The Wingspan Since 2012 Welcome Back to Overlook! A New Year Full of Learning Begins by Sara Ann Russo on September 14 Welcome back to Overlook, 7th & 8th graders, and welcome to your first year at Overlook, 6th graders! In case you haven’t noticed, Overlook Middle School’s schedule has changed because a block named “WINN” has been added. WINN stands for What I Need Now. WINN runs from 7:48-8:13, causing specials to run from 8:13-9:05. The blocks of the day are after Specials, as usual, but the length of each block has decreased. New Overlook Staff by Keira Mooney and Ana on September 04 We interviewed two of Overlook’s brand-new teachers to welcome them to the school! Welcome, Ms. Zanewski and Ms. Orcutt! Ms. OrcuttQ. Why did you decide to become a teacher? A. I didn’t entirely know I wanted to become a teacher at first. I majored in business and then went into psychology, but realized that neither of those things were what I really wanted to do. One day, I asked myself, “What do I like?” I remember liking history, and I decided to go out and try to do that. Then, I got into education, and never looked back. Q. Did you always love social studies growing up? A. I actually really started liking it in high school. In middle school, I didn’t enjoy it that much to say the least. But, in high school, when you start learning about World War I and II, those things intrigued me and I then realized that I loved history and social studies. Q. What material are you most excited to cover this year? A. I was excited to teach Europe, but then I learned that we might not even get to Europe if we don’t have time. However, I like learning about all the units. I believe that South America, all of Asia, Oceania, and Africa all bring something different and new to the classroom. Q. What is your favorite type of food and music? A. My favorite type of food would be chicken picatta, while my favorite music would be country. I like everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, but I listen to country the most. Q. What activities do you enjoy doing outside of school? A. I have a puppy, so I spend a lot of time with her. I like to go on hikes and I am also an avid scrapbooker. Ms. ZaniewskiQ. Why did you decide to become a teacher? A. When I was in high school my teacher thought that I should study early childhood, but I wanted to teach elementary. However, when I got to college I was instructed to teach both middle school and elementary. When people said that whoever taught elementary would change over to middle school, I never thought that would be me. However, it wasn’t until I observed a seventh grade science classroom I started to like middle school. Q. Did you always love science growing up? If not, what caused you to love it? A. I did always love science. The only time I didn’t love science was in high school where I took an advanced biology course, where the teacher drew me away from it. When I went to college, I took another biology course. My professor was outstanding. I wanted to be like him, a teacher that gets students engaged in learning; a person who draws their pupils to a subject and gets them to want to learn more about it. Q. What material are you most excited to cover this year? A. Definitely genetics. Genetics has always been one of my favorite things to teach because I love giving examples of how your parents hair or eye color affected you and you would figure out the equation of what other combinations you might have had. Q. What is your favorite type of food and music? A. My go-to meal is spaghetti and meatballs and chicken parm and homemade garlic bread, and my favorite music is country and all Disney music. Q. What activities do you enjoy doing outside of school? A. I love to dance. I have danced my entire life. I choreograph routines, and I have worked at Six Flags for the past seven years, so I can perform there, showcasing my talents I can’t do at school. I also love to hike in the White Mountains up in New Hampshire. CHECK OUT OUR ARCHIVES New 6th Graders Enter Overlook by Keira Mooney and Ana on September 12 To welcome the new students to our school, we chose to interview a few of our new 6th grade friends: Katelyn Butts, Delaney, Camille Morin, and Madi O’Brien . Q. How do you like having lockers this school year? K.B. I guess they’re better because no one can get to your stuff. It’s definitely easier. D. Currently, I can’t open my locker, but if I could, I would definitely like it. C.M. I like them because I can put my things in there and stay more organized. M.O.B. It’s much easier. Instead of having a closet to put your stuff in causing it so get smushed, there’s also space for our stuff. Q. What is your favorite thing about OMS so far? K.B. I don’t really know, but I guess I like the teachers. The teachers are nice. D. I like the field hockey the best. C.M. I like how we switch classes and how we eat lunch altogether. M.O.B. It would probably that everyone is very nice and welcoming. Q. Is there anything about this school you feel could use some improvement? K.B. I would have to say the desks. Maybe they could upgrade them. D. Nope. C.M. No, I like it a lot. M.O.B. No, just that I’m very small so I have to look up at everyone. Q. How do you plan to get involved this year? K.B. I would probably join a club. D. I’m not sure, but there is enough things for people to get involved in. C.M. I don’t know, but there is so many clubs and other things people can do. M.O.B. I don’t know, but there is definitely enough things for people to do. Q. Are you liking middle school so far? K.B. Yes, kind of. Well, it is school, but I am liking it as much as I can. D. Yes. C.M. It’s okay, but not really. I kind of miss my elementary school, and I don’t like how long the classes are. M.O.B. Yeah. Q. Do you like the use of Chromebooks this year in class? K.B. Yes, they are so much better than having iPads because iPads are hard to use and type on. D. Yes, definitely. C.M. Yeah, I really like them. You can take all sorts of tests on them. M.O.B. Yes, they’re very easy to use. Quick Stop Cafe To Showcase New Cart by Sara Ann Russo on September 04 The Quick Stop Cafe first opened in January of 1999 by the Achieve class and their staff members. The Quick Stop Cafe has been in business ever since, which means that this school year marks the 18th school year that Quick Stop has operated. When the Quick Stop Cafe first opened, many of the things we now purchase, such as muffin mix, blueberries, sugar, and types of chocolate chips, were donated by places, such as Dunkin Donuts, the Colonial Hotel (still donating creamers to us), and McDonalds. Back then, the Quick Stop Cafe was open on Fridays from 7 to 8 a.m., serving blueberry muffins, corn muffins, the special muffin of the day, coffee with cream and sugar, hot chocolate, and assorted juices. Now, the Quick Stop Cafe will be open every Thursday starting on October 6th, from 7-7:45 a.m. WINN (What I Need Now) Block Debuts This Fall by Ella Brostrom on September 21 WINN stands for What I Need Now. We have this class in either our our homeroom or with another teacher. If we need to get some help from another teacher we can go to their room and do that during WINN. We can also use this time to do any homework we need to catch up on or any class work that we still need to do. We can also organize our trapper keepers. Or if we don't have to do any of these things then we can read our AR books. 8 Orange Student Service Project on September 11th’s Fifteenth Anniversary by Aidan Nelson, Dawson Cinclair, Thomas Demeo on September 04 Eight orange’s students did a project on September 11ths fifteenth anniversary. Each 8th grade teacher contributed to the main topic. In science, Mr. Young had his students pick up trash around Overlook making it look beautiful. Some of the trash that they found were water bottles, broken pencils, food wrappers, construction materials (styrofoam, nails, screws, metal flashing) and a tire. In math, Mrs. Clabaugh led a discussion on volunteering and and service. After the discussion all the students filled out a pledge card on the topic “What can I do to serve”. These cards are displayed in the 8th grade hallway. In English, Mrs. Jensen introduced 3 memorials that are based on 9/11. They watched videos on the Ground Zero Reflecting Pool in NYC, the Pentagon Memorial in Washington D.C and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In Social Studies Mr. Lambert talked about the importance of local first responders. The students wrote thank you cards to the police and fire officials who serve in both towns. *Please Come check out the 8th grade hallway.* Summer Construction At Overlook by Aidan Nelson, Dawson Cinclair, Thomas Demeo on September 04 Over the summer Overlook has been filled with activity. Coming back to Overlook this year, you may have noticed the flags on the roof, or the construction workers walking through the halls. You may have even noticed the loud sounds from the roof and gym. For sixth graders, you may have heard the banging coming from behind the wall in the gym during morning meeting. Recently, Overlook has been having some construction done. To find more information about the Overlook construction we interviewed Mr. Saisa. Q. What changes have been made to the school over the summer? A. There has been a complete overhaul of the heating and cooling systems including all digital controls, 2 new boilers (one of them being a wood pellet boiler), and the ballast stone roof was completely redone with vinyl. Q. How were you involved with the construction? A. From the beginning, I was involved with the funding, arranging the main priorities, and I worked with the facility manager. Q. What challenges did you face with the construction? A. There are areas in the roof that were more damaged than we expected, the boilers that we needed to get into the building are too big so we had to cut a hole in the wall, and we had only two months to get all of this done! As you can see we are still finishing some parts of the construction. Q. What companies helped you work on it? A. The general contractor was a company called TRANE. They performed the heating and cooling systems installation, and then contracted other companies (sub-contractors) to get the rest of the construction done. They are performance based contractors, which means the company guarantees that the school saves an amount of money per month, then the school pays off the contractors with that saved money until they don’t owe any money. Overlook Fall Sports Report by Hannah Silverman on September Overlook sports are really kicking in. Tryouts are all done and the teams are going full steam ahead. The boys soccer team won their first game but lost the second. The girls team won the first game and tied the second game. I interviewed the top male and female runners from the latest cross country meets on Tuesday, September 23rd and Tuesday, September 30th. Isabella Allen was the fastest girl, and Aidan was the fastest boy. Isabella Allen was the first girl across the finish line, not just on our team but out of all the girls competing in the meet. She had a mere time of 14:02. Isabella has been on the cross country team since last year, when she was in 6th grade. Isabella also ran road races when she was younger. Her father also runs, so they have that connection. Isabella had a soccer practice to go to after the meet so she had no time to celebrate. Aidan was not the first across the finish line, he was 3rd. But he was the fastest member of the Overlook Cross Country team with a time of 11 minutes on the dot. Aidan is in 8th grade and this is his 3rd year running on the team. Aidan has a 14 year old brother who also runs. At the September 30th meet, we had the same winners. Bella thought she would do better than she had because she was “slow”. I didn't know running over a mile in 12:30 was slow. She's not sure if she'll do as good next time, and I don't want to jinx anything so I won't give my opinion. Aidan on the other hand, he was sure he would have the fastest time in the team. When I asked him if he thought he would win, his answer was yes. Aidan's time from this meet was 10:08, at this rate he'll be running in less than 10 minutes in no time! When I observed the members if the Cross Country team, I noticed Aidan was always first… except in warm-ups. Aidan and his friends liked to take it a little slow. Bella, I noticed, is always working her hardest. I'm sure they will both do great in the next meet! I watched the cheerleaders practicing outside of the school, they were amazing and beautifully choreographed! I was able to get a team picture before they left, but sadly the other team practices were already over before I had a chance to speak with them. Picture by Ella Brostro Creative Writing Corner by Skyla Nolan, Niev Collins, Keira Mooney on September 14 Part 1 of The Passage Diana It was a day like any other day. Well, not really. Diana Lesting, a short, blond 12-year-old approached Overlook Middle School, but at the doors, she stopped. Was it really too late to go home? She didn’t really want to go to middle school, anyways. Well, she thought, I’m already here, aren’t I? I might as well go in. So, she entered through the front green double doors, and headed toward the gym for the 6th grade announcements. On the way there, she found her friend, Jackie Hollman. Jackie was also a 12-year-old with short, brown hair. She was about Diana’s size, and had small, blue glasses. “Jackie!” Diana exclaimed. Diana ran to Jackie and walked into the gym with her. After announcements were over, the two girls half dashed to their homeroom, Mr. Potter’s lab. They listened to him talk about rules, take attendance, and watched him pass out locker combinations and agendas (they both agreed listening to the rules was very boring). Finally, when the bell rang for the end of WINN block, they headed their separate ways to specials. For Jackie that meant band, and for Diana, computers. Jackie Jackie then walked to Mr. Lordan’s room, clarinet in hand. She was expecting 50 minutes of music, but that’s not what she would get. Jackie accidentally went into the custodial closet next to the band room. She was about to leave, when the door slammed shut. Jackie scrambled to find a lightswitch in the pitch-black closet, but did not succeed. She accidentally knocked down shelf after shelf of cleaning supplies, revealing a black, wooden door. Jackie entered through the door, thinking it lead to the hallway outside, and fell 4 feet straight down into an abyss of darkness. Diana Diana, however, was headed to computers in the downstairs computer lab. On the way there, she thought she would get a drink. She got one by the water fountain across the hall from her specials class. After she had her drink, the bubbler retracted into the wall. Diana was certainly surprised, as that usually doesn’t happen. The bubbler’s retraction revealed two passages, one leading to Jackie’s location, under the east side of the school (of course, Diana didn’t know Jackie was under the school), and one leading to the west side. Diana approached, the west side out of curiosity. She looked over the edge of the pitch black casim, thinking, how did that get there? Just as she turned to tell the office, she ran into another 6th grader. “Thomas?” Diana asked. “You won’t believe what I found!” “Oh,” the tall, black haired boy replied. “I think I will.” With that, he just smirked and pushed her over the edge. Jackie When Jackie hit the cement, it was more painful than she anticipated. After she checked for broken bones (of which there were none), she stood up to examine her surroundings. She was in a gray room with a gray floor and a gray ceiling. There was however, one doorway. Careful to avoid another long fall, Jackie walked through to find a labyrinth of gray twists, turn and traps. “A maze?!” Jackie screamed angrily. “I’m in a maze?!” “Hello,” an unfamiliar voice said. Jackie looked around for the speaker, but didn’t find one. “My name is Jonathan Cort. I see you have stumbled upon my maze. At the center of it is a way up, and back to the school. Along the way are a few… obstacles that I added for a little extra challenge. Wouldn’t want it to be too easy for you. You will have two days exactly to get to the center, or you will be terminated. Have fun!” A countdown was then projected onto the wall behind her: 48:00:00. It was now or never. Diana Diana had heard the same message, so Jonathan hadn’t bothered to repeat it to her. Her own countdown reading, “48:00:00”, had started behind her, too, though, so she walked out of the gray room, identical to Jackie’s, and into the maze. She was presented two halls, one east and one west. Given her bad memories with the west side of passages, she chose the east one. What a mess I’ve made of things, she thought she walked down the seemingly endless hallway. She just kept walking for what seemed like hours, thinking the same thing over and over again, each time leaving a bitter taste in her dry mouth. More of The Passage by Skyla Nolan, in next month’s issue. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------It was first day of school… for me at least. It was 3 days into the school year and my parents decided to move, now here I was 2 weeks later standing at the doors of Overlook Middle School. It was already 3 weeks into school and now everyone but me were settled in. All these nerve racking thoughts rushed through my head. Finally, after it felt like forever I walked inside. I looked at pictures of happy kids and I thought,‘That’s NOT me’. The halls were quiet and empty. I headed for the main office but I tripped on a trapper keeper in the a next to the bathroom. When I tripped I pulled the fire alarm. WHOOPS! Almost immediately, loud alarms went off and kids went running in every direction! I was so lost and confused so I sat down and cried. My first day was so far a mess. Trust me, it gets better. After everyone had calmed down and I explained what had happened i finally got to my classroom. When I was assigned my seat I sat next to a girl named Chloe she had long golden brown hair, sparkly green eyes, and big glasses that had white polka dots that went all over the black frames. She wore jeans with a green jersey that said Overlook Soccer with the number 3 on the back. She said hello to me and we talked a lot that day on the phone after school It turns out, she was in ALL my classes and on my bus! She instantly became my best friend. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 1 Eyes are quite peculiar things. Every pair of eyes on this earth is different. Some may be electric blue, the same color as the sky, while others may be brown, brown and deep as the earth we walk on. A few will be a sharp and piercing grey, the color of metal, while many might be emerald green. Willow’s eyes were different, which was not a good thing in her colony. They were like a pond, luring you in but you could not get out. They were deep blue, the color of the ocean, but got deeper and murkier. Kane had never seen anything like them before, because ever since the Fire, scientists, trying to restore the population, had come to the conclusion of making small “towns” also known as colonies. At those settlements, everyone looked the same with brown eyes and blond hair. The only way to make this possible was for every pregnant woman to get her baby genetically modified by the colony’s scientists. Willow was completely different, which was a terrible thing for her and her future. Kane looked slightly different, too. With deep, emerald green eyes instead of brown, it just showed that the scientists’ method of making each and everyone of the population identical was not foolproof. This difference caused Kane to be an outcast, the loner kid at the back of the lunchroom, sitting by himself, while all the other similar kids chatted and gossipped away. This was because the town’s scientists always made the different people sound like they were enemies of everyone else. However, this did not bother him. Kane rather liked his own company, and did not need friends. Until he met Willow. At first, she too, had been an outcast. And, because of this common characteristic, she and Kane became friends relatively quickly. Of course, the two had many secrets together, one of which dreaming to escape their small, crowded colony. Little did they know, that naive dream was soon to become a harsh reality. Our local animals are lucky to have so many great shelters around to help them find caring homes with nice families. One of these outstanding rescue centers is Ahimsa Haven Animal Rescue. It is located in Templeton, MA. This organization is fully staffed by volunteers. It is truly amazing that these wonderful people take their busy lives to help these animals. Some of the animals that they have helped rehome are dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and even a shark! Right now their pets available for adoption are dogs, cats and a ferret. Recently, we “woofed” with Big Gracie, the pit bull terrier. Olivia: “Hi Gracie. What brought you to the amazing Ahimsa Haven?” Big Gracie: “Hi Olivia and Grace. By the way Grace, I love your name! I was surrendered by my lifelong owner, who could no longer take care of me. I miss her very much, but I'm having a lot of fun here. I am just waiting for my new forever home.” Grace: “Hey, Big Gracie! You are a gorgeous tan and white terrier. What are some things you love to do?” Big Gracie: “I absolutely LOVE to exercise. I'm a big girl, about 90 lbs, but I'm trying to work down to my ideal weight of 75 lbs. I’d love to find someone to hike, walk and play with every day.” Olivia: “Describe your ideal family.” Big Gracie: “Well, I adore every human. I get along well with other medium to large pups like me. Little dogs kind of annoy me, especially the yappy ones, and I'd prefer an active family. I don’t really like other animals.” Grace: “I've been dying to ask if you like belly rubs?” Big Gracie just rolls over with her big doggy smile, and we snuggle, giving her the love she deserves. Big Gracie is SO special, she has no adoption fee! Do you have a little room in your life for a new furry friend? If you'd like to snuggle with this big love bug yourself, visiting hours are Saturdays 6 to 8pm and Sundays 2 to 4pm. For more information other available pets, and adoption applications, please go to www.ahimsahaven.org. Ahimsa has a wishlist of things the animals need. Here are some of the items: Paper towels, hand sanitizer, trash bags, and dish soap. For cats: Scoopable kitty litter, kitten nursing kits, KMR milk replacer for kittens, disposable foil pans (they make great litter boxes!), stainless steel litter scoops, stainless steel steam table pans (litter boxes!), and catnip. For dogs: Canned dog food. For all: Frontline/Advantage/Advantix topical flea product. Next issue, we will interview another sweetheart from Ahimsa Haven Animal Rescue. We hope someday all animals will have a wonderful home, but for now, we'd like to help the ones that still don’t.
