We exist to make sure it doesn’t
In 2006 the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Upstate New York Chapter
experienced geographic expansion while continuing to develop and implement
world-class programs and innovative fundraising events. During the past year,
the Chapter developed partnerships with over 200 community focused corporate
sponsors, dozens of enthusiastic committee members, team captains, and hundreds
of volunteers who facilitated a myriad of fundraising events. In addition, dedicated
volunteers supported the Chapter in the delivery of programs, managing self-help
groups, and advocating on political action committees. During this time, the
development team achieved an all time Chapter high as the MS Walk reached
its goal of 1.2 million dollars while the program team again received the Society’s
highest recognition for program excellence, the Cavallo Award.
Throughout the second half of 2006, we completed the unification of the Western
New York Chapter with the Upstate New York Chapter. The decision to combine
our Chapters allowed us to consolidate administrative and leadership functions
while creating the opportunity to leverage more local resources and expand
programs and services for clients living in the current Western New York territory.
The Upstate New York Chapter now serves over 12,000 clients and their families
across 50 counties in Upstate New York with offices in Albany, Binghamton,
Buffalo, Plattsburgh, Poughkeepsie, Rochester and Syracuse.
Today, the Upstate New York Chapter is truly positioned to attract and mobilize
the talents of thousands of people who are touched by MS, to create a powerful
movement, and to bring an end to this unpredictable and devastating disease.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) isn't fully understood, but many believe it is an autoimmune disease
that affects the central nervous system, or CNS. The CNS includes the brain, the spinal cord,
and the optic nerves, and is surrounded by a fatty tissue called myelin that protects the
nerve fibers and helps them conduct electrical impulses.
What does MS do?
When a person has MS, he or she loses myelin in more than one, or multiple, areas. The
resulting scar tissue is called sclerosis. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.
When myelin is destroyed or damaged, the nerves cannot conduct electrical impulses to and
from the brain. This breakdown is what produces the symptoms of MS.
Symptoms of MS
The symptoms of MS are unpredictable and various. Here are a few of the more common ones.
Fatigue
■ Difficulty in walking
■ Vision problems
■ Problems with memory, attention,
and problem-solving
■
Bladder/bowel dysfunction
■ Dizziness and vertigo
■ Emotional changes
■ Numbness/pain
■ Sexual dysfunction
■
Varied Types of MS
Just as symptoms are different among individuals, so are the types of multiple sclerosis.
Each of these types can be mild, moderate, or severe.
There are four recognized types of multiple sclerosis, ranging from those that cause
periodic relapses or attacks of symptoms that subsequently 'remit' or go away to types
that progressively affect those living with it in very different ways.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports more MS research, offers
more services for people with MS, provides more professional education
programs and furthers more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS
organization in the world.
A percentage of funds collected is dedicated to support MS research
worldwide and specifically to research conducted in Albany, Buffalo,
Potsdam, Rochester and Syracuse, New York.
