endings on base words. If a word
ends in a vowel + y, the word stays
the same when you add s, ed, and
ing. If a word ends in consonant + y,
the ‘y’ changes to ‘I’ when we add ‘s’
and ‘ed’ but it stays the same when
we just add ‘ing.’

first column. Other times the ‘ar’
together makes a long ‘a’ sound in
the first syllable as in the second

long ‘a’ sound in the second syllable
