School Year in Review
What a great year! Did you know that MPUE organizes annual inter-school field trips for all EnglishUkrainian Bilingual Program (EUBP) students in the Province from grades 4 to 8? This gives the
students the opportunity to meet their peers from other schools and have fun experiences together.
Grade 4 students visited the Italian Cultural Centre where they learned about geography, history and
their favorite part - Italian food … PIZZA! For the second half of the day students went to the Leo
Mol Gardens in Assiniboine Park to learn about Ukrainian artist, Leo Mol, and experience his
sculptures. Grade 5 students attended the Legislature during the fall session, for an opportunity to
tour the building, learn about how our Provincial Government works and experience Question Period!
Grade 6 students attended a 3 day language camp at the University of Manitoba campus. They
experienced cultural presentations and activities at many of the university departments, challenged
themselves with physical activities such as rock climbing and archery, learned cultural dance, drumming
& martial arts and enjoyed a zabava with live music played by former EUBP students!
Finally - Grade 8 students went on a 3 day Venture to Vegreville Trip - a bus tour to Alberta and
back with stops at significant Ukrainian historical sites such as the Ukrainian Heritage Village and
Mundare along the way. They even stopped in Saskatoon for the Vesna Festival - a Ukrainian Cabaret!
Also, did you know that MPUE hosts a Year End Family Celebration where students of all ages and
their families are invited to celebrate the end of another successful school year? The Graduates of
each School are recognized with a special presentation. This year, each Graduate in attendance
received a special medallion. MPUE chose to purchase these gifts as $2.00 from each will be used to
assist families that are internally displaced refugees in Ukraine. Support will come to these families
with clothing, school supplies, hobby supplies and recreational materials, coordinated by Project
Liubov - Love from Winnipeg.
MPUE congratulates all EUBP graduates on a job well done & and we wish you the best of luck in the
future! PS. Never forget to use your Ukrainian skills! They’ll come in handy for sure. Ґрателюємо!
Finally, a big thank you goes out to the following individuals who are leaving the EUBP:
Judy Hnatiuk, Educational Assistant, RF Morrison Elementary School
Randall Routledge, Principal, Ralph Brown School
Monica Sim, Teacher, Ralph Brown School
Ricki Valcourt, Principal, RF Morrison Elementary School
Farewell to these EUBP teachers and administrators! We have truly appreciated your hard work and
support over the years and we wish you much success in your future endeavors and much deserved
rest in retirement. Welcome to all new principals and teachers!
If your school has news, events or information that you would like to share in our MPUE Newsletter, please send
them to our office ([email protected]) and we’ll include them in our next newsletter.
We would like to include
upcoming community events in the next newsletter, so please send them! Next Deadline: September 30, 2016
Дякуємо! Thank You!
Thank You For Your Support
MPUE would like to THANK and acknowledge the following organizations for their outstanding financial support and donations for this year’s EUBP
student events, and field trips. Without their assistance we would not be able to offer the many arts,
cultural and educational experiences to our students. We especially want to recognize Ivan’s
Auto Body of Winnipeg for storing our Santa Parade float.

MPUE President’s Message
The end of the school year is always a flurry of activity, year-end assemblies, field trips and general excitement
by students and teachers alike. July and August will bring change, a chance to slow down, to enjoy time with
your family, visit new places and have adventures together. Manitoba has many beautiful places to explore and
opportunities for fun and celebration.
2016 marks 125 years of Ukrainians in Canada. The first Ukrainian settlers arrived in
Canada in 1891 and immigration from Ukraine continued in 4 waves. Canada today boasts
over 1.2 million people of Ukrainian heritage. It always amazes me that our children
attend school to learn about Ukrainian culture, heritage and the language with other
children whose families have been in Canada for many generations or whose families have
arrived last month! There are also many children enrolled in the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program
(EUBP) who are not of Ukrainian decent, but their families value the richness of cultural experiences and
how learning an additional language expands a child’s opportunities in life. What a rich experience and
world view that our children can learn from each other.
There will be many events and activities over the summer and throughout 2016 to celebrate this
milestone. You will see the Ukrainian Canadian Congress commissioned logo that celebrates the four
waves of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada and the strength of our Ukrainian-Canadian Community
today.
To mark 125 years of Ukrainians in Canada, MPUE is undertaking an archive project in partnership with
Oseredok. The goal is to document the beginnings of the EUBP in Manitoba and the role of MPUE in
establishing the program in 1979. It is important to know your past to help direct the future!
Wishing you and your family a fun and relaxing summer.

The Osvita Foundation Update
Ф УНДАЦІЯ О СВІТА
The Osvita Foundation Inc. is a charitable Foundation, run by a volunteer Board of Trustees. It serves as the fundraising arm of Manitoba Parents
for Ukrainian Education Inc.
Every year the Osvita Foundation Inc. (Osvita) selects a member of the Manitoban / Ukrainian Community to honour at the Annual Testimonial
Banquet Dinner. This person/organization must meet the following criteria to be selected for this honour: has enhanced or promoted Ukrainian
language, education, or culture; provided outstanding service in the Ukrainian Community; be a Manitoban of Ukrainian descent; promotes their
personal Ukrainian identity; and is an upstanding citizen of the community.
This year Osvita celebrated 125 years of Ukrainians in Canada and recognized Dr. Oleh Gerus – a distinguished
historian of Eastern Europe – on Wednesday, June 8 at Canada Inns Club Regent. Dr. Gerus specialized in researching
Ukrainian history, Ukrainians in Canada, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the late Metropolitan Ilarion. He has made
great contributions to the University of Manitoba and in the Ukrainian community. In his semi-retirement, Dr. Gerus is
researching Ukrainian refugees during and after World War II as well as working on a 125 th anniversary project in
conjunction with Oseredok. During the evening Dr. Gerus told his own personal story on being a displaced person prior to
coming to Canada. It allowed us to better understand some of the challenges facing refugees in those days and even
today. His talk helped to tie together the 125 Year Celebration of Ukrainians in Canada and his honoring.
Osvita would like to thank all the EUBP students and their teachers for their art contributions to enhance the evening. On
display were the Taras Shevchenko art panels, displays illustrating the
student thoughts on the 125th Year Celebration, and the 12 school displays and a background
slideshow. Thank you as well Oakbank Elementary and Springfield Middle Schools for providing a
beautiful song, dance and 125th themed poem to the audience. Thank you to the teachers
preparing the students and a big thank you to the parents for taking the time to bring their children
to this special event. We very much appreciate your efforts to have your children show their
talents and knowledge of our Ukrainian traditions.

I personally want to thank the entire Osvita Board and Advisors for their commitment and time. It
is an honour to volunteer with this group of people. Thank you also to the Ukrainian Community,
school boards, trustees, school administrators, teachers and all the parents for supporting this
organization, MPUE and the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program.
This banquet is testament to the coming together of many different people and organizations to celebrate the amazing work of people in our
community. What we accomplish together in taking care of our youth now is what will allow us to maintain a strong Ukrainian and Canadian
community into the future.
For those who would like to contribute to The Osvita Foundation please contact us by emailing Osvita at [email protected], call our office at (204)
942-5405 or email me directly at [email protected].
Wishing you a wonderful summer.

When Should Kids Be Taught About Money?
Many children`s lives are filled with nice things - camping trips, lake life, music and dance lessons, a wide
range of electronics, and much more. But household income can drastically change all this upon the sudden death of the family`s breadwinner. Without adequate life insurance, maintaining a comfortable lifestyle can be very difficult.
The imprint that money makes on youth lasts their entire lives. Reflect on your own experiences and
suddenly links to your spending habits and your concept of money becomes clearer.
Counting quarters, dimes, and nickels in Grades 2 or 3 is great, but children need to be introduced to
budgeting, foreign money, and the way loans, interest, and borrowing work at a young age. If the schools
lack in this department, then parents become responsible for teaching their children what the allotment
is for the family grocery bill, or why mom and dad only have 40 channels on their cable plan, when their
friends have 500.
Remember your own personal shock when you realized how much money your parents earned, or what
your childhood home cost?
Children should be getting their first bank account between the ages of 8 and 12. They should be allowed to shop for things like school supplies under supervision with a budget and list.
