Sloths
Sloths are very slow-moving
mammals. They spend most of the day
sleeping upside down in the trees.
Everything they do takes a long time.
When sloths crawl down to the ground,
it takes them an hour just to get there!
At night, they eat leaves and small
twigs, but they don't eat a lot because
they are so slow. In fact, sloths are so
slow-moving that little green plants
grow on their fur!

41 Homework 5
The Slow-Moving Sloth
Dear Parents:
Thank you for your help and encouragement! Practice at home is an important part of your child’s
success.
In this unit, your children learn about animals of the
rain forest.
Note: If a word is underlined, it hasn’t been practiced
at school. Help your child with the word if needed.
Homework Routine
Please listen to your child read one story, twice in a
row, each day. Remember, a small amount of reading
each day is better than a lot in one day. You may wish
to make your child’s Read Aloud Story a part of your
bedtime routine.
After listening to your child read a story, ask questions
as indicated. Encourage your child to talk with you
about the story and what he or she liked. Have your
child reread the story. Then sign and date the story. Please return this little book to school every day so we
can acknowledge your child’s efforts. When the book is
completed, it will belong to your child.
See that silly sloth,
Hanging in the tree.
His fur is brown and green,
So he is hard to see.
See that silly sloth.
He moves so very slow.
He will climb and crawl,
But hardly seem to go.
See that silly sloth.
He doesn't like the ground.
He will stay in his tree
And not make a sound.
See that silly sloth.
He is very shy.
He will not let you pet him,
Even if you try.

Anacondas
Anacondas are the biggest snakes in
the world. They live in the rain forests of
South America. These big snakes grow
to be very long. In fact, an anaconda can
grow to be as long as a school bus!
Anacondas live near streams, watching
and waiting for their next meal. Some
anacondas are so big they can eat pigs,
deer, and even jaguars. Someone once
saw an anaconda that was 28 feet long.

2. How long can an anaconda grow?
3. Why can an anaconda eat a pig, deer, or jaguar?
The rain forest is full of interesting
animals. This habitat has slow-moving
sloths and big strong jaguars. There
are many animals in the rain forest that
we can only see in a zoo.
If you went to a rain forest, what
animal would you want to see?
a. A sloth
b. A jaguar
c. A snake
d. A frog
In the next stories, you will read
about some of the animals that live in
the rain forest. Some of the stories are
fact and others are fiction. Watch for
the story that tells which animal you
might not want to meet if you went to
the jungle.

Come Down and Play
One day, Snake saw Sloth hanging in
her tree. Snake was hungry, so he said,
"Oh, Sloth, come down and play with me."
Sloth said, "Why, thank you Snake,
but I think I will stay up in my tree."
Snake said, "Why, Sloth. I think that's
rude. Come play with me."
Sloth said, "Oh, Snake. I am not rude.
I am a mammal and you are a snake.
Snakes eat mammals. I do not want to be
your food!"
Snake thought for a moment. Then
he said, "Slow-moving sloth, I thought you
would make a fine, fine snack. But you
are much too smart. I think I will go find
something else to eat."

What are jaguars? Jaguars are
mammals. Just like other mammals,
they breathe air and have fur. Jaguars
also have backbones and take care of
their babies.
