Step 5: (Optional)To
smooth the edges, lightly
dampen just the edges
with water & a sponge.
Use an edge slicker, bone
folder or wood spindle
slicker.

Step 1: Make a pattern
the size of tray you
want. Shown here is
7” x 8.5” with rounded
corners. Round the
corners using a circle
template, compass or
small jar cap. Mark
holes for thread on all 4
corners.

Step 2: Outline pattern
onto (dry) leather with
stylus. Mark holes on
all 4 corners with stylus.
Optional: Stamp a design on the smooth side of leather. Plan
the assembly so design is either on inside or outside of tray.
Do not apply color or finish until after tray is formed.
Step 6: To form the tray,
apply a light coat of water
with sponge or spray
bottle. Pinch corners,
aligning holes. Fold on
fold lines. Let dry.
Step 3: Carefully cutout leather piece using a
craft knife.
Step 7: Apply color & or
leather finish. Let dry.
TIPS: Use a straight
edge for long side cuts.
Be sure the knife blade
is sharp. Hold knife
straight.
Step 8: Thread needle
(18” per corner). Begin
inside corner. Stitch out
one hole leaving 6” to tie
off later. Go over top edge
& through aligned holes.
Pull tight. Repeat 4 times
ending inside corner.
Step 4: Punch holes in
corners using a 1/8”
or 2.5 mm punch, poly
cutting board and wood
or poly mallet. Or use a
rotary punch.
- OR -
Step 9: Tie ends in knot,
trim off excess thread.
Repeat Steps 8 & 9 on
other corners.

Step 1: Make a tracing of this pattern using vellum and a pencil or copy the pattern using a copier.
(Vellum works in copier.)
Step 2: Case (dampen) leather with water and sponge.
Step 3: Then lightly transfer inside pattern using the stylus end of a modeling tool.
