The RAAM (Race Across America) is the worlds toughest bicycle race traveling 3,000 miles non-stop over all kinds of terrain, through all kinds of weather. It is definitely not for wimps. We trained hard and spent a lot of time fund raising. Through the generosity of friends, family, the community, and our own Fresno Cycling Club we managed to raise a significant amount of money. Although we didn't reach our fund raising goal, I think we met our goal of spreading the word regarding Organ Donation and Transplantation. It is an experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and one I won't soon forget. Be sure to check the Club ride calendar for a packed ride schedule. Teamwork! In this case the task was for eight cyclists to race their bikes across the US as quickly as possible. But in order for that to occur, work most definitely had to be done and the team that did it was the Crystel’s Gift Crew! Before we set off from Oceanside one of the RAAM officials warned us about “The RAAM Monster”, we knew the crew was going to have a lot to do and a lot to put up with in terms of sleep deprivation P AGE 3 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 7 B EAST OF R AMM CONT and cranky racers barking orders etc. But what happened out on the road was simply extraordinary. We thought we knew what he was talk- freeway to come back and confront us. He thought twice about out when he saw Jon T and The Manimal jump out of the van ready to rumble! We had issues with the radios and couldn’t communicate between vehicles and riders. We had wind and dust storms the likes we had only seen on TV. ing about but let me assure you we did not have a clue! Each day of the race brought something different in terms of things the crew had to deal with. On the first day we had a penalty that kept us from truly focusing on the task at hand as we debated how we could have avoided it. On another day we had a motorist swerve at the transition crew and then flip a U-turn in the middle of the beast to grow, no one person could give it life, it took two or more to let it breath and it took two or more to nurture into a thriving creature that could ultimately destroy all that we had accomplished. The beast feeds on the little things like words said in anger or sarcastic comments said in jest. But what we found in our group of We had cold nights and hot days but all of that we expected, we’d prepared for those things and they seemed insignificant when faced with the true monster that is RAAM. What we learned, as we made our way across the country, was that the true nature of the beast was a team effort. crew members was the wonderful ability to let things go when they needed too. What? Teamwork was the beast we’d been warned about? Yes indeed! You see, it took effort from each person on the team to allow the There were many comments made in anger and many things said that simply could have been left unsaid, and on every occasion our crew found a way to suck it up, let it go, and continue on with the task of getting 18 people safely across the country. In the end, eight cyclist stood on a stage in the middle of the night before a small crowd of around 30 people to receive a medal of achievement for accomplishing something that they could never have accomplished without those intrepid crew members who’s selfless sacrifices over 7 days allowed our dreams to come true. Thank you to the crew of Crystel’s Gift you are the true heroes and we salute you! P AGE 4 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 7 R IDE R EPORT — H UME L AKE LOOP This is a recap of the "C" ride at Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks that followed the Hume Lake loop with a leg to Stony Creek Village. We had a nice turnout for the ride, with a total of 12 cyclists, including ride leaders Tom and Henry. As we were meeting at the Grant Grove Visitor Center, someone mentioned that they had seen a rider coming up the 180 as they entered the park. Soon the "mystery" rider arrived at the VC, and it was none other than FCC ride coordinator Eric Zentner. He had started down in Dunlap and rode up to join us on our ride. It was fun having a "special guest star" along with us! The weather was cool, but not as cool as we had expected, as we rode out 180 and over Cherry Gap to begin the descent to Hume. After the turnoff we stopped to take in the great views of Kings Canyon. Following the regroup at Hume Lake we began then climb up Ten Mile Rd. The riders chugged up the long grind while taking in the great views and enjoying the few wildflowers that were left blooming. Another regroup at Quail Flat then it was another shorter climb before dropping down to Stony Creek Village. There we took a group photo that at first included a couple of "posers" (tourists) who snuck into the shot. We tried to collect club dues from them, but they bailed out post haste. The group then started back out Generals Highway up the grade for the 5 mile climb to the summit. It was at this time that Eric strapped on his rocket pack and quickly disappeared up the climb and on to his starting point (some 20 miles farther down the hill than ours). We regrouped one last time at the top, where we spied a marmot waddling across the road, and then enjoyed the nice 8 mile relative descent to the finish. Final stats were 41 miles with 4800' of climbing (extra credit for the altitude!) and a lot of fun. The spirit of this group was fantastic and we enjoyed a nice camaraderie throughout this lovely day. Thanks to Nanci, Scott, Michelle, Melissa, Sue, Susan, Randy, Connor, Robin, Eric, and Tom for making it a fun ride. P AGE 5 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 7 J ERRY ’ S B IG C REEK B IRTHDAY B ASH If your birthday is in June, is there a better way to celebrate your special day than a training ride for the Climb to Kaiser? Jerry Ferdolage and his crew of rabid and slightly demented partygoers couldn’t think of a better way to mark Jerry’s birthday than a little climb up Big Creek with a loop around Huntington Lake. Jerry included Susan Smith, Mike Murphy, Nancy Ellis, Kim Costa, Nanci Sumaya and Steve Lewis on his invitation list, and we all convened at the Shaver Lake C2K rest stop early Sunday morning. Jerry also recruited his wife and daughter, Katherine and Melissa Ferdolage, to provide SAG support for the partyers who might have too much fun. At first we debated about leg warmers, jackets, and long-finger gloves, but we eventually got underway through sleepy, early-morning Shaver Lake. The descent down into Big Creek was steep and treacherous, with morning shadows dappling the road, making it tough to anticipate the ruts, bumps and sand. Everyone made it down the hill without incident, and the celebrants regrouped at the village of Big Creek in the warm morning sunshine. Katherine and Melissa opened the tailgate of their car and offered wonderful salty chips and ice-cold water to top off the go juice bottles before the Big Creek climb. The young cyclists took off up the hill hard and fast, while the older contingent set off at a more sedate and perhaps more sustainable pace. The wonderful thing about climbing Big Creek is that even though the road starts out steep, it just stays steep! Old Tollhouse has a few sections where the road flattens out a bit for a while, but Big Creek offers no relief from its 12% gradient. I think Big Creek is why Shimano sells cogs the diameter of family-size pizzas. The party slowly strung out along about ¼ mile of the hill, with a mixture of old and young riders in the front, and a few old and young riders bringing up the rear. As always, when the Huntington Lake dam came into view, followed by the cool, blue lake itself, we had another reason to party! We toasted Jerry with refreshing mixed drinks, mostly Heed and Cytomax, and headed out to the east end of Huntington Lake. It fell to the C2K finishers in the peloton to reassure the C2K rookies that, after Big Creek, it was “all downhill from there, except for the remaining climbs….” The remaining climbs quickly began, with the party peloton stretching out along the climbs up the Three Sisters. The party mood got stronger and stronger each time we passed a landmark that showed that the Tamarack Summit was getting closer. Some of us had to remind ourselves of the old cyclist axiom that “if you keep going, the climb will eventually end”. Katherine and Melissa were waiting for the riders at Tamarack Summit with cool beverages and more salty snacks, and after a brief stop the peloton launched down the LONG DESCENT back into Shaver Lake. The traffic was light, the road was in great condition, the speeds were exhilarating, and soon the party reconvened in Shaver Lake. As we put our bikes away, the typical exaggerations, over-exaggerations, and tall tales were exchanged. Then we met up in downtown Shaver Lake for burgers, fries, birthday cupcakes (thank you, Katherine!) and Happy Birthday wishes to Jerry. After the appropriate amounts of restorative protein, carbohydrate, and post-ride recovery beverages had been consumed, and the blood sugar of the riders had reached normal levels again, we all decided that Jerry’s Big Creek Birthday Bash was a tremendous success, and we threw our bike helmets into the ring for Jerry’s 2013 Big Creek Birthday Bash, Part II. In the meantime, the party peloton will continue to train for the 155mile party on June 30! Thanks again to Katherine and Melissa for providing SAG support for the riders. We appreciate your efforts P AGE 6 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 7 J UNE 2012 T IME T RIAL RESULTS The June Belmont Time Trial took place on the 14th. With 24 riders, we had a pretty respectable turnout considering the temperature was in the high 90s and the ever present northwest wind was kicking up beyond just a mere breeze. But despite the conditions, we still had some pretty fast times. Our junior speedster, Jack Maddux, did not disappoint us turning in an incredibly fast average speed of 28.28 mph. But just 12 seconds behind Jack was Jonathon Eropkin averaging 28.02 mph. Breaking the 28 mph mark is some pretty darn fast riding! Please take a look at the results summary and see the other really fast times that were posted. The support Peppino and the Blossom Trail Café continue to provide our club is amazing. They are more than happy to let us take over their parking lot once a month to hold our time trial series.
