¡Hola! Welcome to Spanish class! The last week of October till November 1 and 2 we learned about the Day of the Dead in all grades. The Mexican “Día de los Muertos” is not the same as Halloween and it is not a scary celebration. Ask your child what he/she learned about it! Kindergarten: We love otoño, its colors and all the things we can do. We are now learning about animals, what they say, where they live and very soon we will see what kinds of pets we have or we really, really want… We’ll keep you posted! 1st grade: The students are talking about their pets, real and imaginary… Gatos, perros, peces, serpientes, dinosaurios… In talking about topics that interest them the students acquire grammar effortlessly: using structures like “hay” (there is/there are), “me gusta” (I like), “come” (eats), “vive” (lives) hey are able to communicate in age appropriate situations they would encounter in a Spanish speaking country. 2nd grade: We read and acted out an imaginary story about my dog, Luke, going around Beye school, asking for a soccer ball to play with… We had even more fun when we introduced variations to the story… We are now learning about a bigger place: the community of Oak Park. This is in preparation of a situation they would encounter if they traveled to a Spanish speaking country: the vocabulary and they ability to find where we are in that space. 3rd grade: The students also reviewed the places we find around Oak Park and compared them to my hometown in Spain, Mérida. In doing that they learned about how children live there, the school day, how they play and what activities they do in different weather. Very soon they will be taking a big leap to a bigger community: the Solar System. 4th grade: The students compared and contrasted Oak Park with my hometown in Spain, their buildings, spaces, way of life, schools, etc. Soon they will be focusing on just one Spanish speaking country of their choice and travelling there. We’ll keep you posted! 5th grade: 5th graders are preparing to be experts on the capital of one country they have chose to travel to as continuation of our travel unit. They are working on a presentation on their iPads that is due very soon... Dear Parents of 4th and 5th grade students, The Junior Great Books program is back at Beye! Junior Great Books is an extracurricular reading program for students in grades 4 and 5. Discussion groups will begin Friday, January 13th during lunch recess (11:25-11:55). What is Junior Great Books? Junior Great Books is an opportunity for small groups of students to read and discuss age appropriate literature with an adult facilitator. The program uses a “shared inquiry” approach to learning which encourages students to search for meaning in stories and to consider and express many different points of view. The discussions help students increase their comprehension, interpretive thinking, and oral and written language skills. Who can participate? The program is open to any student in grades 4 through 5 who wants to join. Students will use an anthology of grade appropriate stories, usually folk tales, which have been selected by the Great Books Foundation for their ability to be interpreted in many different ways leading to interesting and informative discussions. Students are responsible for reading the weekly selection at home on their own or with their parents before each session. Who leads the groups? Parent volunteers will help lead the discussion groups. Please see the bottom of this form to indicate if you would like to volunteer. When do discussions happen? Junior Great Books will start Friday January 13th, 2017. Discussions will take place during 4th and 5th grade lunch recess (11:25-11:55) once a week for a period of 9 weeks or more depending on student interest and volunteer availability.
