FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ May 7th, 2017 MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ABOUT OUR PARISH The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square. SAINT PATRICK 404 E. Main St. The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. HOLY REDEEMER 120 W. Johnson St. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). In the meantime, an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there. CATHEDRAL PLACE W. This day is chosen for the observance because, on this Sunday, we hear a Gospel in which the Lord refers to Himself as the Good Shepherd. Today, the Church all over the world publicly fulfills the Lord’s instruction that we “pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest.” (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2) It is particularly appropriate that Deacon Grant Thies is with us for the first three English Masses this weekend. He was ordained to the diaconate last month, and exercises his new ministry here in the Diocese of Madison for the first time this weekend. Deacon Thies is one of three men anticipated to be ordained priests for our diocese in June 2018. Received into full communion with the Catholic Church here in 2009, Grant was a very active member of our parish until entering the seminary in 2012. As we pray for vocations this weekend, we cannot forget to add our thanksgiving for the Lord’s generosity to our diocese in recent years. We are very blessed to have three outstanding young men – Deacons Jared Holzhuter, Andrew Showers and Luke Syse – in the priesthood class of 2017. Their priesthood ordination will be at the end of next month. And God has been particularly good to our own parish as well. From the Cathedral Parish, we have two more gentlemen – Steve Brunner and Clint Olson – in the priesthood class of 2019. And one young man is just now completing the application process to enter the college seminary this fall. Let us pray for all our seminarians! New Vocations Website If you’d like to learn more about pursuing a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, check out the new vocations website our diocese has launched: madisonvocations.org. Parish Vocations Liaisons Sought Another new diocesan initiative is to recruit parishioners from throughout the diocese as liaisons with the diocesan vocation office – to help publicize and implement diocesan programs in each parish. If you would be interested in serving in such a role for our parish, please speak to Msgr. Holmes or call the parish office (257-5000). Rosary March This Sunday—May 7th The 81st Semi-annual International Rosary March will be held this Sunday, May 7th, at Holy Redeemer Church, beginning at 2:00 pm. A lunch will be served afterward. All are welcome. Come to help mark the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions in Portugal. Special Collection for Trinity Dome The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (in Washington, DC) is nearing completion after nearly a century of building and decoration. The bishops of the United States have authorized a special collection on Mother’s Day for the production and installation of the last mosaic — inside the great dome. Informational cards and envelopes for this special collection are available in the pews this weekend. Page 3 Fourth Sunday of Easter May 7, 2017 FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends in Christ: This month, we mark the centenary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima in Portugal. At Bishop Morlino’s invitation, we are praying the Rosary together prior to the Sunday Masses this month. And, in several bulletin letters, I am writing about those events that took place one hundred years ago. The visionaries of Fatima were three young children: Lucia Santos (b. 1907) and her cousins, Francisco (b. 1908) and Jacinta (b. 1910) Marto. In last week’s bulletin, I described three encounters these children had with an angel in 1916, as preparation for Mary’s visits. MASS SCHEDULE Monday, May 8 – Easter Weekday 12:10 pm at St. Patrick Special Intention: Frank Mooney 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer † William Paltz Tuesday, May 9 – Easter Weekend 12:10 pm at St. Patrick † Gerald Klein 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer † Mary Van Beek Wednesday, May 10 – St. Damien de Veuster Sister Lucia (the only one of the visionaries to live into adulthood) later reported that the visits of the Angel left the children awestruck. For some time after each visit, they were unable to speak even to each other. Without discussing it, none of the children had any inclination to mention these encounters to anyone else. But they did very frequently and ardently pray and sacrifice as instructed by the Angel. The day of the first apparition of Mary was almost eight months later, on May 13, 1917. The children took the sheep, which they tended, out of their little hamlet of Aljustrel, past the village of Fatima (where their parish church was located), to pasture at the Cova de Iria. Around noon, they decided to say a quick Rosary (using only the first words of each prayer). They were interrupted by flashes of lightning in a clear sky. Beginning to take their sheep to lower ground for cover, they met “a lady dressed in white, shining brighter than the sun, giving out rays of clear and intense light, just like a crystal goblet full of pure water when the fiery sun passes through it.” The Lady told the children she came from heaven. She answered several questions that they asked her about whether they and their friends would go to heaven. Then she asked three things of them: to bear their sufferings in reparation for sins and for the conversion of sinners, to say the Rosary each day to bring an end of the war (World War I) and peace, and to return to the same place to meet her again on the 13th of each of the next five months. Unlike the visits of the Angel, this encounter with the Lady left the children more in joy than in awe. The youngest of them – Jacinta, then just 7 – spoke about the encounter to her family. The response of the families of the children and others who heard the story was mixed. Pope Francis plans to be in Fatima next Saturday – May 13th, the 100th anniversary of the first apparition – to canonize Jacinta and Francisco, both of whom died in childhood. They will be the youngest canonized saints who were not martyred in the history of the Church. Msgr.
