One way is to use a dictionary. But sometimes using a dictionary is inconvenient. Another way to figure out the meaning of a word is to use its word parts. Many words have prefixes and/or suffixes attached to a root word. Prefixes, suffixes, and root words are word parts. If you know the meaning of each word part, then you can easily figure out the meaning of the complete word. This strategy is helpful when reading, since it is sometimes awkward to stop reading just to look up a word in the dictionary. Reading in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It — DIRECTIONS: Look at the Prefixes: un- and re- page. Read the meanings of the prefixes to your parent or guardian. Then read the examples together for the words unafraid and retell. Next, look at the word unlock. Write its prefix and root word in the shapes below unlock. Then figure out the definition using what you know about the prefix and the root word. Write the definition in the bottom shape. Do this same thing with the word return. Look at the Suffixes: -ly and -ful page. Do the same thing on this page that you did on the Prefixes: un- and re- page. Turn to the Finding the Meanings page. Find the meanings of the words on the page. Write the prefix or suffix and the root word. Use these word parts to figure out the word meanings. Ask your parent or guardian if he or she agrees with your definitions. Talk about It — After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity!
