purple on October 23rd. Get your class to wear LOTS of purple if you want to win!! Pictures will be
taken and sent to the Carroll Athletic Department for their decision. Students who wear purple on the

Recycling
We have begun recycling aluminum cans and plastic bottles from lunches and snacks at St. Andrew as
a way to reduce the carbon footprint. However, please do not bring any empty cans or bottles from
home as space is limited and this is not a fund raising activity.
Helena Symphony Concert
Opening Night – Violinist Petteri Iivonen
Saturday, September 19, 7:30pm, Helena Civic Center
The Season opens with world renowned Finnish Violinist Petteri Iivonen performing Sibelius’
tempestuous and delicately beautiful Violin concerto. Sibelius’ 150th birthday is also celebrated with his
well-known Finlandia. The concert culminates with the grandeur, tragedy, and reflection of Dvořák’s
Seventh Symphony. Opening Night is not to be missed!
St. Andrew students may pick up a voucher for a free ticket at the school office or from Mrs. Elliott.
MEDICATION POLICY
Please note a change in our medication policy.
2.1.22. Medication, prescription or otherwise, should be given at home whenever possible. If not
possible, the administration of medication to pupils shall be done only in life threatening circumstances
wherein the child’s health may be jeopardized without it. Pupils requiring medication at school shall be
identified by parents and/or a physician to the appropriate school authority. The family physician shall
indicate in writing the necessity of said medication being given during school hours. Parents may make
arrangements to come to school to give the medication to their child.
High School Back to School Trip
Sal et Lux (Salt and Light)
Time to get reacquainted with old friends and get to know your new teachers!
This year’s Salt and Light will be a two night event held in September 23, 24,
and 25 at Legendary Lodge. We are planning games and campfires as well as
opportunities for us to share our faith with Mass and community prayer. Cost for
this trip is $50 per student. Scholarships are available if this is a hardship.
Please speak with Mrs. Smillie.
Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge
Boys and girls ages 10-14 are invited to participate in the 2015 Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge. The
th
event will be held September 24 at 3:15 pm at Saint Andrew School. Participants are required to furnish proof of
age and written parental consent. Entry forms are available in Saint Andrew office or from Mrs. Lachere.
Science Research Seminar on Tuesday 9/15 (3:15 pm, Wiegand Science Lab)
In separate groups depending on grade, participants will play an interactive, role-playing game called
the “fish game,” a non-zero sum game (i.e. everybody wins or everybody loses). After everybody
typically loses the first round by taking too many fish for themselves and not saving fish for others,
students will play the game again, discovering that they must collaborate so everybody wins. This
experiential learning activity helps Mrs. Buffington introduce procedures for the Science Research
Seminar (SRS) and build a collaborative research community. She has facilitated this game with
university faculty, nonprofit organization board members, high school youth groups, and St. Andrew
eighth graders. It’s fun! Join us!
Note that High School students earn 1 credit for participating. Contact Christi Buffington with
questions: [email protected] or 406-437-1533.
Tuesday, 9/22: Students will conduct a hands-on lab titled, “Particulate Matter Matters.”
Tuesday 9/29: SRS Guest Speaker, Dr. Tony Ward, Associate Professor at the University of Montana’s
Center for Environmental Health Sciences (as well as School of Public and Community Health
Sciences and Department of Chemistry). Dr. Ward is currently working with middle and high school
students in Alaska.

Box Tops for Education/Labels for Education
Once again, St. Andrew will be participating in the Labels for Education and Box Tops for Education
programs. These programs are a great alternative to traditional fundraising techniques. Collecting the UPC’s
beverages/sauce caps for Labels for Education allows us to earn free educational items for our school such
as computers, software, sports equipment, musical instruments, library books and even a minivan! Box Tops
sends a check directly to the school for purchase of educational materials of our choice. Collection boxes
will be in each K-12 classroom. Please clip and collect Labels and Box Tops and send them to school with
your child or drop them off in the office.
I will be coordinating the programs this year and will need help trimming and preparing labels and
Box Tops for redemption. I will call you if you signed up for helping in your registration packet. If you did not
sign up and are interested in earning PIP points this way please contact the office or me. More information
about the programs can be found online at labelsforeducation.com and boxtops4education.com.
Thanks you so much for being part of our fundraising family at St. Andrew School!

Deadline for sign-off sheets to be received at St. Andrew by: October 1, 2015
The Missoula Children’s Theatre is coming back to St. Andrew the week of October
5-10, 2015 to help our students perform RAPUNZEL. Approximately 50 St.
Andrew students can participate. Here are some details that might be helpful in
deciding if your student should try out.
•
Who can audition – Any student in grades K-8 who is in academic good standing and has parental
permission.
•
The Story – Rapunzel and all the rest of the characters tell a silly tale of personal triumph and friendship as our story
takes you on a frivolous frolic through the French countryside. Frenchy and his intense friends, the Wood Elves, do their
best to help Rapunzel escape the grasp of Madame Gothel. The lost Prince, Rapunzel’s Parents, and her friends the
Unicorns try to help. Just when you think it’s safe to cross the bridge a Troll and Three Billy Goats Gruff get in the way. It
doesn’t help that the Three Bears (or is it four) confuse Rapunzel with Goldilocks and chase her through the forest. Add to
that the Gremlins trying to play tricks on everyone and you have chaos!
•
Roles available –Typically, lower grades will play minor roles, and both major and minor roles are available for grades 28. Also, 2-4 positions are available for students in grades 6-8 to serve as Assistant Directors who assist during rehearsals
and assume technical roles during the production.
•
Auditions – Any student interested in a role must attend the audition session from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October
5th. This is a group audition - no advance preparation is necessary, but a smile ☺ never hurts. Students should just be
ready to come and have a good time! MCT will attempt to cast as many students as possible, but please note that parts
are not guaranteed for all who audition.
•
Cost – Outside donations and proceeds from the 2014 MCT production (The Wizard of Oz) provides ½ of the cost of bring
the Missoula Children’s Theatre back to St. Andrew School. The rest of the money will come from the $20 student
participation fee and ticket sales. Scholarships are available to cover the fee. Music CDs and t-shirts will be for sale on
performance days.
•
Time Commitment –The amount of rehearsal time depends on the size of the role/age of the student. Students who are
cast in major parts will have an intense rehearsal commitment for the week of at least 4 hours per day. Sports practice
and games will be held this week so check with the coaches to make certain it is okay to miss practice and/or games if
necessary.
•
Rehearsal Schedule – The first rehearsal is on Monday from 3:15 – 5:15 but not all students attend this rehearsal. The
rehearsal schedule for Tuesday – Thursday is tentatively planned for 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 4:15 – 6:15 p.m. We will have
a show on Friday afternoon for the entire school so the dress rehearsal will be on Friday morning. Usually students 7
years old and younger will have their first rehearsal on Wednesday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Students will receive a
light snack after school on Tuesday—Thursday.
•
Performances – St. Andrew School students will offer two performances of RAPUNZEL: Friday, October 9th at 1:30 p.m.
and Saturday, October 10th at 11:00 a.m.
•
Tickets – Prices for tickets are: $5/adult, $3/student K-12, $1/preschool, and $15/family (immediate members only).
Tickets will be available at the door one hour before show time. There is no need to purchase tickets in advance.
Anyone who pays to see the show on Friday can see it for free on Saturday.
•
Permission Slips – Turn in the form (below) to the St. Andrew office with the $20 participation fee per child by
Wednesday, September 30th.
•
Workshops – The Missoula Children’s Theatre Directors will conduct workshops for all of our students. Each workshop
will take place during the school day and is a fun and interactive topic appropriate to the students’ age group and interest.
•
Parent Helpers are needed to provide snacks after school, handout programs, sell tickets, help students get into
costumes and makeup, sell concessions, etc. PLEASE let us know if you can help out in anyway. (Please bring snacks
to the office by Friday, October 2nd)
•
Any questions can be directed to Donna Smillie at 406-449-3201 or Annette Walstad, MCT Parent Coordinator, at 406410-0480.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------My child(ren) have permission to audition for MCT’s RAPUNZEL. I understand that if chosen for the play my student may need to
attend rehearsal from 2:00 to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday. They will also need to be available for the dress rehearsal and
performances on Friday, October 9th and Saturday, October 10th. I understand that students will not be excused from rehearsals or
performances for practices, appointments, etc., but must keep the week completely free for this residency.
