SUMMER 2015
Setting Campers Up For Success
Camp Goodtimes is a safe, supportive and fun environment for your child to experience being away from home. Here are
some tips to help prepare your child for their experience at camp.
1. Provide the camp team with any information that may help to ensure your child has the best possible
experience. The more information we have about your child, the better able we are to support them.
Include your child in this process by making pre-camp preparation part of their camp experience, which
can build anticipation and help them understand what to expect.
2. Talk with your child about their expectations and how they are feeling about going to camp. Encourage
them to make realistic goals that can build excitement about the experience.
3. If your child is not used to being away from home, try preparing them by having them ‘camp out’ at a
friend’s or family member’s house overnight. This can build their confidence and ease separation
anxieties.
4. Campers are encouraged to bring a comfort item from home to help provide security. This can include
things like stuffed animals, photographs or books.
5. The Camp Goodtimes website is a great place to learn more about camp and to learn about other
campers’ positive experiences. You will find answers to FAQ’s, photos, videos, and much more at
http://www.campgoodtimes.org
6. Reassure your child that the staff is there to support them. Knowing that there are adults on site to
listen to them, and support them can help alleviate worries about being away from their family.
7. Label your child’s belongings using iron-on labels, permanent marker or bright nail polish. This is
another way to provide comfort and security for your child while away from home, and avoid misplacing
important items.
8. Please contact Bayley Gale, Camper Experience Director, to talk more about making Camp a positive
experience for your child. You can reach Bayley at [email protected]

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
The Cops For Cancer.
The Cops For Cancer…
Who?
Junior Rider: Ah, you don’t know about
the Cops For Cancer? Let me tell you all
about being a Junior Rider!
Cops for Cancer is an exciting annual
event that takes place each fall with over
a
hundred
law
enforcement
and
emergency services personnel from
across the province. They brave all types
of weather as they cycle up to two weeks
across the daunting terrain of Vancouver
Island (Tour de Rock), Northern BC
(Tour de North), the coast of British
Columbia (Tour de Coast) and the Fraser
Valley (Tour de Valley).
As they ride, each Team stops in
communities along the way, visiting
schools and other supporters while
raising
awareness
and
collecting
donations for Camp Goodtimes and
pediatric cancer research.
Each Cops for Cancer Tour has a Junior Team who accompanies the riders at
events along the way. We would love you to be a part of that team! As a Cops
for Cancer Junior Team Member you will:
•
Be partnered with a Cops for Cancer Tour Rider
•
Attend fun activities and amazing events leading up to the Tour
•
Receive a special Junior Team t-shirt and hat
•
Ride in the police car escorting the riders and show up to your school
with the team
•
Invite your family and siblings to join in the fun as well
If you are attending Kids Camp this summer, you will meet several riders at
the casino where Cops For Cancer riders come to play carnival style games
with Camp Goodtimes campers! When you meet the riders, feel free to ask
them questions about being a junior team member as they would love to see
you on the tour.
You are the inspiration for the riders and the reason they are committed to
riding and fundraising. We hope you will join them on their ride in September
and October!
THE NEW DINIG HALL – Oooo! Aaaaah!
For anyone who has been lucky enough to visit Loon Lake since
camp last year, a highlight of the visit has likely been a tour of
the construction site of the new dining hall by Karim, the visibly
excited facility manager. Camp Goodtimes will be the very first
group to use the new building – which at 6500 square feet has
more than double the capacity of the current dining hall. It
features a larger, more modern kitchen, a spacious patio, and
even golf cart parking!
In addition, Loon Lake (like Camp Goodtimes) has a strong
respect for tradition. The centerpiece of the new dining room is
the fireplace from the Old Staff House, which was formerly
where the new building is now. You’ll also be interested to
know that the timber that makes up the structure has been
harvested from the Malcom Knapp Research Forest itself, and
was in a drying shed for over a year. We’re looking forward to
having it filled with campers, and using the new space to find
new ways to make meals fun!
