fields of Poe studies, musicology and aestheticsowe a debt of
gratitudeto May GarrettsonEvans forher 'Music and Edgar Allan
Poe' (Johns Hopkins UniversityPress, I939; reprintedNew York,
I968), which lists 252 compositionsbased on Poe's works and discussesthemin the introduction. Two small supplementsto the listare
R. C. Archibald's note on three pieces in Notes and Queriesof 7
September I940 (pp. I70-7I) and Irby B. Cauthen's note on four
more, in the same journal, of March 1949 (p. I03). It would seem
time to add to these listingsa large number of titleswhich indicate
the inspirationofferedto modern composersby Poe's works,as well
as 56 antedating Dr. Evans's publication in I939. She seems to have
relied almost solely upon entriesin music library catalogues which
are arranged under authors of words. While engaged in exploring
music collections in the United States and Western Europe for a
listingof musical settingsof Shelley (now numbering I200), I was
able, throughextensiveuse of catalogues of titlesand composers,to
findsettingsofPoe whichhad been overlooked. In the BritishMuseum
thierewere several Victorian settings. In Washington I found that
the poets' listing in the Library of Congress music librarywas incomplete, whereas pieces which had been registeredfor copyright
appeared oftenonly in the card catalogue of the CopyrightOffice.
This is now located across the Potomac, more than five miles away,
in Crystal City, Virginia-a distance posing a problem to those
wishing to examine the music which is catalogued there but which
is storedeitherin the Library of Congressor itsAnnex. Yet fortracing
the copyrightedAmerican settingsof an American poet's work the
two unitsmust be investigated.

The list below, numbering2oo entries,has 76 unpublishedworks,
while that of Dr. Evans has about 8o (if we add the ambiguously
printedmanuscriptworks of Holbrooke to 64 obvious manuscripts).
Another form of publication-three copyrightedrecordings-will
add a total of 34 settings,of which thirteenare duplicated among
my numbered entries(forthesesettingssee the appendix to my list).
In my listingthe followingsymbolsare used:

Wherever possible, I have sought to examine the music in order
to verifythe text, check the instrumentationor accompaniment, and
listthenumberofpages (exclusiveofcover and title-pages).The listed
manuscriptregisteredworks,I have assumed, would help to provide
insightinto the course ofmusical interestin Poe; filingan application
with a fee surely indicates a great deal, despite the strange, rather
naive spellings for the title 'Annabel Lee' or for 'Allan' in Poe's
name (misspellings are preserved in my text, often without any
'sic'). In theoryit is possible forvisitorsto examine the 'EU' entries
in the Library of Congress. In practice such pieces are kept in some
remotestorageplace, to be exhumed aftera delay and paymentof a
goodly fee. A few were placed in the main music collection because
of the Poe text, but for most of these entries I had to rely on the
copyrightcard catalogue. Even some of the 'E' or 'EP' (published)
entries seemed unprocurable. One should add that entries before
I890 in the copyrightcards of Washington offerformidableobstacles and can be had only by such devious methodsas looking under
likelypublishers, such as Schmidt of Boston, fora ratherdisarranged
listing.
The frequencyof the title'Annabel Lee' needs explanation. The
catalogue listingunder any formof this name (such as 'Annabelle
Lee') probably refersto a text that was originallyPoe's, no matter
how liberal the lyricist'sadaptation. A half-dozen of these pieces
which I managed to examine proved to be based on Poe's poem,
even when the copyrightapplication in the archivesor the catalogue
card abridgment (I consulted both on occasion) claimed the copyrightfor the words (as adapted, presumably) as well as the music.
Poe's lyrics, being in the public domain, can be subject to anyone's
torturous modification. Many of the versions may fairlybe con392

sidered parodies, rather than adaptations, but should nevertheless
be listed. There may be many settingsand adaptations of other Poe
poems, but it is virtuallyimpossibleto listthembecause of the nature
of the titles. For example, 'Eldorado' cannot always be deemed Poe's
poem, as I discovered through retaining for months a putative
settingby Pinsuti, which finallyturnedout to be based on F. Weatherley's 'Eldorado'. 'One Dream within a Dream' appears to be a
P'oe poem, despite the copyrighton 'words'-these probably being
adapted. A score of songs based on 'A Dream' or 'Hymn' are probably buried in the archives of the unpublished music, accessible to
anyone with a large fundof time and money.
Meanwhile, 'Annabel Lee' holds the crown in my listing. This
will serve to explain, in part, my puttingdown the phrase 'not seen'
for ambiguous entriesor for works that might be assumed to exist
in the Library of Congress. The items which T located throughthe
catalogue of the BritishMuseum (during the summer of I969) but
had no time to examine often do not bear this notation, simply
because only one of over 8oo pieces of music requested proved to be
miissing, probably through enemy action during the war. Any
composition published in England and sent to that repository
libraryafter 1945 may be assumed available forstudy there. If any
worthy foundation wishes to underwrite the collection of all the
nmusicbased on Poe texts, throughxeroxing and purchase of pieces
in print,this list may serve as a guide, supplementingDr. Evans's;
she was apparently concerned to build up the Poe music collection
in the Johns Hopkins University through purchase and through
photostats.
With referenceto the published material in the list below, there
are several items to which I wish to direct attention for various
reasons. In the Boston Public Library I found the piano reduction
of a one-act opera of I 896 on 'The Masque of the Red Death' by the
Russian composer Ostroglazov (no. 142). Another opera, based on
'Some Words with a Mummy' and called 'Allamistakeo' by Viozzi
irn 1957 appears in the LC catalogue (no. I89). Debussy's manuscript for 'The Fall of the House of Usher' has been published in
facsimile (no. 29). Amusing is Eduard Levy's settingof 'Annabelle
Lee' "by Shelley" (no. i i3), seen in the East Berlin Staatsbibliothek
catalogue; it turned up only under Shelley's name, of course. An
interestingpiece by Irving Berlin (no. I5) rather tangentiallyuses
'The Bells' for the 'Ziegfeld Follies of 1920'. Later, in I944, came
'Quoth the Raven', a humorous song parody for a film (no. 192).
Threeitems(nos. I02,
I i i
and I15) are arrangements
of Rachman-
inov's C# minor prelude. Mansfield's I937 arrangementof Lahee's
original settingof 'The Bells' (nos. I05 and I20) confirmsthe only
unlocated entryin the list. The earliest piece-by Duggan (no. 36)
shows the rapid currency of 'The Bells', a text used verbatim
for
Atkinson's i 862 piece (no. 7) and forAnderton'sof the I870's (no.

5). I should here explain, for music by Atkinson and others,
that the bracketed dates are invariably those of the BritishMuseum
catalogue, based on the date of acquisition; as a repositorylibrary,
it is presumed to be accurate about the dating. Petersilea's 'The
Bells',probablyan I850 or I85I composition(no. I44), can be seen
in the Houghton Library. After the Evans listing of Huybrechts's
'Three songs' thereappeared a published versionof thismanuscript,
seen in the BrusselsNational Library (no. 89). Another version of
Roberton's 'Annabel Lee' was recentlypublished by his widow (no.
An interesting entry is the 'Annabel Lee' of Templeton
I55).
Strong,in 1924, in view of Strong'sgiftof MacDowell's manuscript
'Eldorado' to the Library of Congress; the connection, mentioned
by Dr. Evans in her book (pp. 20 and 62) did not lead her to
Strong's 'Annabel Lee, an old-fashionedsong' (no. 179). Perhaps I
may note the Welsh words to Price's 'Eldorado' (no. 148), published
at Llangollen. As a slight summary of the chronology,I shall list
the items that precede the date of the Evans bibliography (1939):
5, 6, 7, 8, 9, II, 15, 17, 22, 26, 36, 40, 45, 47, 48, 50, 79, 8i, 83,
90, 91, 94, 95, 96, IOO, 102, 105, 107, III, 112, 113, 117, 119, I20,
121, 128, 129, 132, 136, 138, 142, 146, 149, 150, 159, i6o, I69,
174,
176,79,i8o,
i86, i88, I9I,
I99-a
totalof55 entries.
Finally I should explain the parenthetical notation 'Add. data'
afterthefollowing
entries:21, 29, 50, 82, 89, 101, 110, 119, 144,
155, i8i and I9I. Theserepresent
additionaldata forentriesappearing in the Evans list. The twelve may thereforebe considered as
reducing the total of 200 'new' Poe pieces to i88, to which 21 pieces
newly recorded should be added. I have no doubt that many more
will turn up in various collections. It is obvious too that composers
of varied musical stylesare continuing to find inspirationin Poe's
writings,so that a furtherlisting,perhaps periodically, should be
issued.

I. In I960 RCA Victorissued 'Poe forModerns' (LSP 2208; out of
print). The jazz band, under the directionof Buddy Morrow, with the
general supervisionof Charles Grean, played instrumentalselections
which were 'impressions'of the worksindicated by the composer (in
parenthesis)save forthefivepieceschantedor narrated:
Side A-'Murders in theRue Morgue' (BernieGreen); 'Annabel Lee'
(Charles Grean; see no. 52, for the only one of the set copyrighted);
narrated by Keith McKenna; 'Descent into the Maelstrom' (Ray
Martin); 'The Bells' (Bob Davie), chanted by the Skip-Jacks; 'The Fall
of the House of Usher' (Ralph Kessler).
Side B-'The
Pit and the Pendulum' (Bernie Green); 'Ulalume'
(George Williams), narrated by Keith McKenna; 'The Black Cat'
(Norman Layden); 'The Raven' (Bob Davie), chanted by the Skip-Jacks;

'Quoth the Raven' (JohnBarbe); 'The Tell-Tale Heart' (Ray Martin).
This information
was kindlysuppliedby Buddy Morrowhimself.
II. In I963 'Folk Ballads fromthe World of Edgar Allan Poe', a
Reprise Record (no. 6087), was issued by Essex Productions,Inc.,
containingtwelveballadsbasedon Poe's works,themusicbyJohnHabash,
withtheIvy League Trio singing.Edna Lewiswas responsible
forthethree
adaptationssung('AnnabelLee', 'The Bells',and 'The Raven') as well as
fortheversepresentations
ofninestories.All twelvehavingbeenpublished,
theseare indicatedin mylistingabove (56, 57, 58, 62, 65, 69, 70, 71, 72,
73, 74, 75). 'The Tell-Tale Heart' has becomea 'Western'withtheothers
closerto Poe's plot. There is much charmand vervein theserenditions,
especiallyin that of 'Eleonora' and it is regrettablethat this record,
graciouslyprovidedby Mr. Habash togetherwith the choral songs,is
out ofprint-unlikethesongs.The manyothermusicalversionsof Poe's
worksby Mr. Habash, listed above, he informsme, are planned for
futuremixed-choraleditionsand foranotherrecording.
III. In August,I969, RCA Victorput out 'Poe Throughthe Glass
Prism' (LSP 420I),
sung and played by the quartet The Glass Prism:
Augie Christiano,Thomas Varano, Rich Richards, and Carl Siracuse.
Eleven poems, all with the textsof Poe, are set to musicby two of the
groupmembersas follows:Augie Christiano-'The Raven', 'The Conq u
eror Worm', 'A Dream withina Dream', 'Alone'; Thomas Varano 'To-', 'Eldorado', 'The Happiest Day', 'Beloved', 'Hymn', and 'A
Dream'. None of these appears to have been published or registered
separatelyas sheetmusic.
