COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE GOMPERS MIDDLE SCHOOL, LOS ANGELES ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (the Partnership) was founded in 2007 as the cornerstone of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s strategy to improve education in Los Angeles. An independent, nonprofit organization, the Partnership contracts with LAUSD to transform and turn around historically under‐performing schools in LAUSD. The Partnership currently manages 16 schools in three communities – Boyle Heights (East LA), Central LA (south of downtown), and Watts – and serves approximately 16,000 students. GOMPERS MIDDLE SCHOOL Situated in urban South Los Angeles near the 110 and 105 freeways, Gompers Middle School has approximately 872 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The school, named after labor union leader Samuel Gompers, joined the Partnership in 2008. In 2009, the school’s Parent Center was fully renovated and remodeled. The school has hired new teachers, invested in instructional technology and teacher professional development, beautified the campus, and provided additional support for students. COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE POSITION The Community Representative will serve as a resource to parents, students and school staff. One (1) part‐time position is available for 2014‐2015. Community Representative will work three (3) hours a day, subject to change. RESPONSIBILITIES Create a positive and welcoming environment for all Gompers’ families at the Parent Center. Provide regular opportunities for family engagement by informing families about workshops, school events, and volunteer opportunities. Maintain records of parent participation at the school and help increase family and community engagement. Support with outreach to families and community organizations. Seek and secure opportunities for collaborating with community partners. Recruit, train, and manage the school volunteer program. Ensure translation is provided at all school events and meetings. Assist with school committee members or advisers in matters concerning school programs and the community. Participate in meetings and individual discussions with students, parents, community organizations. Participate as a member of the Family Action Team and help recruit/support members of the Family Action Team. Participate in Professional Development hosted by the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and LAUSD, as necessary. Ensure culturally relevant information and activities for all parents. Assist with the school’s communication to the Gompers community including writing, speaking, and creating flyers. Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency Have a valid California Driver’s license and the ability to travel to different sites and locations Experience working or participating with parent groups or agencies Sensitive to the desires and the needs of the Gompers Middle School community Interest in the total educational process including curriculum, student health and safety, and school policies Facility in oral and written communication Ability to write clear and concise reports Appropriate manner including poise, tact, good judgment, and ability to work effectively with school personnel, parents and students DESIRABLE SKILLS Bilingual Spanish preferred COMPENSATION Part‐time shift (flexible hours) Hourly rate HOW TO APPLY Please submit a resume and cover letter to [email protected].
