11:50 a.m.-12:10 p.m. (Room 416) Presenter: Dr. Bryan Stone (History) Title: "Memories of Two Generations: Alexander Gurwitz of Russia and Texas" • Alexander Gurwitz was an Orthodox Jewish Hebrew teacher and kosher butcher in Russia who immigrated to the United States in 1910 at age 51, spending the last 37 years of his life in San Antonio. When he was in his early 70s, he wrote a memoir in Yiddish about his life, education, family in Russia, his immigration and settlement in Texas, and his decades in San Antonio, but this magnificent document was never published in English until now. I'll be discussing both Gurwitz's importance as a historical figure and my own process to bring his work to publication. Despite widespread scientific agreement, the media often reports on climate change as a debate. This talk will briefly cover the basics of the science of the current climate change trends. SESSION B (Room 416) 9:30 A.M.-10:30 A.M. 9:30 a.m.-9:50 a.m. Presenter: Glenn Madden (Surgical Technology/Allied Health) Topic: Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy aka Gallbladder Band-Aid Surgery • We will look at some of the reasons this surgery is so common in South Texas, and take a brief look at the anatomy/physiology and how we treat the problem of gall stones. However, many of the exercises and programs being offered as “functional” in actuality have no relationship with how the human body was meant to move. Movies, specifically, play a large role in how the general public views people with mental illness. We will look at some popular films to discover what Hollywood gets right and wrong. 11:10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Presenter: Sul Song (Mathematics) Topic: Existence of a unique solution to a system of equations modeling compressible fluid flow • The purpose of this presentation is to prove the existence of a unique solution to the system of equations under periodic boundary conditions starting by well-known Navier-Stokes equations, for a time interval in a compressible barotropic fluid. 11:30 a.m.-11:50 a.m. Presenter: Dr. Donna Huddleston (Nursing) Topic: Nursing Student Mission Trip, Iloilo City, Philippines • This presentation showcases the Del Mar College, Department of Nurse Education, Nursing Student Mission for two hundred people at a farm in the Philippines during Spring Break 2016. We also visited Central Philippine University (CPU) to present highlights from Texas Concept-Based Curriculum. Nursing students will share their impression of CPU, their ICU clinical at Mission Hospital, and a morning walk in the community to meet the residents.
