Your donations gave Zoe the care she needed to heal her broken jaw. When Zoe came to HALO with a broken jaw, we knew we needed to move quickly. You could smell the infection in her jaw from 3 feet away! We rushed her to the vet to determine the extent of her injury. The prognosis wasn’t good. She would need a special fixator to stabilize the broken bones while they healed and that particular vet wasn’t able to do the surgery. But we knew you wouldn’t want us to give up on her! We gave Zoe antibiotics to fight the infection and pain medication to keep her comfortable while we searched for a vet who could perform her special surgery. Thank goodness, a fantastic team of vets at Midwestern University agreed to take on Zoe’s special case. But between visiting two vets, a specialized surgery, and recovery care, her treatment was going to be expensive! So we sent you an emergency plea. You were amazing! Within 2 days, you donated more than $2,000 dollars to give Zoe the veterinary care she needed! Your donations gave her antibiotics, pain medications, x-rays, advanced surgery, a specialized medical device, a soft bed to rest on, and wet food that she could eat without chewing. And the staff and volunteers made sure she was comfortable and cared for on your behalf. Thanks to the great vets at Midwestern University, Zoe’s surgery went well. They put 7 screws in her jaw and attached them to a special external fixator to hold everything in alignment while she healed. Zoe continues to recover in foster care and is doing well. Thanks to you, Zoe is no longer in pain and is on her way to finding her forever home. For the latest updates, check out our Facebook and Twitter. The goal of the challenge is to raise funds for treatable pets, so that medical problems don’t hold them back from finding a forever home. Purina will be matching gifts up to $25,000 and a group of anonymous donors will be matching gifts up to $8,500. That means your donations will be matched up to $33,500! We will also be launching a new online crowd funding page. So you’ll be able to share the fundraiser with your friends and family and watch as the counter rises towards the goal! Zoe, the Schnauzer featured on the front cover, is one of the many treatable pets that we’ve cared for this year. Her case was extreme, but we care for runny noses, ear infections, and more every day. We hope you’ll join the 1+1 Challenge by donating and spreading the word this September. Together we can make sure that our homeless pets get the care they deserve. Sebastian came to us with his leg so badly broken that it needed to be amputated. He healed well and soon found his forever home. This September, your donations will be matched to help treatable animals like Sebastian. ADOPT-A-BULL WAIVED FEE PROMOTION RETURNS FOR 3 MONTHS! Your support will help change the fate of more bully breed dogs On July 1st, HALO launched our second Adopt-A-Bull waived fee promotion, and this year the special will continue for 3 months! During last year’s pilot you all showed the dogs your love and support. Sponsorship fees poured in. And adoptions of bully breed dogs increased by leaps and bounds. Thanks to your support, last year’s promotion helped us find homes for 35% more bully breed dogs. Zailee was one of the special dogs who found her forever home during the Adopt-A-Bull promotion last year. Let’s keep it going for all the other dogs like her! We knew we had to find a way to keep this life saving program going. So we reached out to our partners in the animal welfare community. We told them how much these dogs needed them, and how you had already helped prove that waived fees could save their lives. Thanks to all of you who helped make the pilot a success, Fix. Adopt. Save. and Best Friend’s Animal Society have provided grants to sponsor adoption preparation and waived fees for our bully breed dogs! You can still help too! You can Sponsor-A-Bull for $125 dollars by visiting our online donation page. We can’t wait to help these great dogs find their loving forever homes. Spread the word! Together we can save more lives! JULY 1ST-SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2015, ALL BULLY BREED MIXES, 6 MONTHS OR OLDER WILL HAVE THEIR ADOPTIONS FEES WAIVED! 2 Your Support Saved the Lives of These Animals and Their Moms and Dads Can’t Thank You Enough Hello HALO! I just wanted you to know that I am currently a deployed soldier about to serve overseas for our wonderful country! I am proud to be doing so. I also wanted you to know that I adopted Sweet Pepper, a year ago in March from HALO in Phoenix. She is simply a delight in our lives, love, love her! Here she is hanging with my daughter, Kori (who was also with me when we adopted her) and one of our cats, Charlie (who loves her). We love her SO much! I also want you to know that your organization is directly in my will (not for anytime soon, but you are in my will upon....someday....) LOVE HALO <3 HALO Animal Rescue A SPECIAL THANK YOU FROM OUR ADOPTERS Whitney Hello HALO! I adopted my cat Tyler from HALO all the way back in May 2006. It was love at first sight when we met at the PetSmart at Camelback Colonnade. Tyler was already 7 years old at the time but the sweetest bug who snuggled up to me immediately. We just celebrated 9 years together and he’s still doing well at age 16. He’s been with me through a move to Washington, D.C., meeting and marrying my now-husband (who is just as attached to Tyler as I am), adjusting to a sibling kitty and now awaiting the arrival of his first human sibling any day! I would encourage anyone considering the adoption of a senior kitty to go for it. They have years of love to give! Valerie Dear HALO, My husband (Bill Mason) and I rescued a cocker spaniel you had named Davida on Jan. 1 of this year, and she’s such a delight. We named her “Phantom”, because she has a mask on her face like Phantom of the Opera. She’s very happy in our home, with an older sister “Bambi” and lots of love. Her tail is non-stop; all we have to do is look at her with a smile and that tail goes crazy. We take Phantom and Bambi to the dog park at least twice a day, and they love that. Phantom loves to run laps around the place, and chase away birds. They enjoy walks around the neighborhood. They also have a grassy backyard and patio that they enjoy. Just wanted to thank you to you and your staff for helping us adopt this wonderful doggy. We have had a very good experience with HALO, and would adopt again through you when the time comes. Thank you for all you do! Leslie Fountain 3 HALO Animal Rescue YOUR DONATION DRIVES ENRICH THE LIVES OF SHELTER PETS Ever wonder what happened to that $10 you donated to your work’s fundraiser? At HALO, it vaccinated a puppy against deadly diseases and protected him while he waited to find his forever home. Public fundraisers and donation drives led by thoughtful people like you make a huge difference to the animals every year. With so many animals to care for we can’t do it alone. So, thank you to everyone who organized or donated to a donation drive for the pets! YOUNG HALO SUPPORTER ASKS FOR DONATIONS INSTEAD OF PRESENTS In celebration of her 17th birthday, Hannah Davis collected over $1,000 dollars plus a barrel full of toys, food, and treats for the pets! Like many young people with a love of animals, Hannah was disappointed that she couldn’t volunteer directly with the animals until she was 18, so she wanted to try to find another way to help. Hannah explained, “I know that I am very fortunate and that there are many animals that deserve help. My family and friends share my passion for helping animals, so I decided to ask for donations to HALO instead of gifts for my birthday.” What an amazing young person! Will loved playing with the toys Hannah and her friends donated. The toys you donate brighten the days of the cats and dogs while they search for their forever homes. 3 Easy Ways You Can Help 1. Buddy was one of the lucky dogs who found a forever home that day. His adopter, Michelle, sent us an update, “I'm very happy to tell you that Buddy is now my son's Emotional Support Animal. Buddy is such a blessing to my son, Peter, who has autism. Thank you again HALO for allowing this sweet boy in our lives.” On top of all the great adoption news, a HALO alumni Chihuahua won King! HALO is proud to be one of Purina’s Shelter Partners. Purina helps us make sure that our animals always have the nutrition they need. They even provide go-home bags to help our animals have an easy transition between the shelter and home. And Tidy Cats helps us make sure our cats and kittens always have clean litter boxes. We couldn’t be more thankful for their support! 15 HALO Chihuahuas found homes in Boise, Idaho There aren’t many small dogs available for adoption in Idaho. That is why HALO chose to partner with the All Valley Animal Care Center in Boise for a Chihuahua transport mission. Thanks to your support, we sent 15 Chihuahuas to find their forever homes in Boise. And this opened up space in our kennels so we could take in 15 more dogs. It was a long drive, but it only took 2 days for all the dogs to be adopted! Rosaria (pictured with her mom) is one of the dogs who found her new home in Boise. Thank you to all our 2015 grant partners who have supported the animals! 6 HALO Animal Rescue A Letter from the President Dear Friend, What a wonderful, action packed year it has been thus far! I’ve taken a little time for reflection in the last few weeks as I often do around HALO’s birthday. Celebrating 21 years of operation for any organization, be it for profit or non-profit, is quite an accomplishment! What started out as a team of two, mother and daughter out of our garages, has turned in to an entire army of staff and hundreds of volunteers and donors, all driving HALO forward to save more lives! The love and support you all have given to HALO by way of your time, attention and dollars has enabled us to grow from saving a handful of homeless pets per year to saving over 7,000! For well over a decade HALO Animal Rescue has focused our efforts almost completely on those pets who are already within the shelter system in Maricopa County at Animal Care and Control’s (MCACC) facility. Because of this laser focus on our community’s pets, a closer partnership with MCACC was formed to put our teams together, combining resources toward the common goals of providing a higher level of care to the pets and people as well as saving more lives. While the road to success is not straight, our partnership continues to be successful as we come to a close on our third year together. With your support, we will continue to push forward to be that safe landing spot for pets who find themselves with nowhere to call home. With your support, together, we will continue Helping Animals Live On. Thank you! Heather Allen President and Co-Founder 7 ADOPTION NUMBERS ARE UP! With adoptions up 9% so far this year, more animals are finding their forever homes. We put your donations to work every day to rescue just one more animal, and we’re happy to report that in the first 6 months of 2015, you helped us save 3,832 animals, 319 more pets than in the first 6 months of 2014. We’ve been running adoption specials every month to help pets get homes, like our March Madness special, our Aye! Chihuahua special, and our 21st birthday celebration. We’ve also been partnering with PetSmart during their National Pet Adoption Weekends to help the pets get more exposure. But there is still a long way to go! Our goal is to adopt out more than 8,800 pets this year. We’ll keep the specials going, but we need you to help us spread the word! We know we can count on you! Let your friends, family, and co-workers know how much you love your adopted pet. Share our specials on social media. Volunteer or donate. There are so many ways to help keep adoption numbers up. Remember, behind every number is a wet nose! Emmie learned a few tricks during the March Madness special and won her way into her adopter’s heart. You can help dogs like her by spreading the word about our adoption specials. DID YOU KNOW? HALO’s average cost per animal is over $300 and our average adoption fee is just $125. Adoption fees help, but they don’t come close to making up the cost of care for each animal. This is why your donations are so important! Thank you!
