Sainsbury Active Vouchers The PSHCE topic for this half of the term is Going for Goals, and assemblies have reflected that theme—I talked about the resolutions we make at the beginning of the year, and reminded everyone that it is a case where ‘deeds not words’ are vitally important! Mr Barrott threw out a challenge to everyone to set down their goals and make them SMART - Specific, Measurable, Attainable;, Realistic, Time-based. Mr Redmond went a little further...in fact, all the way to the planet Mars, reminding us of President Kennedy’s famous speech setting the goal of going to the Moon. Whatever the goals set for this academic year, we should be half-way towards attaining them by the time half-term rolls around. So, whatever the targets and goals you are setting—whether it is to gain a gold star for times table challenge, improve upon a sprint time—or maybe to be nicer to a sibling! - you can be sure that we are all supporting each other—just as we have been for all the events described in this Newsletter! On the following page Lily-Mae describes how she put together her World War Two project. The Year 5 display is up in the Assembly Hall, and I would urge everyone to go and have a look—there are fantastic models, folders full of information about many aspects of this part of history, and photographs of people from our own families. My Project By Lily-Mae Cooney Why? We were given a choice to make what we wanted for our World War 2 project set by our brilliant teacher Mr Baker. We were given ideas and suggestions of what to make. Where? I gathered information for my booklet off the internet. Also I made my models at home with some ideas and assistance off my parents. My mum went out to the Range craft shop and bought me some art and craft materials. When? I did my project during the holidays and at the weekend, or basically at every free opportunity I had available. I always made sure my surface was clean before I began working on my project. Who? My parents gave me some ideas and assistance, but other than that I mostly did it on my own. In the cockpit of my plane is a toy soldier I have used as the pilot. What? The house is styled to look like what it would in World War 2. The Shelter is an Anderson Shelter and, underneath is a Morrison Shelter. The posters of people in World War 2 will have been drawn, and been published on posters that will have then been posted around the country or even worldwide. The brief was to produce portraits of each other—here are some of the images created…. Inspiration Magritte….? A reminder please about parking— local traffic officers will be on patrol this term and have warned that they will prosecute car owners with vehicles parked on the pavement of Rishworth Mill Lane. Please avoid this— there is space by the swimming pool, and I would urge dropping off rather than stopping when possible! Medicines: If your child is being sent in with any medicines, this must be discussed with Mrs Battye—we cannot allow medicines or tablets in schoolbags, and there must be express written permission given for the storage and administration of any medicines in the School. Parents will be aware that the School takes online safety and security very seriously, as an aspect of safeguarding and child protection. Children are taught, in an age appropriate way, ways to protect themselves online. However, from time-to-time, Calderdale Council issues updates on this matter, including information about websites or apps which have the potential to cause concern (usually social media that allows messaging, sending video etc.) A recent message concerned two such apps, and I reproduce the message here for parents: Firstly ‘Live.ly’ is an app being used by many children as it provides the opportunity to group chat. Whilst the app is only meant to be able to access contacts already on a child’s phone, the opportunity for friends of friends to join groups has resulted in people unknown to the child being able to access a group. The second is ‘Yellow’ which is essentially an online contact app for children which works in a similar fashion to ‘Tinder’ the idea being that you can swipe through people and then choose someone with whom to meet up. Clearly this again poses numerous risk factors for children. A useful list of websites / apps which are potentially concerning due to messaging capacities is compiled by the NSPCC, and can be found at: https://www.net-aware.org.uk/ As always, the message is to be vigilant and aware rather than alarmist, and to ensure that children are aware of Last week, the children in the Reception class visited Gordon Riggs Garden Centre. They had to have a good look at all the flowers on offer and decide which ones they could buy to plant in their own garden. Of course, they had to work out how much their purchases would cost—and how much change they should get! So, a lot of decisions to make, and the kind staff at Gordon Riggs in Todmorden were very patient with all our young shoppers. Next comes the equally hard work of making sure that all those bulbs and seeds grow! ...and after the purchases, a bit of time to look at the fish, of course! Happily, the luxurious smell wafts through my nose creating an extraordinary thought that there’s still hope to get off this dazzling, deserted island whilst the ramshackle boat stands as still as a stone, waiting. Tom Lumb 27 Jan 2107 An incredible glut of Mathletics Certificates in the most recent Awards Assemblies—some fantastic points totals gained by children right across the School—several gaining more than one certificate, more Silvers, monster totals for Year 4….exciting stuff, and congratulations to ALL Matheletes you have been working so hard over the first weeks of the term. Year 4 Get Lit Up in Lava Lamp Experi- Year 5 Visit Stockport Air Raid Shelter Chess Club experiment with Fried Liver! I was amazed when I went along to the Year 4 classroom this week only to find that Ava was demonstrating an amazing scientific experiment—a home-made lava lamp! Using materials found in any home, she demonstrated how to make a lava lamp of your own, complete with underlighting! A lot of fun—and learning about materials as well! Strangely, Fried Liver has nothing to do with what you might find in the Dining Hall: it is in the name given to one of many standard chess openings. In the Intermediate Chess Club, the children have been trying out a number of openings, with the idea of developing aggressive modes of play. Anyone interested in learning the game is very welcome to come along on Monday lunchtimes—more advanced players can pit their wits against each other on Tuesday evenings after School. Year 5 enjoyed an amazing day out at Stockport Air Raid Shelter. What really impressed the adults who accompanied Year 5 was the comment made by the tour guide, who said that Heathfield was one of the best, most interested and most wellbehaved groups ever! The picture shows members of Year 5 trying out some 1940’s fashions. The three stages of a feast: 1. Preparation 2. Eating 3. The washing up! Wednesday 25 January 2017 saw the start of this year’s Sainsbury’s Active Kids Promotion in store. The scheme runs until Tuesday 2 May 2017 and vouchers can be collected at all Sainsbury’s Stores, Petrol Stations or when ordering groceries and goods online. The vouchers can then be exchanged by the school for sporting and catering equipment. For every £10 you spend (for every £5 when using a Sainsbury’s Local) you will receive 1 voucher with the value of all vouchers earned being printed on one piece of paper. Please don’t let this piece of paper get lost amongst the rainforest of other vouchers that get printed off with your receipt! All members of the Heathfield community have been tremendously supportive of this scheme in the past and I would be very grateful if you would once again spread the message throughout the school and encourage everyone to start collecting. Vouchers can be put in the collection box in the main entrance. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Follow the Heathfield story on Twitter @RishworthS
