from the president
KCTS 9 is honoring African American History Month with several
significant programs in February, and we’re proud to be a co-producer
of a new film premiering February 10 on Independent Lens. Spies
of Mississippi is about a secret spy agency formed by the state of
Mississippi to preserve segregation in the 1950s and 1960s.
Don't miss director/producer Dawn Porter when she joins us at
a special public screening February 28 at the Northwest African
American Museum.
Ken Burns, who has created so many films that shed light on
important chapters in American history, has a new documentary
premiering this spring. The Address is about a school in Vermont
where the students are encouraged to practice, memorize and
recite the Gettysburg Address. Ken has launched a national effort
to encourage everyone in America to record a video of themselves
reading or reciting the speech, and we’re inviting people to submit
their videos to KCTS 9. (See below.)
Through filmmakers who enrich us with their commitment to
the truth, and students who inspire us with their commitment to
learning, we’re proud to bring you the best television on television.
Thank you for your support.
Rob Dunlop, president & ceo
The Gettysburg Address…Voiced by You!
Few speeches resonate more deeply with Americans than
Lincoln’s famous words in the midst of the Civil War.
KCTS 9 is calling on you to recite the iconic speech on video
and send it to us. Our editing staff will combine video
submissions into one grand version of the speech to be
revealed at an upcoming History Café.
Find video submission instructions at KCTS9.org.

Braised Brussels Sprouts SERVES 6
Executive Chef Dan Ratigan
The Fireside Restaurant, The Resort at Port Ludlow
2 tablespoons water
4 ounces thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon, diced small
1V pounds Brussels sprouts, trimmed,
cut in half, and washed
W
2
1
1
3
cup yellow onion, diced small
cloves garlic, chopped
tablespoon fresh thyme
cup chicken stock or low-sodium broth
tablespoons white wine vinegar
kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper
olive oil
Add 2 tablespoons water to a large skillet and set
over medium-high heat. Add bacon and cook until
fat renders, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove bacon and
add Brussels sprouts, onion, garlic and thyme to the
pan with bacon fat. Cook until slightly caramelized.
Add stock, vinegar and cooked bacon. Simmer until
tender. Season with salt and pepper. Finish with a
drizzle of olive oil.
chef’s note: When preparing Brussels sprouts from
the stalk, snip the end of the sprout, cut in half and
then wash. You do this because as the sprouts grow,
dirt can collect on the inside and so the final layers
may be gritty. This prevents the grit from becoming
a part of your meal.

Three-part series begins 2/11
Approval ratings for Congress are at an all-time
low. Never before has there been so little faith
in the men and women elected to represent us
in the nation’s capital. In this special threepart series, Enrique Cerna and Joni Balter sit
down for no-holds-barred conversations with
the members of Washington’s congressional
delegation.
The Glass Capitol 2/11
Senator Patty Murray, Senator Maria Cantwell
and Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers
are among the most powerful women in
Washington, D.C.
New Kids on the Block 2/18
Representatives Denny Heck, Derek Kilmer and
Suzan DelBene all took office last year amid
turbulence around the Tea Party, Obamacare
and the debt crisis.
House of Cards 2/25
Representatives Dave Reichert, Adam Smith,
Jim McDermott and Rick Larsen have a combined
60 years of experience in Congress.
