Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod Adventure 5K Register your team before December 31st and save $30! But what is an Urban Iditarod? A loose parody of a famous Alaskan dog sled race, we take the format and mix it up. Replace the dogs with people (you and your friends) and the sleds with shopping carts, add in team themes, costumes, contests and a food and fundraising drive and you get the Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod. Hundreds of women, men, teenagers, superheroes, rock bands, Greeks, elephants, tigers, volunteers, and excited philanthropists gather to create this amazingly unique costumed charity shopping cart race of epic proportions — Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod. Here’s what the event consists of: 50 teams of 6 heavily-costumed humanoids, raising Food and Funds for the purpose of changing lives of the homeless and hurting in Huntsville, all while racing tricked-out shopping carts through the frigid streets of downtown Huntsville. There’s no event like this anywhere in the South. If you like road races, adventures and costumes, you’ll love the Heart for the Homeless Urban Iditarod. Sponsorships are still available. It can happen to anyone. I grew up an only child who had everything provided for me by my family. I loved playing sports and it, primarily baseball, was my life’s passion. I thank the Lord that He doesn’t care what you have done. He is always there for you if you seek Him. Since I have been at the Mission, I have learned so much about my faith. The I Anything and everything is possible with God! The Perfect Gift heard a story the other day about a wealthy Christian man’s son who had earned a full scholarship to study business at an Ivy League School. The son worked hard and graduated with honors. For weeks before his graduation the son would hint to his father that he wanted the shiny new BMW in the car dealer’s show room near their home as a graduation gift. Graduation day came and the son was filled with excitement to get home to see if his dad came through with his gift. The father called the son into his study and gave him a beautifully wrapped gift box. He unwrapped the gift to find a new Bible with his name engraved on it. The son was devastated that his father had only gotten him a new Bible and in total disappointment slammed it down on his dad’s desk and said, “This is all I get for all my hard work”. He stormed out and never contacted his father again. Through the years the son did well and built his own thriving business and his bitterness towards his father faded. As he was planning a trip to surprise his dad and mend their relationship he received a call from an estate lawyer telling him that his dad had passed away and left him everything. With great sadness he went back to his father’s home to sort everything out. When he arrived he went to his father’s study and surprisingly found the Bible in the same place on the desk where he had slammed it many years before. With tears in his eyes he opened it and out slipped a key with a BMW logo and a note saying “paid in full”. Just like the son in this story many miss out on the gift that God has given us…salvation through His Son. All we need to do is accept His free gift. At DRM we consider every person who comes through our doors a gift from God. God loved us so much that he sent his son to die and be a payment for our sins (see John 3:16). If we receive His gift it is PAID IN FULL! Please remember the Mission during the holiday season as we continue to reach out with God’s love to a lost and dying world. GIVE A COAT. SHARE THE WARMTH. Thank you, Burlington Coat Factory, KIDS Fashion Delivers and the many donors who help us care for the least, the last, and the lost of the Tennessee Valley! teachers are not only wonderful people, but also phenomenal teachers who teach and walk in the Word of God. They are doing a great job in reshaping me and the other men and women in the recovery program to be more like Christ. I hate the fact that I lost my faith for a few years in my addiction, but now I have found the Lord and have a relationship with Him. Anything and everything is possible with God! “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 Justin Nicolow FOR YOU Keith Overholt, MBA President/CEO MISSION MOMENTS from all of us at the Downtown Rescue Mission 2
