BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Born and raised in Southern California, Mr. Bremer first
became interested in the fa sci nating endeavor of genealogy
at the age of thirteen . Hence, he now has ove r thirty years
experience as a genealogist. He attended Brigham Young
University, and in 1961, attended the Eleventh Annual
Genealogical Inst;tutc sponsored by the National Archives
and American University.
,
1
Former Research Specialist for the Genealogical Society
In Salt Lake City, and Founder of the Federation of
Genealogical Societies, author of Compendium of
Histor/cal Sources, Editor of the Roots Digest Magazine,
are among a few of his credits and achievements.
Probably the one characteristic above all others that makes
Mr. Bremer so in demand and such a delight to listen to, is
his ability to answer questions from his audiences. In this
manner, he not only makes the seminars more personal but
is often able to help each individual in attendanc~. And he
encourages tape recording.

Green County, GA., researchers have long been frustrated by a failure to find
many of that county's early records because they were taken many years ago to the
Duke University Library at Durham, N. C.
Now these documents are being returned, including 1788-1837 and 1854-59 tax
rolls, registration books for land lotteries and many other items. Some records
from other central and south Georgia counties are included.
The records are being inventoried and catalogued by Georgia's Department of
Archives and History, which will microfilm the material.

Some records wi II disagree with others and you have
to avaluate them as logically as you can. Info!'mQ~
tion from a death record can be tricky and it is not
olways 100% accurate. Why? Simply because it is
not oh"oy:i a JTler.iber of the immediate family who
5ubmits the record. Fa, example •• Mary Jane. died
in her late
eo's,
the last surviving member of her
fami Iy. Her husband was dead, there were no living
children. The infcnnunt was the undertaker and he
knov.. nothin3 about her family . Or possibly the head
nurse at ~he nursing horne was the person who supp.
lied the doto and recalled (but she wosn't 100% corta in) that
Jonos talked sometimes about Kansas
so probably that was where she had. liv:ed as a child
' ' 5.
There ·is an assumption which could appear on a
death record as a foct ••. yet it is not. People or.
apt to be cCllled certain given names or nicknc.mes
and sametim,s the nickname is not given a certain
person because it is the shortened fonn of the given
name but rather for a personal whim. My Dad often
coiled mo 'Dolly' but it was just his nome for me
and not a contraction or abbrevi9tion or nickname for
Dorothy. Dolly is sometimes a nickname for Mary.
Bill can bo for Williom, Wilfred, Wilson or Wilburn.
The same problem of inaccuracy can occur if th& the
person lives in a tOVin that has several counterparts
in other states. Take Williamstown . . Vermont and .
also in Massachusetts .. and other places ' as well.
If the death occurs in Massachusetts the tendency
would bo to assume that Williamstown Massachusetts
was meant .. but
if
the informant didn't know .. most
anything could be put down on the sheet.
Cemetery records are faulty fo, many of the same
rea&on~ •• the person is dead and therefore, someone
81 so is supplying the informati.on.

Sprin l'! field.
However, you are luckier if it is Springfield than if you are dealing
with towns named Clinton (21), or Franklin
and Madison ( 18 each) or
Greenville (17).
Our forefathers seemed to have had little orip, inality when naminl'! new
towns or communities as they frequently named their new community the same
as their former one.
But, perhaps they were merely trying to bring a part
of their former home with them.
In the United States we can find cities with world capital names:
Brisbane 0), London (2), Moscow (2), Rome (4), Berlin (6) and that most
~lamorous
capital of all - Paris (8).
Three-fifths of our states named a county for the father of our country
- Washington.
Other most often repeated county names are Jefferson (26),
Franklin (25), Lincoln (24), Jackson (24) and Madison (20).
Only two states have county names
beginning with the letter Z - Texas
with Zapata and Zavala counties and South Dakota with Ziebach.
begins with the Jetter X.
the letter X:
No county
Only two cities in the United States begin with
Xena, Ohio and Xavier, Kansas.
Compared to foreign countries our nation seems to have shied away from
lengthy names for cities.
Aside from double nam es , do you know of a town
with more letter s than the fifteen in Co rrectionv i lle (Iowa)?
In fact
cities carrying thirteen or fourteen lettters are rare and usually rely on a
"hur," (Fredericksburg) or "ville " (Collinsville, Bartlesville) to achieve
one of that len gth.
