From Boyhood to manhood:
Indie film provides genuine take on growing up
priyanka godbole
editor-in-chief
Nearly every single song
in the soundtrack of Richard
Linklater’s ‘Boyhood’—from
Coldplay’s “Yellow”, to Goyte’s
“Somebody that I used to
know”- paralleled pop culture in the 12 year period that
the movie was filmed. The
nostalgia-evoking soundtrack
was just one of the elements
weaved in to this story of an
ordinary family going through
the ups and downs of life.
Boyhood, puts an interesting fictional twist on the classic ‘growing up’ story, as main
character Mason Evans (Ellar
Coltrane) is filmed throughout
a twelve year period along with
the rest of the cast who play his
friends and family. The cast
and crew met for a few weeks
each year to film. Mason literally ages onscreen as the
movie progresses, from a small
6-year-old boy entering kindergarten, to an 18-year-old
man graduating high school.
Coltrane provides a genuine
performance that truly resembles what growing up in the
early 2000s was like. The film
covers notable background
events through the times as
well, such as the war in Iraq
in the news, and presidential
elections.
Mason is shown growing
up alongside his sister Samantha, played by director Richard Linklater’s daughter Lorelei. The pair is portrayed as a
lively sibling duo that bickers
often, but ultimately relies
on each other through thick
and thin. Their relationship
is captured in such a manner
that it is easy to forget that
they are merely actors playing
roles, not family.
The film is set in various areas of Texas, as Mason’s
family is shown to move frequently due to his mother’s
search for a lasting career.
The children grow up in an
average neighborhood, with
average family problems, and
average experiences.
The
simplicity of the plot however,
is its strength. The Evan’s
family allowed me to look
back onto my prior experiences growing up, and recall
all the emotions I felt going
through experiences similar
to those on the big screen.
Divorces, drunken stepfathers, and first girlfriends /
breakups are just a few of the
events shown from Mason’s
perspective in Boyhood. The
movie clocks in at 2 hours
and 44 minutes, but not one
minute is spent in boredom.
If anything, the movie leaves
one feeling as though they
have a connection to the characters, and must keep watching
to see where life takes them
next.
An independent indie
film, Boyhood can be viewed at
various theaters across Omaha
for a limited time. The movie
is set to be released on DVD in
early October of 2014, and will
be available to rent via Redbox
around the same time.
Boyhood skillfully manages to draw the viewers into
the lives of the characters,
making it difficult to deal with
the abundance of emotional
moments shown on screen.
It is witty, sad, uplifting, and
genuine throughout. Linklater
chose to attempt the arduous
task of filming the same cast of
children and adults from 20022014, and successfully created a
beautiful motion picture unlike
anything ever before.
