SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application
and Prayer. It’s just one chapter per day, a simple way to
start a personal time with God.
WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED
• Get a Bible. Get a translation you like and understand. The New International Version (NIV) or The
Message (MSG) is a great start. You can read online at
youversion.com or download the free YouVersion app
to your digital device.
• Get your SOAP reading plan. Download a
copy at shorelinesoap.com and click on the chapter for each day; it will take you right to an online
bible. To get the daily chapter digitially, “like” us at
facebook.com/shorelinesoap, subscribe on Twitter to
@shorelinesoap, or download our app and click on the
“Bible” tab.
• Start a journal. This is just for you; it doesn’t have
to be done any particular way. You’ll start to see that
jotting down what you learn as you read and what you
hear God speaking to you will really help you grow. If
paper isn’t your thing, create an online journal.
• Scrap Paper or Task App - Use this to jot down all
those little annoying things that pop into your head
while you’re trying to focus. Doing this clears your mind
and gives you a “To Do” list for later.
HOW TO DO A SOAP DEVOTION
Set a specific time and place where you meet God
each day. It can be at the beach, the kitchen table, your
favorite spot on the couch. If you set an “appointment,”
you’re more likely to show up. Here’s what to do:
S = Scripture
Take your time reading and let God speak to you. Highlight, underline or place a mark in the margin of your
bible next to the verses that stand out. When you are
done, reread the verses you marked, look for one that
particularly spoke to you, and write it in your journal.
O = Observation
What do you think God is saying to you in this verse?
Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and help you understand. Write this verse in your journal in your own words.
A = Application
Personalize what you read by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now, then write it in your journal.
It could be instruction, encouragement, understanding
of something new, or correction for an area of your life.
P = Prayer
This can be as simple as asking God to help you apply
what you read, or asking for more insight on what He
wants to show you. Prayer is a conversation, so allow
time to sit quietly and listen for what God has to say.
And that’s it! If you have any questions about SOAP,
feel free to ask. There’s never a dumb question.
