First Grade Newsletter Strawberry Point School Room 4 Monday, February 6, 2017 Thank you to the parents who were able to join us last Friday for All School Read. This is always a favorite activity of the children. Our next All School Read will be on Friday, March 3. On Tuesday, the children did a new piece of writing for Our Meet the Writers of Room 4 board. Please stop by the classroom to read your child’s latest piece of writing. Also, during Writing Workshop last week, the class continued to write teaching books. The children learned that when you teach someone something you do more than just plan. You also think about who you are teaching so you can imagine and answer the questions your readers might have. During Reading Workshop, the children continued to be Word Detectives. Their training is nearly complete so they will become official WORD DETECTIVES this week. 1 The Twenty-First Week In word study, the class continued to focus on silent e (Magic e) at the end of words. We learned for example that can becomes cane, pin becomes pine, and tub become tube. We also began learning about antonyms. In math the children learned strategies for solving comparison number stories. They also used a variety of strategies to add and subtract 2-digit numbers. On Wednesday, the class read books about Groundhog Day. Each child made a prediction if Punxsutawney Phil (the official groundhog) would or would not see his shadow on Thursday morning when he came out of his burrow. The class graphed their predictions. 7 children predicted that Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow and we would have 6 more weeks of winter. 13 children predicted that he would not see his shadow and it would be an early spring. Thursday, we watched two news reports to see Punxsutawney Phil. In both reports he did see his shadow so we have six more weeks of winter. Thursday, Room 4 meet with our fourth grade buddies from Ms. Monti’s class. After hearing the book Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch, the children made Valentine’s for Veterans. Today, Room 4 began a new social studies unit on the continents. The children watched a Brainpop Jr. to learn what a continent is, the names of the seven continents and something about each continent. Then the children used an Atlas to locate the continents and label them on a map. We will be doing more with this in the coming weeks. Attached you will find a Salt Dough Recipe for you and your child to make and bring to school on Monday, Feb. 13. We will be using the dough to make maps of the continents. Some parents have asked about bringing Valentines to school on Tuesday, February 14. This is an OPTIONAL ACTIVITY. If your child chooses to bring Valentines, please bring enough for the whole class. See list attached. This is a fun way for the children to be creative and to practice handwriting and writing skills. Believe it or not Wednesday is the 100th day of school. We will be doing a variety of activities to celebrate this special day. Everyone is doing a good job of returning their Reading Tickets. All Reading Tickets are due this Thursday, February 9. Please help your child return all his/her 2 Reading Tickets by Thursday.
