By aiding these adults in pursuit of their educational goals, we have created and continue
to nurture impact that goes far beyond themselves; we influence children and families as
well. Thank you for your continued support in all that we do:
We honor Dr. Laubach for publishing “Laubach Way to English/Reading”
which is the curriculum we use which has proven successful.

MILLIONS OF CHILDREN HAVE NEVER BEEN READ A BEDTIME STORY!
The New York Times recently published the photo below and its caption.. It is so true! Our program
helps by teaching the parents English language skills (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding) so
they can help their children at home. Many of our student parents and grandparents are now helping
their children with homework and other school activities, and are reading stories in English to their
children and grandchildren.
We have over 800 adults living in Northern Nevada struggling to speak, read, and write in our language. They need your help. The ESL In-Home Program is a nonprofit volunteer organization whose
mission is to help adults in English Language Skills. Adults who can read and write are more likely to be
involved in educating their children who are our future …………………….. Literacy changes lives!!!!
GET INVOLVED
If you would like to make a difference in someone’s life, we want to hear from

From the Founder and Executive Director
It is my privilege to dedicate this issue to the 721
community volunteer tutors
who have helped over 4,800
adults and their families
since the inception of the
ESL In-Home Program of
Northern Nevada almost 12
years ago.
Florence G. Phillips
I am grateful for the
success stories from both
tutors and students that
have been passed on to me
over the years and their support
which has been very much appreciated. They believe in the
power of literacy to end poverty, injustice, and discrimination. Dr. Frank Laubach’s philosophy of “Each one, teach one”
and his Laubach Way to English/
Reading materials have proven
most successful for our program.
We know that literacy helps
families become healthier, are
better able to support them-
selves, and become more productive members in their communities.
We continue to move towards a world in which everyone can speak, read, write,
compute, and use technology
to lead healthy, productive,
and fulfilling lives.
My best wishes to you all,
Florence G. Phillips
There’s a person waiting around the corner from you who wants to learn English.
