WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE SCHOOL
Economics and Accounting
Last Friday, six Economics and Accounting students along
with Miss Whiteley and Miss Ross had an early start to their
school day by attending a post budget breakfast with the
Minister of Finance, the Honorable Bill English. Mr English
spoke to those present, giving an overview of the budget
and what it means for Southland, before relaxing with a
hearty plate of porridge. The students found the breakfast
informative and came away with a clearer idea of how the
latest budget directly impacts their community.
Learning Hub
Once a week the Learning Hub have Patu McLeod from the Southland Sharks come in and work with a group of
students to develop their confidence, team building and focus skills. Patu works for Youth Service and is focussed on
supporting students. His outgoing manner and love of basketball is allowing him to support some of our Gore High
Students.

HEALTH INCUBATOR VISIT
Recently, 27 Gore High School students visited Southland Hospital to view health professionals in their workplace and
to experience a health agency work environment.
The day started with a general orientation programme, which included the responsibilities surrounding infection
control, and privacy and confidentiality considerations, as students are considered honorary staff members for the
duration of the visit.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Gillian Sim, Nurse Researcher and Public Health Nurse outlined to students that they are in a privileged position of
being in the hospital as an observer for the day and therefore need to be mindful about keeping information they
may see or hear to themselves.
Infection Control
Katherine Clarkson, Registered Nurse and Primary Health Nurse Educator,
outlined her background in health. Katherine has worked both in the
community and in hospitals. Currently part of her position is to work with
new graduate nurses who are working in the community on the Nursing
Entry to Practice Programme.
Career Talks
Devin deGroot is a first year House Officer, and an ex pupil of Gore High
School. Devin shared with the group his background and how he enjoyed
science in school which lead him to think about a career in health. Devin then
demonstrated how to use a stethoscope and encouraged the students to listen
to each others hearts.
Dr Steven Murugayah shared with the students his background and work as a
doctor at Southland Hospital. This is his 4 th year as a doctor, currently a
Medical Registrar. He showed the students through the Emergency Department
(ED) while describing a patients journey - how people are admitted to ED and
what tests and examinations might be undertaken in ED.
Tracey Wheeley, Dental Therapist believes wanting to work with children and
having a great personality with a sense of humour is important in her field of
dental care. The students then had the opportunity to look inside the Dental
Truck which enables local children to attend for dental care.
Jan Tait, Incubator Coordinator for the hospital, took the other students to a
side corridor where they practiced manual handling techniques especially for a
person who is unable to move by themselves. The students then used a hoist
device to transfer a student from the bed to a chair.
SOUTH OTAGO HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE
Thank you to all the students, staff and volunteers who helped make our sports exchange with South Otago High
School run so smoothly. South Otago High School came out on top taking the overall win. Our students played with
spirit and showed great sportsmanship. Our senior netball teams and junior basketball team all came away with wins
and the Theatre Sports team achieved a draw. Our junior netball teams, rugby and boys football teams found the
competition a bit too strong on the day but can be proud of their commitment throughout their games.
