Denpasar, June 2012 I Dewa Ag Gd Ag Suryaningrat ii ABSTRACT The title of this study is Comparison of Two Maya Angelou’s Poems seen from Figurative Language. The poems used in this study are “I Know Why the Caged Birds Sings” written in 1969 and “On the Pulse of Morning” written in 1993. This study is aimed to find out the kinds of figurative language used in the poems, to analyze the meaning of figurative language that the poet want to convey in the poems and to compare the poems seen from the used of figurative language. The data in this study were taken through the internet. Documentary method was used as the method in collecting data; browse the poems of Maya Angelou through the internet. The data was analyzed by descriptive method using the main theory that was taken from the book written by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) entitled Interpreting Literature and the supporting theories taken from book written by Larson entitled Meaning-Based Translation (1998) and book written by Leech entitled Semantics (1974) The results of the study show that there are five kinds of figures of speech found in the poems; they are symbol, personification, metaphor, hyperbole, and allusion. Among the kinds of figures of speech presented in this study, metaphor and personification is the most frequent to appear in the poems by Maya Angelou. The use of figurative language in the poems is to construct the conceptual, connotative and collocative meaning. The comparison of both poems can be seen in used of hyperbole in the first poem and the used of allusion in the second poem.
