Principal’s Announcement
Welcome to Bulletin 32
This is a very special week in the lower school calendar
as Grade 5 students; Alexandre, Alex, Apolline, Beatriz,
Camden, Carlotta, Charles, Eric, Ido, Jill, Chris, Jules,
Lapo, Lara, Luisa, Lukas, Mehr, Moamen, Najd, Sacha,
Saevar and Tanysha celebrate a significant mile stone
in their lives. The PYP graduation on Thursday will be
complemented by two important Grade 5 events, an
MYP introductory presentation to parents and a middle
school transition day for Grade 5.
Just like this week, the main hall will suffer a multiple
metamorphosis as it will become the venue for two play
performances and two music shows, this is courtesy of
the Drama and Music departments and thanks to hours
of extra work done by the music and drama students.
I am pleased to report that Mr Andy Atkinson (ISL UK
School Director), Mrs Buurman-de Groot (parent) and I
had a fruitful meeting with Transport for London (TFL)
and Hochtief (Contractor) representatives on Wednesday
3rd June. It was encouraging to hear that there was
genuine interest in listening to our concerns and that
TFL is regarding our Health and Safety (H&S) concerns
seriously. Mr Kirit Patel (TFL Project Manager), reported
that they raised the H&S to level 3 (the highest in the TFL
procedures) and has commissioned an independent
H&S auditing company to inspect the consequences of
the temporary closure of the footpath. The inspection is
planned for this month and we have arranged to have a
follow up meeting with the same team for the last week
of term. It was advised to us that TFL will attend to all
recommendations made by this independent body and
hopefully, there will be a significant overlap between
our recommendations and the third parties.
I will circulate the date of the next meeting and extend
an invitation to all parents who wish to attend. We have
also agreed to meet regularly, at least once a month.
On the way out and informally, Mr Jon Elliott (Hochtief
Contractor Project Manager) mentioned to me that he is
reviewing the whole project with the view to introduce
some technological improvements that will reduce the
construction time considerably.
This was an amazing
week at ISL London
and Thursday broke
a record of events
where it began with
a superb Grade 2
breakfast at 8:30am
and ended at 7:30pm
with
Mr
Andy
Atkinson and Mr
Sahib Kassim (ASK
Planning) presenting
the
development
plans for the summer.
Enjoy reading!

How we Express Ourselves
Our final Units of Inquiry this half term
are looking at the Transdisciplinary Theme
of ‘How we Express Ourselves’. Different
grade levels are looking at developmentally
appropriate areas of the theme which
inquires into how we discover and express
ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs
and values. It also looks at the ways we
are creative and how we appreciate the
aesthetic as individuals. This links in
perfectly with our upcoming Celebration
of the Arts performance on Monday the
22nd June. Children are busy practicing
their songs and accompanying dance
routines. I can’t wait to see it! The visual
and performing arts; Music, drama, art,
dance; all these elements are vital ways of
expressing ourselves, and all can provoke
an emotional response. Not only do they
require learning specialised knowledge,
but they address those vital social and
communication skills. Drama and music
particularly focus on co-operating, group
decision making, listening, speaking in
turn, resolving conflict, adopting a variety
of group roles and finally presenting.
The confidence gained, the pride at
performing, the skills acquired cannot
be underestimated. This is why this
Transdisciplinary Theme is included, it is
essential to being human!
Grade 2 McCafe
As part of a recent Unit of Inquiry, the Grade 2 students
learnt about money. The class decided that they would
like to create and run a real-life cafe to get more hands
on experience with money, so that is exactly what we
did. On Thursday the 4th June, ‘McCafe’ opened for one
morning only. The students had created everything
for it; the name, the logo, menu, prices, music playlist
and their outfits. They practiced what they would say
and all the things that they would need to do for their
customers.

Personal Project Co-ordinator
Last week the interviews took place for the position
of ‘Personal Project Coordinator’ and we are happy to
announce the appointment of Ms. Mia Mogenson in this
position.
The Personal Project is a culmination of inquiry
where students show their ability to initiate, manage
and direct their own inquiry. It is the task of the Coordinator to manage the implementation, organisation
and management of the projects in school as well as
guiding the supervisors.
Where the Personal Project exhibition is still fresh in
the memories of our current Grade 9 students, we will
make a start with the introduction of the project to
the grade 9 students before we leave for the summer
holiday. This will enable them to think about ideas for
their projects over the summer and to give them a head
start in September.
A lot of work was done beforehand where the work
had to be prepared, mounted, printed and finally set up.
This was of course taken care of by the teachers but
a lot was also done by Mark McCullough and Daniyal
Syed, our Design assistants. Our new display boards did
make life a lot easier, especially where the Hall had to
be cleared to make space for the Midsummer Night’s
Dream performance.
A selection of work will be displayed for a longer time in
school, not just as decoration but above all to show the
high quality of our students’ work to our visitors.
This year was great but next year I’m sure, will be even
better!

Art and Design exhibition
We can look back on a very successful Art and Design
exhibition, which showcased the work of all Grade 6-10
students for the first time in the history of ISL London. It
was hearth warming to see the students explain about
their work to others and show their appreciation of art
and what they have learnt.

Thursday 25th June (date still to
be confirmed) All school
event All day Further
fundraising for Nepal
We would like to run one
more fundraising event
before the end of the year
for the Nepal earthquake.
Everyone,
hopefully
including all students and
staff, should choose one
person who they would like
to be a twin with for one
day! This involves trying to
look like that person for the
whole day, either by wearing
the same clothes or hairstyle
or anything that would
identify you with that person. This should be a
lot of fun and also hopefully raise more money for
those in need in Nepal.
There will be a panel of judges and the prize
(prizes) will be given out in the final assembly.
Start looking for your twin, you still have a lot of
time!

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’
Student review by Kaj - G9
To
Kill
a
Mockingbird, set
during the Great
Depression
in
Alabama when
racism
and
poverty were at
its peak, is one of
the great stories of social justice
as a white man’s word is held
against that of a black man.
Tom Robinson (Zackary Momoh)
is a crippled black man who
is accused of raping a white
girl. This character is brought
beautifully to life by the acting
of Zackary Momoh, especially
during the court scenes where
he shows how scared a black man would have been
against a white man. Momoh also makes the character
more believable than in the book, making the final
stages of the story more realistic.
Atticus Finch (Daniel Betts) is given the order to defend
Tom Robinson in court. However he is probably the
only man in the whole of Maycomb who would actually
want to defend him. Daniel Betts’s role also tells the
audience most of the life lessons from the book, which
includes that “it is a sin to kill a mockingbird” and does
so through telling his children Jem and Scout, as well as
their friend Dill.
Scout (Jemima Bennett), Jem (Harry Bennett) and Dill
(Leo Heller) are the picture of innocence in the story.
All growing up they have to deal with the constant
bullying because their father is defending a black man
in court. Jemima Bennett acts the character of Scout
beautifully, as well as doing a brilliant accent. However
Harry Bennett and Leo Heller’s characters seemed to
be very forced and not natural. This made Scout exactly
the way I imagined but made Jem overly aggressive and
Dill un-realistic.
Boo Radley (Christopher Akrill) is in the beginning of
the novel portrayed as a monster, but later becomes
a hero as he saves Scout. This was missing in the
adaption as it focussed more on the court scenes and
the story around Tom Robinson, rather than Boo Radley.
However as Christopher Akrill makes his appearance
during the closing stages of the play, he becomes a very
believable, shy and scared character.
Overall one of the things I liked from the play was that
the actors read from different copies of the book, as
it made me feel more engaged with the play itself.
‘To Kill a Mockingbird’
“Christopher Sergel’s adaption bring new life to Harper Lee’s novel”
– Kaj
Actors: Jemima Bennett, Harry Bennett, Leo Heller, Daniel Betts, Zackary
Momoh, Christopher Akrill
Director: Timothy Sheader
Genre: Drama
Synopsis: A remake of Harper Lee’s award winning novel to brilliant play
adaption by Christopher Sergel
Most character were brilliantly acted and made the
characters from the novel become very much alive,
this included Miss Maudie (Natalie Grady), Atticus Finch
(Daniel Betts), Scout (Jemima Bennett), Tom Robinson
(Zackary Momoh), Calpurnia (Susan Lawson-Reynolds)
and many more.
The play could have improved by making the character
of Dill (Leo Heller) and Jem (Harry Bennett) more
realistic. Furthermore why the play received four
instead of five stars was because a lot of scenes from
the novel were not included such as when Jem finds his
shorts sewn and folded together after he was shot at by
Nathan Radley, Scout’s school scenes, Aunt Alexandra,
the big fire and Scout’s distant family scenes. The play
could have received five stars if it focussed more on the
other parts of the novel as well as the court scenes but
overall a great performance.
