100 YEARS OF LIFE SAVERS
®
Life Savers come in many flavors.
For 100 years, people have been sharing Life Savers. Chocolate
maker Clarence Crane invented Life Savers candy in 1912. He knew
people did not buy as much chocolate in the summer. The warm
temperatures made chocolate melt. Clarence decided to make “summer
candy” that did not melt. The hard candy was shaped like a life preserver.
A life preserver is a ring that floats in the water. It can save a drowning
person’s life. So Clarence named the candies “Life Savers.” The first Life
Savers were peppermint flavored.

Everyone loves to share Life Savers®.
By 1919, other flavors were added. These flavors included
licorice, chocolate, cinnamon and even violet! The candy rings were
put together in a roll. The roll was wrapped in foil, just as it is today.
Today, machines wrap the rolls. In the beginning, each roll was
wrapped by hand. A roll cost only five cents. The Five-Flavor® roll
was first made in 1935. It was the first roll with more than one flavor.
The roll had pineapple, lime, orange, cherry and lemon Life Savers.
People especially liked sharing this roll. Everyone could choose
their favorite flavor.

Life Savers® candy had
an important job in the
1940s. Millions of Americans
left the U.S. to fight overseas

sent over 23 million boxes
of the candy to U.S. soldiers.
These students are packing care packages for soldiers.
The candy rolls fit in the
soldier’s pockets and would
not melt. Soldiers could
take a break and share a
quick snack with each other.
