Susan B. Kiehl
Insight on Leadership Today… By Otis R. Jackson III | March 13, 2014
LMLA is committed to bringing to its membership insight and tips
on personal leadership and management. It is in that spirit that
we interview our very own leadership and top executives here at
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics to bring value to this commitment.
In this issue of the e-courier, we interview
Susan B. Kiehl, Vice President of Product
Development for the Integrated Fighter
Group. With twenty-nine years tenure, Ms.
Kiehl draws from her own personal
experiences to offer invaluable insight into
what it takes to be an effective leader today.
Hard work and timeliness are well known
leadership traits. One of the ‘unknown’ and
not ‘highly visible’ leadership attributes that
Ms. Kiehl has the opportunity to witness and
demonstrate herself is ‘decision
making’. This is extremely important to an
organizations’ success at any level. As
problems become more complex, an
understanding of the risks involved in each
problem is instrumental to decision making.
The lack of this sometimes overlooked
leadership attribute can impact organization
effectiveness , and potentially bring any
progress grinding to a stop.
Success and failure hinge on strong
leadership competencies and ethics in the
technical, behavioral and relational arenas.
1
As such, future leaders must recognize and
heed that ethics matter. Ms. Kiehl is a strong
proponent of ethics, and offers her insight to
achieve highly ethical standards by:

Meeting your commitments (quality)

Understanding behavior counts (how
you treat others)
Work life balance plays an important role
when it comes to leadership. Ms. Kiehl offers
that we as leaders must decide what our
personal boundaries are and what gives us
balance. She states “People will respect your
boundaries when you perform”. In her own
personal time Ms. Kiehl enjoys exercising
which she achieves by running, swimming
and hot yoga. The most recent LMLA event
she attended was the Halloween event held
at the AVC, and Corporate Night is one of her
favorite LMLA events, at which she sponsors
a table .

Foundations of Management — NMA’s Newest Program
This exciting new NMA program is the result of a comprehensive Job Task Analysis study
(commissioned by ICPM, The Institute of Certified Professional Managers at James Madison
University). It identified the knowledge, skills and abilities that new supervisors and
experienced managers need to succeed in today's workplace.
The Foundations of Management (FoM) program comprises 28 hours of learning and
includes 3 custom-published study manuals (in print or eBook format). Recommended
“classroom time” is 2 hours for each of the 14 chapters comprising the entire program.
A Leader Guide with instructional materials, quizzes, and PPT presentations is available
to facilitators for leading group discussion sessions .
NMA/LMLA Speech Contest
Participants who successfully complete
all three courses (per their course
facilitator) will receive an NMA
certificate of completion to document
their achievement.
On Saturday, February 22nd, 18 students from area high
schools all across the DFW metroplex gathered together
for one single purpose, a single purpose to amaze and
inspire people with words on leadership.
This year’s annual NMA/LMLA Chapter Speech
Competition took place the morning of February 22nd at
the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics facility in Fort Worth in
its AVC Display Area and Theater. As the event
commenced, students of all different high school ages,
backgrounds, and types of schooling came forward, one by
one, to give their speeches on what they felt leadership is
to friends, family, teachers, and a panel of Lockheed
judges. Speeches ranged in content from traditional
definitions of leadership to some as abstract as viewing a
good leader as a pencil.
3 courses, 14 chapters total
Course 1—Management Fundamentals
Course 2—Managerial Functions
Course 3— Business Concepts for Managers
For more information about FoM classes and enrollment please contact Diana
Kirkwood ([email protected]).

Though all the speeches were well written and thought
out, only three speeches were chosen for first, second,
and third place that day. Third place went to Mamie
Gilliam, a senior from Tolar High School, who gave a
speech showing that a great leader could be like the
traditional forthright leader Captain Miller from the film
Saving Private Ryan or like Nelson Mandela’s shepherd
leader who inspires from behind his followers. Second
place went to Hiral Desai, a senior from Lewisville High
School, who spoke about a good leader being like a pencil,
sharp and able to leave a mark. Finally, our first place
winner was Alex Caldwell, a junior from Mabank High
School with her speech entitled The Ruby Slipper, a speech
that demonstrated and compared the various types of
leadership through three different archetypes from the
widely known film The Wizard of Oz. Alex will go on to
represent this chapter at the County Speech Competition
at University of Texas at Arlington on March 22nd.
