The Outsiders
Conflict & Resolution: Chapters 11-12
Wrapping It Up!
In the final chapter of The Outsiders, several difficult situations in the novel are worked
out. This concluding part of the plot where the author ties up loose ends is sometimes
called the denouement.
Directions
Examine each of the following problems (conflicts) resolved in chapter 12 of the novel.
First, list who was involved in the conflict (character and another character, character
and himself or herself, character and society, character and fate). Then, briefly
describe the outcome of each conflict on the lines labeled “Resolution.” Finally, give
your opinion about the way things turned out. If you wish, offer a possible alternative.
Example
Problem: Ponyboy cannot relate to Bob.
a. Who is involved in the conflict: Ponyboy and his own prejudices against the
Socs._____________________________________________________________
b. Resolution: Ponyboy sees Bob as a human being with flaws, appealing traits,
and feelings._____________________________________________________________
c. Are you satisfied with this resolution? Why or why not?
Yes. As he has with Cherry and Randy, Pony is seeing beyond Bob’s Soc___
stereotype. This seems to me to show Pony’s intelligence and maturity____
