WELCOME
On behalf of The American Turkish Society, I would like to welcome you to our
fourth annual gala dinner, celebrating partnerships between American and Turkish
companies and honoring the extraordinary business leaders who create them. Since
New York is the headquarters of our Society and the hub for global business, it is
appropriate for us to shine a light on the decades-long and prosperous business
connections between the United States and Turkey.
This year, we are commemorating The Coca-Cola Company and Anadolu Group’s
booming partnership in Turkey and the region. Coca-Cola İçecek is one of the most
successful bottlers in the Coca-Cola System worldwide, having first introduced
Coca-Cola to Turkey in 1964. We are honored to present The American Turkish
Society Corporate Partnership Award to Mr. Muhtar Kent and Mr. Tuncay Özilhan
for this exemplary U.S.-Turkish cooperation. Tonight’s event is made even more
significant for us by the fact that our U.S. honoree is also Turkish born and is a
member of our Board of Directors at The American Turkish Society.
The American Turkish Society’s inaugural gala dinner in 2006 celebrated the joint
venture of Ford Motor Company and Koç Holding in Ford Otosan. Our celebrations
continued in 2007 with Citi and Sabancı Holding’s partnership in Akbank, and in
2008 with GE and Doğuş Group’s partnerships in financial services, real estate and
media. With business relations between our two countries growing ever stronger,
we look forward to showcasing many more successes.
Tonight’s event is critical to The American Turkish Society’s mission since 1949:
to enhance business, political and cultural ties between Turkey and the United
States, through thought-provoking events, scholarships, fellowships, and arts &
culture programs. We are honored to celebrate our 60th anniversary this year and
look forward to ever expanding our programs and impact.
Your support tonight provides the critical resources to sustain The American
Turkish Society’s mission and fuel its growth. We appreciate your participation
in this celebration and, given our shared interest in Turkey, look forward to your
continuing involvement in all of The Society’s programs.

GALA CO-CHAIR’S MESSAGE
Distinguished Guests of The American Turkish Society,
Dear Friends of the American Turkish Society,
It is my pleasure to join you in honoring Muhtar Kent and Tuncay Özilhan for the
exceptional achievements of their respective companies, The Coca-Cola Company
and Anadolu Group. Their partnership in Coca-Cola İçecek, which is thriving not
only in Turkey but also in the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East,
exemplifies the significance and promise of U.S.-Turkish business ties in our
global economy.
It gives me great pleasure to honour Tuncay Özilhan and Muhtar Kent. I have
known Muhtar since he was a child.
I am also delighted to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The American Turkish
Society, which has played a critical role in promoting U.S.-Turkish friendship.
I congratulate The Society and its devoted members and friends.
I hope you will join me in recognizing the remarkable work of Muhtar Kent and
Tuncay Özilhan, and in wishing them continued success.
They are both visionaries. They are both dynamic businessmen and they both
operate in a multinational environment.
They are successful industrialists of our country. Their activities, both at home
and abroad, have brought great prestige to Turkey, and they more than deserve this
recognition.
I wish them continued success.
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
Rahmi M. Koç

The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company, refreshing consumers with
nearly 500 sparkling and still brands. We offer more than 3,000 products to consumers together
with our bottling partners. Our mission is to refresh the world, to inspire moments of optimism, to
create value and make a difference.
The product that has given the world its best-known taste was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8,
1886. Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a local pharmacist, produced the syrup for Coca-Cola®, and carried
a jug of the new product down the street to Jacobs’ Pharmacy, where it was sampled, pronounced
“excellent” and placed on sale for five cents a glass as a soda fountain drink. 123 years later,
through the world’s largest beverage distribution system, consumers in more than 200 countries
enjoy The Coca-Cola Company’s beverages at a rate of nearly 1.6 billion servings a day.
Globally, we are the No. 1 provider of sparkling beverages, juices and juice drinks and ready-todrink teas and coffees. Along with Coca-Cola®, recognized as the world’s most valuable brand, the
Company’s portfolio includes 12 other billion dollar brands, including Diet Coke®, Fanta®, Sprite®,
Coca-Cola Zero™, vitaminwater®, POWERADE®, Minute Maid® and Georgia™ Coffee.
The Coca-Cola Company is a truly international company; more than 75% of our products are sold
outside of North America. Employees from more than 50 different countries work at The Coca-Cola
Company Headquarters in Atlanta. Worldwide, The Coca-Cola Company employs a total of 92,400
associates, a number that increases to nearly 1 million when all employees in the system are counted.
The Coca-Cola Company believes in supporting the sustainability of the communities where it
operates. In 2007, The Coca-Cola Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation made charitable
contributions of $99 million to community initiatives worldwide.
Anadolu Group, whose foundations were laid in the early 50’s by partners İzzet Özilhan and Kamil
Yazıcı, has over 20 thousand employees working in its 65 companies and 38 plants in 13 countries,
from the Adriatic Sea to the Pacific Ocean including Turkey. The Group mainly operates in the
beverage, automotive, finance, and pencil/stationary sectors. The Group has also entered into IT,
electronics, energy, food, and, most recently, healthcare through Anatolia Health Center (ASM).
Anadolu Group, which produces and markets famous brands in Turkey, has also been successfully
expanding abroad, making collaborations and forming joint partnerships with multi-national
companies. As a part of a partnership agreement with The Coca-Cola Company, Anadolu Group is
the 10th biggest Coca-Cola bottling company in the world, operating 13 plants, managing production,
marketing and sales operations in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan,
Jordan, Iraq and Pakistan.
Anadolu Group is the creator of the Turkish brand Efes Pilsen, one of the most popular beer brands
in Europe. In addition to Efes Pilsen, Anadolu Group presently operates 10 beer factories and 4 malt
production plants in Russia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Serbia, and recently signed an agreement
with Heineken and bought Georgia’s leading beer company Lomisi.
Other Anadolu Group relationships include: a business partnership with Isuzu in commercial vehicle
manufacturing; licensed production agreements with Miller, Beck’s, and Foster’s beer brands; a
partnership agreement with Faber-Castell for pencil and stationary products; partnerships with Kia,
Lada, Honda and Lombardini in automotive and engines; partnership with Samsung in electronics;
agreements to sell LS Tractors from South Korea and Greely cars from China, as well as Cooper
Tires in Turkey; and a licensing agreement with McDonald’s.
As part of its social responsibility policy, Anadolu Group provides significant support to education,
health, the arts and sports. Its leading basketball team, Efes Pilsen Sports Club, recently celebrated
its 30th anniversary and 12th championship in the Turkish Basketball League. Anadolu Education
and Social Aid Foundation grants scholarships and builds institutions in education, health and
social areas. Most recently, determined to provide modern healthcare service for Turkish people,
the Anadolu Foundation created Anadolu Health Center (ASM) through a strategic alliance with
Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Coca-Cola İçecek (CCOLA.IS) (“CCI”) as a listed company on the Istanbul Stock
Exchange, is one of the strongest and most respected bottlers in the Coca-Cola
System worldwide.
The addition of Pakistan to CCI’s territory in the last quarter of 2008 has effectively
doubled the size of its consumer base, bringing its reach to a population of 335
million.
CCI is a local company with the majority (50%) of its shares owned by Anadolu
Group. While 20% is owned by The Coca-Cola Company and 5% by Özgörkey
Holding, the remaining 25% of CCI’s shares are publicly traded.
Effectiveness and cost-consciousness make up the core of CCI’s business methods
and supply chain management strategies. In addition to its sales and distribution
productivity, CCI’s cost-cutting and environmental projects in the areas of energy
and water consumption make it a company that has exported its best practices to
the worldwide Coca-Cola System.
CCI’s business is to produce, sell and distribute sparkling and still beverages,
primarily brands of The Coca-Cola Company (“TCCC”), in its territories.
A collaboration with Anadolu Group which started in the 1990s in Central Asia
and South Russia has now become a growing family across Turkey, Pakistan,
Central Asia and the Middle East with more than 11,000 employees in 10 countries
covering a geography close to 6 million km2, including 20 production plants with
almost 5 billion liters of production capacity.
CCI offers its consumers a wide range of beverages, including sparkling beverages
as well as an expanding portfolio of still beverages (a category that includes juices,
water, sports drinks, energy drinks and iced tea). The core brands in all markets are
Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola light, Fanta and Sprite.
CCI continues to grow steadily in all the categories and in all the markets in which
it operates thanks to its extensive product portfolio, logistical competencies, and
focus on effectiveness.
Turkey, accounting to 79% of CCI’s operations, is the flagship of CCI.
Over the last ten years, CCI has undertaken investments worth of $600 million in
Turkey, including its newly completed 7th plant in Southern provinces of Turkey.
Aside from consistently growing the business in Turkey, CCI continues to attain
stronger positions in all its markets with growing economies, populations and
young demographics.
With a well-timed entry into the Middle East market, CCI has demonstrated its
competency and capability when exporting the knowledge and experience that
it has built up over the years in its Turkish home market to new countries and
adapting the same to local conditions wherever it goes.
Similarly, CCI has completed the strong corporate framework that will be needed
to translate the huge potential that exists in Central Asia into performance.
In keeping with its principle of “Less water, more drink”, CCI strives constantly to
reduce the amount of water needed to produce a single case of beverage. Over the
most recent two years, CCI reduced the average consumption of water per liter of
beverage produced from 1.76 liters in 2007 to 1.6 liters in 2008.
CCI is working constantly to make efficient use of energy in all our production
processes as set out in our energy productivity targets. As a result of ongoing
research and improvements being made on this front, the amount of energy required
to produce a liter of product has been reduced by a total of 16% since 2002.
CCI is a corporate citizen which is aware of its responsibilities towards its
stakeholders and which acts accordingly. In 2008, CCI was audited according
to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) criteria for compliance with the four
principal components of corporate social responsibility, Workplace, Marketplace,
Environment and Community. The findings of this audit and the progress made by
the company in this area were publicly announced, making CCI the first company
in Turkey to publish a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report complying
with GRI standards.
CCI is one of the most highly regarded employers in its area of business and the
one that most people prefer to work for. It continues to build on that reputation
without exception. CCI’s human resources practices rank it among the leading
companies in every country in which it operates.
It is essential for CCI to constantly strengthen and build upon its continued ability to
generate value for its stakeholders. CCI is correctly structured, is dynamic, and has
successfully incorporated the realities of the different markets in which it is active
into its business model. Most important of all, CCI continuously demonstrates its
superior and sustainable competency to manage differences.

cultural exchange, and networking; informs the American public about Turkey’s

Turkish arts and culture; and develops philanthropic initiatives, especially in the form
of disaster relief in Turkey.

celebrating its 60th anniversary this year as the oldest institution dedicated to
building bridges between Turkey and the U.S. in order to achieve common goals
of peace and prosperity.
