performed exceptionally well. The Harry Sha and Gabriel Spooner played very well throughout the tournament but unfortunately met their math against a very strong pairing from Macau in the final. performed exceptionally well and dominated the completion to finish as winners. What made their victory even more impressive is that both girls are still only in Year 9 and ACAMIS is an U19 tournament! I would predict that there is more success to come in the future from this pairing. On Friday, early in the morning, Skia and Olivia played against the second team in their pool and beat them with confidence and out standing teamwork. This meant that they got into the division 1 semi-finals. Kristen and Mika played their first round match in division 1. But sadly, they lost 8-6 6-8 and 8-1 against ISB 6, but still kept their heads held high. On the last day of the competition, DCB 1 was successful against ISB 6, winning 8-1 in doubles and 8-0 in singles, ensuring their place in the finals against WAB 1. Kristen and Mika played for 5th and 6th, and with an amazing performance, they got 5th place. In the finals, Skia and Olivia lost their doubles 8-3 but got back in their singles. Skia had asthma halfway through her match but still won 8-3. Olivia, on the other hand, at 7-6 had a 30 minutes deuce and won that game. Which meant that they came first.
