Japan is a chain of four main islands off the coast of Korea. The
name of the four main islands are Hokkaido, which the most
Northern main island, then Honshu and Shikoku are in the
middle, and Kyushu is the most southern. "The four main lands
have more than 3000 smaller islands" (pg.108, Global History
and Geography). These smaller islands are good for protection
and help isolate Japan, and they were known as the "ring of
fire". Japan has very little farmland. They lack farmland
because its very mountinous. Due to the little farmland the
Japenese people setteled near river valleys and they became
very skilled fishermen. They used their seas for trade routes
and for protection. Japans climate is very mild and has frequent
rainfalls. Japan also has frequent earthquakes, volcanoes, and
sometimes they have tsunamis. The Japanese people have a
great respect for the nature.
