Trockland completes transaction for ‘Checkpoint Charlie’
Berlin, 20th November 2015. The Berlin-based Trockland Group has successfully finalised the transaction
leading to the acquisition of the last two undeveloped plots of land at Checkpoint Charlie – the historical
former border crossing point – from the Irish property group Cannon Kirk. Spanning across a floor space of
approximately 9,100 m2 in total, the heart of the project is set to be an exhibition space reflecting the history
of Checkpoint Charlie. Alongside this space, the Trockland Group plans to create a hotel, retail spaces and
offices, as well as apartments.
“We are already in constructive dialogue with the district council and the respective senate administrators
and are determined to develop the project in a way that best serves the interests of Berlin,“ explains Heskel
Nathaniel, CEO of the Trockland Group. The goal is to create an atmosphere that protects the historical
significance of Checkpoint Charlie: “We are aiming for high quality architectural style and sophisticated
concepts in order to really do justice”.
“We are pleased that by working together with the Trockland Group, we are able to discuss the design of
this historical place,“ says Tim Renner, the Secretary of State for Culture. “There is perhaps no other place
in which the Cold War is so historically represented as Checkpoint Charlie; no other place in which historyin-the-making was as clearly visible as in the powerful image of the confrontation of tanks here. This is
apparent by the striking numbers of guests visiting our city, as well as local men and women from Berlin,
who now flock to the historical centre of Checkpoint Charlie every single day. Where, if not here, can you
witness the magnitude of the history of the European division?“
Checkpoint Charlie is undoubtedly one of the most symbolic locations in Berlin. After the Berlin wall was built
in 1961, it emblematised the four-power Allied ownership of the whole of Berlin. Today, Checkpoint Charlie is
not only one of the most important historical sites in Berlin, but is also one of the most popular attractions for
visitors to Berlin.
