Tito Puente, Jr. delights S.A. audiences
Arts San Antonio delivered another
great performance for San Antonio
audiences Saturday, when Tito Puente, Jr., Henry Brun and a host of
Latino super stars performed at El
Tropicano Hotel on the River – inciting fabulous Salsa dancing and
Fiesta-style great cheer.

The Romeo and Juliet Ballroom at
for the sold-out Salsa show presented
by ArtsSA Saturday night. Local
dance studios Semenaya and Calle
8 brought their competitive dance
teams to get the party started and
performed dazzling routines, followed by the award-winning Latin
Dance Team from the University of
San Antonio.
The music was loud and intoxicating and as soon as they had their
chance, fans were showing-off their
own best moves too, while a veritable list of who’s who in the Salsa
music world played for them with
enthusiasm.
Brun, Madera, Rodriguez and
Brun’s incredibly talented band
opened for Puente, playing an amazing set that culminated with the classic sounds of Sofrico to loud applause
and more great dancing. And the
excitement grew as the moment drew

closer when the evening’s guest star
came out to perform.
After all, Tito Puente, Jr., a great
artist and percussionist in his own
right, is divinely inspired. His father,
“El Rey de los Timbales,” the legendences across the globe performing his
jazzy compositions with the signature
Latin twist and dazzling ability.
“They called him the King of Latin
music,” Puente said.
Puente, whose mission is to keep
his father’s music alive couldn’t
agree more. He understood the gift
his father, the celebrated bandleader,
left us. He came to San Antonio to
celebrate his father’s birthday with
fans, great music and a gorgeous
birthday cake, thanks to the staff at
ArtsSA.
“I embrace being Tito Puente, Jr.
I’m not the prince. I’m more like the
court jester,” he added.
Puente, 41, couldn’t be further
from the truth. His musical career and
abilities speak for themselves, and the
warmth and sincerity with which he
communicates, like his musical ability, is indeed reminiscent of his father.
And Saturday night, in the company of Latin music greats like Jose
Madera, Johnny Rodriguez, Henry
Brun and his band, Puente strutted his
stuff to the delight of the San Antonio
audience.
The consummate educator, Puente
patiently explained the driving force
behind all Latin music.
“The music is driven by the clave,
sticks,” he said.
Like his father, Puente puts new
sounds together, fusing his rock
sound. Still, his yearning is to make
sure new generations have a chance
to hear his father’s sound, and in that
sense, he keeps certain traditions
close.
The outstanding performances left
