As much as we may try to avoid conflict, or protect our children from it, we cannot deny that disputes are a part of life. The way children deal with disparities depends on their developmental level and past experiences. The good news is that resolving conflicts requires strategies that can be taught, and when applied, they help people to be a better friend. We can start by teaching our children to Stop and Think before taking action. Our goal is to teach them how to respond to a situation rather than react to it. This can be done by looking for effective ‘cool down’ strategies such as taking deep breaths or finding a pleasant ‘go-to’ spot for a few minutes. Conflicts can be resolved with a cool mind and a calm demeanor. The value of using ‘I-statements’ in expressing self cannot be overemphasized. An I-statement has three parts – I feel (state how you feel); When you (state the action that was hurtful); So next time, please can you (state what would be more effective and not hurtful) instead? As we teach our children to use these, we encourage clarity by focusing on the impact of the other person’s actions on their feelings. Using I-statements avoids blame, and thereby increases the likelihood of being understood. In addition to guiding our children on how to express themselves, we need to teach them to be good listeners. This helps them to understand the other person’s point of view. Both sides then need to brainstorm options that will make everyone happy. While looking for potential solutions, we need to ensure that our children are choosing to be kind as well as fair. Time and again, we need to encourage this quality by praising them when they act in a gentle and caring manner. Finally they put the chosen solution into action and see how it works. In case it does not work for either party, we need to encourage our children to go back to brainstorming stage and come up with other possible solutions. When children are taught these skills in childhood, they are more likely to form close emotional ties and maintain warm, meaningful relationships with others throughout their lives. Dia Odhrani Counselor| Raffles World Academy General Primary Secondary Events-CCA School Clinic News from Grade 2 The Grade 2 students celebrated their learning through the Science Fair on the 25th of January. This was a culmination of 6 interesting weeks of inquiry of how ‘Living things adapted to transforming Habitats’. It was truly a scientific buffet that was a visual feast as well as food for the brain to each person who viewed the Science Fair. There was information on the various habitats of the world and the animals that adapt to it was truly very educational. Students inquired into various adaptions that enabled livings things to survive. The Scientific Process guided the inquiry. Students’ interest sparked many healthy discussions and lead to hands on experiments. The connections that students made to the Dr Seuss Story of The Lorax made students aware of the UAE’s effort towards sustaining its environment. We will be stepping into Unit 4 shortly but the students would surely have fond memories of Unit 3 which taught them the value lesson of the need to General Secondary School Clinic News from Grade 3 Grade 3 have had a wonderful time investigating the states of matter. During our third unit Grade 3 became knowledgeable scientists and completed many experiments. Our first learning experience involved figuring out how the particles behaved in the different states. Grade 3 demonstrated this using their own bodies! They packed themselves tightly together to represent a solid while they moved more freely to represent liquids & gases. We then observed how matter changes through our chocolate experiment. We floated chocolate over different temperatures of water and recorded our results. Some of us were lucky enough to have some left over chocolate to munch (sugar -free of course!). One of our most exciting experiments was trying to find out what was the fizziest soft drink. We were given Fanta, Cola & Sprite. We weighed the soft drinks while they were very fizzy, then we stirred them for as long as we could to make them flat. We then weighed them again to see which drink has the most carbon dioxide and hence which was the fizziest. Can you guess which one it was? Pop by Grade 3 to find out. General Primary Secondary Events-CCA School Clinic Camping! Amir Saleh Ayoub Grade 8E General Primary Secondary Events-CCA School Clinic News from the Events Corner INTERNATIONAL DAY – 23rd FEBRUARY 2017 Dear Parents, On Thursday, February 23rd, Raffles World Academy will be holding its annual International Day. To celebrate the diversity of over 60 nationalities being represented in our school, a host of events is being planned for this day. This occasion will be held on our campus sports field. Following the incredible success of last year’s event, we hope to encourage the same level of support from our school community for our 2017 celebration. We would like to invite parents to set up a stall/display providing information about the country they represent. Some suggestions include details on the location, photos of the country, food from the country and also some information on the traditional clothing of the country. We encourage stalls to be interactive with some games or educational features. In addition to a stall we strongly encourage all parents to help their children organize a performance for their country. This year we wish to give more exposure to the talents of our students and this can only be done through your support. If you are able to organize this type of activity then please make this known in the reply slip and also email our music teachers, Mr.Mackessy (Secondary) and Mrs Bath (Primary). Please bear in mind that there will be auditions for the child performances. You will be told about dates and times of auditions once you email our music teachers. Performances should not be longer than 5 minutes each. Students are also needed to participate in the Parade Of Nations during the opening ceremony. During this parade they will walk with their nation’s flag and to the sound of a song chosen by them. If interested to participate in this, please email Ms Shagufta at [email protected]. This would have not been possible without your kind donations and support from our board of directors. With the help of Dubai Cares and Buildon, we will be visiting the sites of these two schools. The trip will take place in November 2017. During this visit, we plan to break ground of the two schools and help build the foundations. We would like to invite our students to be a part of this wonderful trip. The trip will take place in November 2017 but we will be selecting students in March and April. We will be choosing 6 students from each Innoventures Education School to participate. If you are interested, then please email the following people in your respective schools. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Raffles International School: Ms. Emma Turnbull – [email protected] Collegiate American School: Ms. Megan Richardson – [email protected] Raffles World Academy: Mr. Andrew Jennings – [email protected] Dubai International Academy: Mr Marc Whitehead – [email protected] Our first cohort of GIVE ambassadors organised assemblies in each school to advertise this noble project. We hope your child had a chance to attend the assembly to understand more about what this experience entails. If there are any more questions, please email the teachers mentioned above. Innoventures Edcuation is very happy of the opportunity that our students are given. Our students will not only have a chance to build the school that will educate many Nepali citizens but they will also have a chance to live with the local community. Some of the cultural activities from the first trip included morning yoga, learning to sew and learning how to make bread. However, the feedback from our first cohort was that the interactions with the local community were the most treasured memories they will have from their visit. In the meantime, please look at some pictures from the site of our first school which we helped to build in November 2016. You can see that the local community have almost finished the structure. This is all thanks to you! Let’s continue giving as we have done and let’s continue to improve the lives of this wonderful community. Work is almost finished on the main structure Final additions to the roof Join our GIVE Team!
