KeyVocabulary Instructor: Jessica Ackerman Course Title: Date: Child Services Informative Research Paper Summer 2013 Specific Topic: Performance Objectives: After completion of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Identify 4‐6 key vocabulary words that continue to repeat in credible sources selected by student. 2. Rate themselves on the terms as to how well they know the words. 3. Find a partner that has at least 2 key words similar to them and understand relationships between key terms 4. Using credible source define key terms. Standards: CTE & CCSS 11‐12.L.4 Determine meaning of unknown and multiple‐meaning words and phrases a. Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. c. Consult specialized reference materials to clarify the word’s precise meaning. d. Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context). 11‐12.L.6 Demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when conside ring a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression. 11‐12.RST.4 Determine key terms, and other domain‐specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context Assessment: Materials: Procedure: Students will compose definition for at least 4 key vocabulary words they will use in composing their research paper. Words marked as having 0 knowledge in the beginning, will have a meaningful definition that supports students research paper. Credible Sources ‐ Student selected to support individual research Instructions for Sensible Sentence Highlighting Highlighters Key Vocabulary Webbing Page Literacy Strategy used: Sensible Sentence Highlighting Introduction and Method of activating prior knowledge – Using the Staff Handbook of Falcon’s Nest Preschool, key words based around philosophy will be pulled out. Using Sensible Sentence Highlight students will visually see and hear how key word definition can be composed using text. Individual: Have students identify 4‐6 key words that reappear in their sources. Have them rate themselves on the terms as to how well they know the words, * knows well + heard of it 0 uncertain To reflect on ranking, have student select a synonym for word and an illustration to represent the meaning of word. Group: With partner who has at least 2 key words similar, define using credible sources. Extend into learning more about the word by using context clues to transform sentence example and definition into a passage for research paper. Entire Class: A‐Z Definition Wall will be created A‐Z Definition Wall will be posted and used when peer‐editing to examine if Application of Material: technical vocabulary used or over used (encourage to use synonym). By defining – selecting a synonym – and composing a sentence with key word Extension Questions: will student incorporate more professional, technical vocabulary when composing a research paper?
