Quick Guide What is Geology Download? Geology Download allows registered users of Geology Digimap to select and download British Geological Survey (BGS) data for use in GIS software. Users can order multiple map data products for their selected area. Get started • Go to: http://digimap.edina.ac.uk/ • Click Login and use your institutional login details. • If you don’t have an active registration, you’ll be prompted to register. What map data is available? • British Geological Survey DigMapGB - onshore geological mapping at 5 scales, from 1:10000 to 1:625000. All available in Shape format. • British Geological Survey DigMapGB has a selection of layers, including superficial deposits, mass movement, artificial ground and linear features. NOTE: layers provided vary by scale. • The Superficial Deposits Thickness Model (SDTM) is a raster-based dataset demonstrating the variation in thickness of Quaternary-age superficial deposits, derived from borehole information and geological map data. • Offshore Geology at a scale of 1:250000, which includes bedrock geology, fault lines and seabed sediments. • Lexicon of Named Rock Units information about all allostratigraphical, lithostratigraphical and lithodemic units of member and higher rank that are used on BGS maps. • Onshore Borehole Index, with over 1.3 million entries. • Geological Indicators of Flooding –information on areas where Superficial Deposits show evidence of flooding. Areas classified as high or low risk. • Permeability Indices data based on the DigMapGB 1:50000 scale. The Permeability Index consists of a three-part code representing: Predominant Flow Mechanism, Maximum Permeability and Minimum Permeability. • Hydrogeology indicates the aquifer potential of rocks. Updated September 2015 • Hover over Geology, Download Geological Data then click Geology Download. You may need to agree to the licence, if you haven’t done so already. Download Process 1. Select area • Search with a postcode, place name or British National Grid reference. Or pan/zoom the map to locate your area. • Select your download area on the map, using one of four methods available under Step 1: draw rectangle, select visible area, use coordinates or use tile name. 3. Add to basket • Click the Add to Basket button 4. Request download • Check your order. You can preview the area and remove items. • Click Add More Data to select more maps. • Options - you may be able to change version, format, theme and/or layers. • Name your order. • Click Request Download. 2. Select maps • Check the box(es) next to the map product(s) you wish to download. • 1:10000 Geology and 1:25000 Geology Onshore Geology are not available for the whole of Great Britain. Try clicking Show Grid/Overlay on the right of the map to see what areas are covered. 5. Download data file • You will receive two emails from Digimap. • Click the link in the second email to download your data file.
