Reading Log Expectations
We will be reading Things Fall Apart and other related texts during our month long study of African
culture. During this time, you must keep a reading log that shows your engagement with the text. This
will be due March 29th.





Each entry should begin with the date, the section/chapter of the book or the title of the
poem/text clearly written.
There should be at least 22 entries.
Handwritten, each entry should be a minimum of ½ page long. More credit will be given for
longer entries.
NO SUMMARY! Each entry should address one or more of the following questions. Different
chapters and texts will lend themselves to different interactions with them, so please choose
the questions that will benefit you the most.
Try to always get to that deeper, philosophical level. Why? What does this say about
humanity?
1. Compare and contrast two characters. Include at least three important similarities and three
important differences.
2. Why do you think the author wrote this selection?
Why are these characters behaving this way?
What does this selection mean to the story as a whole?
Describe similarities between this section and knowledge you already have.
How do you feel about what is happening? Why?
What is the problem/issue in this selection? What is the solution?
Describe what character you would like to be in this selection. What would you look like? How
would you behave? Why?
9. Write some revealing quotes from this selection/chapter. Explain them and show how they fit
into the story as a whole.
10. What are the big ideas/themes that you understand from this selection? Remember that theme
answers the question “In this selection, it says that people tend to ____________________”
