2017 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FIGURE SKATER OPPORTUNITIES GENERAL TRYOUTINFORMATION
The following information applies to all skater opportunities. Please read carefully, as these will be strictly enforced. TRYOUT DETAILS: 







Registration Fees are as follows. Registration Fees include costume (skater may keep), ice rental, and production cost. Payment is due at the time of tryouts. Refunds will not be given once the skater is selected, regardless of the reason. o
Smucker’s Skating Spectacular ‐ $100 o
Sweeper ‐ $200 o
Presenter ‐ $200 o
Opening Ceremony ‐ $275 Skater must attend the tryout scheduled for October 2, 2016. Location TBD. Application deadline: September 5, 2016. Tryout rink location and tryout time will be released by the middle of August. Skater should arrive “competition ready”, and consider this a performance on and off the ice. No parents will be allowed in tryout area – there will be adult volunteers assisting the skaters throughout the tryout. Applicants will be evaluated both on and off the ice. Applicants will be selected based on skills demonstrated at the tryout sessions. GENERALEXPECTATIONS





All practices are mandatory. Missing any practice will result in disqualification and no refund will be given. o EXCEPTION: The only exception to this rule is for the Opening Ceremonies participants. One (1) excused absence is allowed prior to January 1, 2017, notification must be sent via email. If more than 1 practice is missed prior to January 1, 2017, the skater will be disqualified and no refund will be given. After January 1, 2017, all practices must be attended in order to participate in the Opening Ceremonies. During the U.S Championships, selected skaters will not be allowed a chaperone or parent to accompany them on the arena event floor or backstage area. Most participation opportunities do not include event tickets for the skater, friends, or family. All skaters will be required to check‐in at designated area and must be picked up at the same area after the session. Each skater and parent/guardian will be required to sign a release form. 2017 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FIGURE SKATER OPPORTUNITIES SWEEPERS
JOB DESCRIPTION: The job of sweeper is to collect stuffed animals and other gifts thrown onto the ice surface after each skater’s performance. Approximately 40‐50 skaters will be chosen from the tryout selection. QUALIFICATIONS: 




Must be at least 8 years old but not older than 13, as of September 1, 2016. Must have passed at least the Pre‐Preliminary moves in the field test as of September 1, 2016. Must be a current member of a USFS Club or USFS Individual Member. Must be able to attend all practices. Must be available for any event January 14‐22, 2017. TRYOUT DETAILS: 

Off Ice: o Must be able to put on and tie skates in less than 2 minutes, without assistance. o Conduct yourself in a respectful, poised and responsible manner. On‐ice – will be judged on: o Skating skills, o Ability to follow directions, o Conduct yourself in a respectful, poised and responsible manner. EXPECTATIONS: 


It is expected that selected skaters will be assigned 3‐4 events, including one Senior event, to be awarded based on tryouts. Please note: the events assigned may not be on the same days or consecutive days. Must be available for practices between January 9‐13, 2017, at the Sprint Center and/or Silverstein Eye Center Arenas (depending on assignments). Missing any practice will result in disqualification and no refund will be given. Skater will receive 1 chaperone ticket for each event that the skater is assigned. 2017 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FIGURE SKATER OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTERS
JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist in the presentation of the medals, gifts and flowers at each award ceremony. Approximately 20‐25 skaters will be chosen from the tryout selection. QUALIFICATIONS: 




Must be between 14 and 24 years of age, as of September 1, 2016. Must have passed at least the Pre‐Juvenile Free Skate or Juvenile Moves in the Field tests. Must be a current member of a USFS Club or USFS Individual Member. Must be able to attend all practices. Must be available for any event January 14‐22, 2017. TRYOUT DETAILS: 


A 500‐word, written essay will need to be submitted with the application to tryout. Subject of the essay should explain “How figure skating has benefited you in areas outside of the rink”. Off Ice: o Must be able to put on and tie skates in less than 2 minutes, without assistance. o Conduct yourself in a respectful, poised and responsible manner. On‐ice – will be judged on: o Skating skills o Presentation/Poise o Ability to follow directions EXPECTATIONS: 

JOB DESCRIPTION: Skaters will have the opportunity to perform in the Opening Ceremonies production number. QUALIFICATIONS: 





As of September 1, 2016, skater must be age 6 or older. Must have passed at least the Pre‐Preliminary Moves in the Field test. Must be a current member of a USFS Club or USFS Individual Member. If part of Synchronized Skating team or Theater on Ice team, skater must choose whether they will tryout as individual or participate on the team. Skaters will not be able to do both. Must be able to attend all practices (dates/times TBD) Must be available for Opening Ceremonies on January 19, 2017. TRYOUT DETAILS: 

Off Ice: o Must be able to put on and tie skates in less than 2 minutes, without assistance. o Conduct yourself in a respectful, poised and responsible manner. On‐ice – will be judged on: o Skating skills o Presentation/Poise o Ability to follow directions o Execution of stops, turns, and basic skating elements (spins and jumps) EXPECTATIONS: 
Must be available for practices October 2016 – January 2017, at the Sprint Center and/or Silverstein Eye Center Arenas. 

JOB DESCRIPTION: Skaters will have the opportunity to perform in the Smucker’s Skating Spectacular production number. QUALIFICATIONS: 




Skater must be age 5 by September 1, 2016. Open to all skaters that have passed USFS Basic 6, by September 1, 2016. Skater will be required to attend 2‐4 practices. Must be a current member of a USFS Club, USFS Individual Member, or USFS Learn to Skate USA (Basic Skills) member. Must be available for the Smucker’s Skating Spectacular on January 22, 2017. TRYOUT DETAILS: 


A maximum of 200 skaters will be chosen. Off Ice: o Must be able to put on and tie skates in less than 2 minutes, without assistance. o Conduct yourself in a respectful, poised and responsible manner. On‐ice – will be judged on: o Skating skills o Presentation/Poise o Ability to follow directions o Execution of stops, turns, and basic skating elements (spins and jumps) EXPECTATIONS: 
Must be available for practices December 2016 – January 2017, at the Sprint Center and/or Silverstein Eye Center Arenas. Missing any practice will result in disqualification and no refund will be given. 
The registration fee will include two (2) tickets to the Smucker’s Skating Spectacular event (one ticket for the skater and one for the skater’s parent/guardian).
