Level 1 Research Assistant As a rule, the work associated with the post is research work (more than 50%) and it relates to the person’s obtaining of academic qualification, Master’s thesis author, no higher university degree. Level 2 Early Stage Researcher, a Master’s degree has been completed. Level 3 Early Stage Researcher 1/3 of the dissertation project has been completed. An article-based dissertation, alternatively either: a) 1/3 of the postgraduate studies have been completed + one of the publications relating to the dissertation has been submitted or b) 1/3 of the postgraduate studies have been completed and the majority of the extensive research material has been collected independently or c) ¾ of the postgraduate studies have been completed (students studying in accordance with the new degree requirements) or 2/3 of the postgraduate studies have been completed (students studying in accordance with the old degree requirements). A monograph, alternatively either: a) 1/3 of the postgraduate studies have been completed + approximately 1/3 of the monograph is written or b) 1/3 of the postgraduate studies have been completed + the majority of the research material has been collected or c) ¾ of the postgraduate studies have been completed (students studying in accordance with the new degree requirements) or 2/3 of the postgraduate studies have been completed (students studying in accordance with the old degree requirements). Level 4 Early Stage Researcher 2/3 of the dissertation project has been completed or a licentiate degree relating to the dissertation project has been completed. An article-based dissertation The dissertation is at the finishing stage, the publications relating to the dissertation have been submitted + the postgraduate studies have been completed. A monograph The manuscript is at the finishing stage + the postgraduate studies have been completed. Job requirement level chart, requirement levels 5–7 NB: The lower level requirements are included in the requirements of the upper levels. The assessment examines the overall requirements associated with the posts, which means that not all criteria have to be met. Level 5 In research-oriented posts, the person has completed a doctoral degree and he or she is expected to become a qualified researcher during the term and to develop the skills needed in the planning and leading of research activities. The professional title in accordance with the career model is Postdoctoral Researcher. Teaching-oriented posts involve a clearly independent teaching post, which includes evaluation and development activities. The professional titles in accordance with the career model are Senior Lecturer (entry level) or University Teacher. A Senior Lecturer holds a doctoral degree; a University Teacher may be a person holding a Master’s or Licentiate’s degree. Level 6 In research-oriented posts, the person is required to be a qualified researcher capable of acting in the role of an independent principal investigator. The research merits associated with the role of a principal investigator require clear demonstrations of post-doctoral publishing activities. The duties include responsible tasks relating to the organisation of research activities and tasks relating to the leading of a research group, acquisition of research funding and establishing networks with the field’s scientific community both at the national and international level. In addition to research activities, the post usually involves tasks relating to Bachelor’s and Master’s level education, for example the supervision of academic theses at the level of advanced studies, and especially tasks associated with postgraduate education and academic administration. The person participates in the development of his or her academic subject. The person also acts in academic and societal expert positions. The person enjoys a recognised position as a result of his or her scientific or societal activities. The professional title in accordance with the career model is Senior Researcher. Teaching-oriented posts involve a post of an experienced teacher with demanding responsibilities. The duties involve teaching extensive courses, responsibility for an academic subject, supervision of academic theses and responsibility for the development of the field’s education. The post also includes tasks relating to the activities of the school/department and organisational tasks. The person’s good teaching skills are a result of long-term teaching experience and pedagogical training. The professional title in accordance with the career model is Senior Lecturer. A person, who teaches extensive courses, has responsibilities at the level of an academic subject, long-term teaching and supervision experience also relating to academic theses, good teaching skills and verified responsibility for the development of the field’s education, may be placed at this level. Level 7 The post is a research and teaching post which is valued within the scientific community. The expanded responsibility is demonstrated through versatile scientific activities or teaching and teaching experience. The duties involve the planning and organisation of research projects, responsibility for the use of resources as well as academic and societal expert positions. The post involves responsibility for postgraduate education or other very extensive educational responsibilities. The person is in charge of supervising doctoral students. The person has versatile teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The person’s post-doctoral publishing activities are extensive and he or she has verifiable skills to take responsibility for a field of research. The person works actively in academic and societal expert positions (peer review, preliminary examination, acting as an opponent, expert positions and positions of trust relating to education and research). The professional titles in accordance with the career model are Senior Lecturer or Senior Researcher.
