Fall 2015 Horn of Plenty Newsletter

MISSION
To alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while
encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education.
FALL 2015
Without your help, Reggie and Carolyn wouldn’t
get the food they need to stay healthy.
Struggling to Survive on Social Security . . .
C
arolyn and Reggie lived a modest but full life. They
own their own home in the heart of downtown
Phoenix and they even got to work together for many
years. He was a truck driver, hauling mobile homes and she
would go with him, driving the escort car in front of him that
warned other drivers of the “Oversized Load.”
A work injury changed everything. Reggie slipped on the ice
while hooking up a mobile home in Utah and shattered his
shoulder. He has had several surgeries but still has practically
no use of that arm. Carolyn, always beaming with a smile
whenever we see her at the food pantry, told us, “this gave me
a chance for a second career. I’m a people person, so I started
waiting tables at the diner by our house.” Working on her feet
for years has taken its toll on Carolyn and she is no longer able
to work and actually needs to have hip and back surgery.
Carolyn and Reggie come regularly to get food from
St. Mary’s. Carolyn shared with us that their disability and
social security checks total less than $1,000 a month. “It
doesn’t go very far,” Carolyn said. “Everything we have has
either been donated or is a hand-me-down. We don’t have a
computer, we use a prepaid cell phone and we have one oldermodel TV.” But what Carolyn is most concerned about is her
husband’s health. “I can get by with very little, but I worry
about Reg. This heat is terrible on him. We have fans but
without central air, it’s just really hard.”
Carolyn told us how much she and Reggie appreciate the food
from St. Mary’s. “We wouldn’t be able to buy this. I can make
good, healthy meals for us. Just knowing the food is there is
one less worry for us, and for that, we are so thankful.”

While this might seem like a simplified view, this “recipe” is the heart of what
makes St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance work. The only reason we are able to serve
hungry men, women, and children in our community is because you’ve opened
your heart and your hands to help those in need.
Thanks to your dedicated friendship, our hungry neighbors here
in Arizona have a place to turn for help. You’re helping older friends like Carolyn
and Reggie (cover story) and Michele (page 4) get the food they need to stay
strong and healthy. You’re also helping single moms like Emma (page 3) take
care of their families and feed their children. Your kindness and compassion
ensures every person who comes to us for food will walk away with their arms
full and their hearts a little lighter.
This holiday season, please take a moment to think
of people in Arizona who are struggling with hunger.
Then consider how you can lend a hand by supporting
one of our upcoming events — such as Super Saturday
or Operation Santa Claus — or by making a gift.
Thank you again for your continued support. You are
the reason our hungry neighbors will be able
to celebrate the holidays with a full table.
With thanksgiving,
Emma’s family has seen their share of tragedy . . .
But thanks to you, she can still keep food on the table.
A
bout two years ago, I was living in
another state. My parents watched
my children while I worked. They
were walking down the street at night and were
robbed and killed, right in front of my children.
They never found the guys that did this.
I packed up everything we could carry and got
on a bus with my three children to come to
Arizona for a better life. My children and I live
in a two-bedroom apartment. My seven-year-old
has epilepsy and needs medication. I also care
for my friend’s children because she is not well.
Every day is hard but I’m committed to my
children and want to get them the food they
need. I’ve been getting help from St. Mary’s
Food Bank for about two years. I don’t come
every month . . . only when we are really low.
The kids also get free breakfast and lunch at
school, so that helps a lot.
Your support of St. Mary’s is important. You
help people who need it even more than I do.
You help a lot of kids whose parents can’t afford
to buy enough food for them. Thank you.
SERVE HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS!
Can you imagine not having a turkey and trimmings on your
holiday table? And more importantly, going without food
the rest of the year? That’s the reality many of our hungry
neighbors in Arizona face. But since you care enough
to give generously, they can get the food they need.
Thanksgiving will soon be here, and thousands of your hungry
neighbors will turn to St. Mary’s for food. Thank you for
giving them hope and help this holiday season!
During the holidays last year, St. Mary’s Food Bank
provided:
• 23,030 turkeys
• 11.2 million pounds of food
Thanks to you, 250,000 families were served last holiday
season . . . but this year we anticipate the needs will be even
greater. Your support is critical to serve all the hungry
families in our community during the holiday season.

Starting Over After Serving Others by Michele
I used to run an overnight, emergency shelter for women and
children in California. I’ve always had a heart for people who
were homeless. Then in January, I moved here to be closer
to my sister and three of my grown children.
I’ve been looking for a job. I’ve been applying all over and
not able to find anything. I’m also working on my graduate
degree. I stay half the time with my daughter and the rest
with my sister, moving back and forth. My stuff’s in storage,
and it’s hectic.
“In everyone’s life there comes a time when
you may need help.”
My sister told me you can get food at St. Mary’s Food Bank.
I was looking for something to get us over the hump until
I get a paycheck. My daughter is in the same spot — her job
doesn’t pay much. I get widow’s benefits, but that’s it.
My sister is disabled and on oxygen, so she isn’t able
to work. Her neighbor, who’s in a similar situation, also came
with us to St. Mary’s. It was awesome. We got a lot of things
that we actually prayed about exactly, very specific things —
vegetables, fruit, white meat chicken. Even a whole flat of
strawberries! I was so grateful.
Humility is an important quality, and sometimes it’s easier
to give than to receive. You feel more in control. But it’s also
empowering to receive and to be grateful. I admitted that
I was in need, I asked for help, and I got it. That’s how I
look at it.
In everyone’s life there comes a time when you may need help.
Who knows what the future holds? When I came here, I felt
the Lord put this place here for just this situation — not just for
me, of course, but for everyone. You never know when you’re
going to be that person who’s in need.
