Letter from the President
Greetings! I am thankful for this opportunity to address our members for the first time as President of CAAHP. However, I’m also feeling a little nervous much like our students must feel as
they begin their personal statements! First and foremost, I continue to appreciate your trust in
and support of me as I work to fulfill the duties of this office. I am forever grateful for our past
presidents who continue to be active in CAAHP and have been such wonderful role models. Our
organization is vibrant and strong not because of any one individual but rather due to our collective group of members willing and ready to serve. This collective strength was especially evident to me the past two years as CAAHP Vice-President as we worked towards our 2013 regional conference. I appreciate how many of you said “yes” when asked to help – and how many of
you said “yes” before I could even ask the question. Truly one of the joys of working with advisors is the positive energy and willingness to jump right in. For that, I wholeheartedly thank you.

Looking back a few months, it was an absolute pleasure to see so many of you in Detroit this
past April for our regional conference. Despite torrential weather pounding much of the Midwest, CAAHP welcomed a record turnout of both advisors and professional schools/associations
to the Westin Book Cadillac in downtown Detroit. Dr. Roderick Claybrooks, a local orthopedic
surgeon, Detroit native, and Wayne State University School of Medicine graduate, kicked off our
meeting with a powerful keynote address. As the conference unfolded, members were treated to
a plethora of workshops and presentations centered on our conference theme: Making Differences: Health Professions Advising in a Diverse, and Changing World. Our 2013 gathering was
a fabulous example of teamwork and collaboration – thank YOU to all who contributed to its
success.
We are already looking ahead to 2015 and will have more information to share ASAP as to dates
and location. However, it is never too early to jump in and offer to help during the initial planning stages. It is with a smile and much joy that I turn the conference planning for 2015 over to
Tammy Welchert, newly elected CAAHP Vice President. Please reach out to Tammy if you
would like to volunteer for 2015. Involvement with CAAHP has been an immense blessing in
my life – I’ve witnessed first-hand how we start out as colleagues and those relationships blossom into friendships and a great network of colleagues willing to mentor and support. I encourage each and every one of you to think about how you can take the next step to serve your organization and then act on that step. I look forward to connecting
with as many of you as possible as I move through this two
year tenure as President. While I most certainly will not have
all the answers, my door (email) is open to all of you and I
look forward to strengthening our ties and keeping CAAHP
vibrant and strong.
Sincerely,
TAMMY WELCHERT

Father Joseph L. Walter Award
Our CAAHP meeting in Detroit was a special time for camaraderie and fellowship. It was made even more special by the celebration of the contributions of one of our former colleagues to our profession. Judith Schwinghamer
was honored at our General Business Meeting as the 2013 recipient of the
Father Joseph L. Walter Award.
Judy retired in July 2008 from Michigan State University after serving 32
years as a pre-health advisor. She brought an abundant enthusiasm for service and a generous spirit of sharing to both her pre-health students at MSU
and her colleagues in CAAHP and NAAHP. Her talent for making connections and creating partnerships was a hallmark quality that defined her career
as a mentor, guide, and advisor. It must be noted that Judy is one of those
responsible for launching our primary mode of communication, the HLTHPROF listserv. She was never shy about sharing her wisdom, resources,
handouts, and her wonderful sense of humor with her colleagues. She was
never shy, period! Over the years, she mentored younger advisors; served
tirelessly as a faculty advisor for AED; developed health professions seminars and mentoring programs for students, sharing best practices with her
colleagues; and Judy continues to support CAAHP and NAAHP by sharing
her knowledge of the history of our organizations with Hugo Lane, the
NAAHP Historian.
Letters of support offered these reflections on Judy’s impact on her students
and the broader health professions advising community:
“Her commitment to her students was impeccable. She encouraged all of us to strive
toward potential and reach for the stars… I will always be thankful for Judy’s sense
of caring, compassion, love and dedication to her job as a health care (advising) professional.” – Rita Majeda Hindo, DO
“I can think of no one more deserving of this award. Judy dedicated her entire career
to helping students and is a legend at Michigan State University. Through her efforts,
countless numbers of students realized success in healthcare fields.” Christopher
Guyer, MD
“Judy had an incredible heart and passion for the work that she did; she paved the
way and provided many new opportunities that continue to benefit students and advisors today.”
Judy was a good friend to Fr. Joe Walter, and we
know he would be delighted to see Judy receive this
award named for him. It is truly a delight and an honor to see Judith Schwinghamer recognized for her
significant contributions as the 2013 recipient of the
Father Joseph Walter Award.

CAAHP Membership Update
Membership Has Its Privileges!
Last year I put the word out to all of you through our newsletter and separate email communication that the National office was moving toward a common renewal deadline and many of you positively responded to the
countless emails and reminders from the National office and myself to go to the website to join – I am excited to
report that our membership continues to grow because so many of you realize the TRUE benefits of being a
member of NAAHP and CAAHP! Our regional membership is up over 14% from a year ago! Why is it is important to be a member and continue to grow our organization?
Simply understood - as a well-known credit card company once told us in their slogan – “Membership Has Its
Privileges” and that holds true to the many benefits of our professional organization! I hope you have taken time
in your busy work lives to notice the new look of the National newsletter and website and the rework of the
Member Only resources, including the new electronic PARM that so many of us enjoy! Access to these resources through the Advisor Only section of the website is available to YOU because you find membership valuable in our organization! We connect at conferences, participate in workshops and webinars – all because we
care about the role we serve at our colleges and universities as we guide our students who desire careers in the
health professions!
What can you do as a member of NAAHP and CAAHP? Pass it on! Tell your colleagues who are not members
how much YOU have gained from membership! Give them a tour of the resources you enjoy because of your
National membership! Invite them to the NAAHP National Conference taking place in San Francisco
in 2014 so all of us can continue to learn from each other and our professional association and school
contacts through concurrent and plenary sessions designed to develop and educate Advisors of the
Health Professions.
A common renewal deadline for NAAHP membership has been
established annually on November 1st.
So, RENEW by November 1st – the common renewal deadline and pay heed to those reminders you
receive from the National office! And tell others of the great benefits you find in our organization and
encourage them to join!
I look forward to seeing many of you next summer in San Fran and wish you the best as you continue
into your fall semesters!

Biosciences Conference for students planning graduate work in the Biosciences.
Students will learn about the qualities sought in medical school
applicants, witness a cyber anatomy demonstration and learn about financing a medical education. Sessions on diversity in medicine, tips
for navigating the admissions process and a medical student panel are
also scheduled.
This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Katie Imborek, an assistant

Greetings Michigan Advisors of the Health Professions (MIHAP) colleagues,
Date:
Friday, September 27, 2013
Time:
All day (9 am - 4 pm)
Location: Grand Rapids Medical Mile, Grand Rapids, MI
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine & Grand Valley State University’s College of Health Professions
We’re excited about showcasing graduate health professions opportunities in west
Michigan. We’ll start out at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. Unlike the traditional sedentary conference, we’ll have an opportunity to “walk
the journey” of health professions as we progress along part of medical mile to Grand
Valley State University’s College of Health Professions (GVSU CHP). Don’t worry
we have alternate plans for inclement weather (umbrellas!) and for those who need
assistance.
At GVSU CHP, we’ll hear from Ferris State University's College of Pharmacy in addition to our state’s newest medical school – Western Michigan University School of
Medicine. We’ll spend the rest of the day learning about GVSU CHP graduate programs, including Medical Dosimetry, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Public Health, & Speech Language Pathology.

1). If you have students going abroad to get “health
care experience” so they can become more competitive for a health profession program – then you need
to consider using Global Ambassadors for Patient
Safety (GAPS) – an online education tool to help
students understand their risks when providing
healthcare without a license. This October, the University of Minnesota will be launching international distribution of
GAPS. This tool will be open-access and free of charge for all users.
To support advisors and others who work with pre-health students, the Health
Careers Center is creating a toolkit – full of information to support advisors,
program directors, and others at Universities as well as in learning abroad
programs. Details about this module can be found at http://
www.healthcareers.umn.edu/online-workshops/gaps/index.htm
The launch of this free module will occur in October, 2013. If you have questions please send an email to [email protected]
2). The Health Careers Center has been working on MCAT mapping with our
college partners. We are taking advantage of the support tools designed by the
AMCAS to map our courses to help students find courses to help them prepare for the MCAT 2015. This process has created a great dialogue with faculty leaders on our campus.
3). From September 30-October 9, 2013, the Health Careers Center will be
hosting a “Health Careers Week”. This is a new event on our campus which
will conclude with a health careers fair which hosts about 700 people exploring career options. A movie night will be part of the festivities with a showing
of the acclaimed documentary, “The W aiting Room”.

NAAHP Update
NAAHP’s board of directors met in June at the hotel site of the 2014 national conference in San Francisco. The work identified in last year’s strategic planning is
progressing well. Membership is growing, Governance is working on an organizational handbook, Communication is making great strides on the web site improvements, Advisor, and the NAAP-sack, and the Professional Development
group will be unveiling their work at the 2014 national meeting.

CAAHP Update
The CAAHP Board of Directors last met in April 2013 at the site of our regional meeting
in Detroit. Suzette Combs guided the Board through her last meeting as President. The
Board members noted that CAAHP is in a wonderful place because of her incredible leadership. Thanks to Suzette for her years of service!!
2013 has been a great year for CAAHP, with a very successful meeting in Detroit, increasing numbers of members and enhanced membership recruitment, financial stability, a
successful mentorship program, increased assistance available to members through the
awarding of travel grants for meetings, and an inspiring choice for the 2013 Fr. Walter
Award, Judy Schwinghamer.
The Board began discussions about the timing and site (hopefully, Kansas City!) for our
next regional meeting in April 2015. Heidi Lang, Tammy Welchert, Marikay Dobbins and
Erin Sayer met in Kansas City this month to visit four properties. Further discussions
about the 2015 meeting as well as travel grants for the 2014 nation meeting will take place
during the Board’s conference call this October and at the Board’s annual meeting in February 2014, this year to be held in Chicago.
