Most of Europe at this time is under a dictatorship. Only one country is brave enough to face the German juggernaut of 1940. That country is being led by a hero. While a country is being blown to pieces, this man is initiating his own war plan, while repeating a quote to go down in history, “Keep calm and carry on.” And without the heroics of Winston Churchill, the empire of Great Britain would’ve been finished before any help could come. Therefore, Winston Churchill is a hero because he is willing to admit when he made mistakes, he is persistent, and he was willing to face danger for others. Winston Churchill wouldn’t have become a hero without the willingness to admit the fact that he makes mistakes. He made a mistake in 1915, when he called for an attack on the Gallipoli peninsula in the Ottoman Empire . The mistake made he forced from the position as First Admiralty of the Navy. He once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” I believe that this quote means that if you keep striving forward, whether you completed or failed your goal, makes you courageous. He admitted his miscalculation later and did not protest his removal from office. After World War One was over, Winston Churchill continued with his political career . His continuation of his career in politics shows as well that he is persistent. Also, Winston Churchill was very persistent. He would try again and again, no matter how many times he failed, he wouldn’t give up . He spoke in a speech to the parliament and the British people concerning the imminent invasion by Germany, “We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.” I believe that he meant that he will fight until there is no hope left for victory, and then keep fighting. Winston Churchill believed that no matter what, the British people will defend their homeland. He was also willing to help in anyway possible, just like how he was willing to help in every way possible about twenty years before. Finally, he risked his life for others and his country in World War One . After being fired from his position as First Admiralty of the Navy, he became the commander of the British unit Grenadier Guards, followed by the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He stated one, “Victory at all costs, victory in spite of terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.” I believe he thought that the continuation of mankind required a victor. Winston Churchill believed that if no one won the War to end all Wars, the countries would bleed each other out of human life . Additionally, if he didn’t risk his life for others, he wouldn’t be renowned as a hero today. All in all, if you are willing to admit when you make mistakes, are persistent, and risk your life for others, then you are a hero like Winston Churchill . I believe that Winston Churchill never left the past, always remembered the present, and always considered the future. He learned to from the past and always kept the past in mind. I believe that a hero must help the rest of us adapt to what the world is throwing at us and to look ahead. Just as Winston Churchill said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” Student Example 2 A hero is someone who is an everyday person that puts other in front of them self . The everyday heroes are more common than the accomplished ones, they go into battle fighting for their country, and they are revealed during hard times. Christopher Reeve says, “A hero is someone who in spite of weakness, doubt, or not always knowing the answers goes ahead and overcomes anyway.” This means a hero accomplishes anything even though there may be challenges . Everyone is heroic whether they realize it or not. To start off an everyday hero is more common than an accomplished one. “A hero is born among a hundred, a wise man is found among a thousand, but an accomplished one might not be found even among a hundred thousand men.” Quote by Plato. What this means is that heroes that are accomplished are not as common as an everyday hero or wise man. The everyday hero is the one that goes unreported. Also there is a difference between the common heroes and the accomplished ones. The difference is that both are not common day people, someone who finishes high school and goes of to college, or says no to drugs is the common hero, I’m not saying they aren’t true heroes, but the accomplished ones like Abraham Lincoln or Frederick Douglass is a little more important in my opinion. A hero that puts others in front of them self is like a person that goes into battle to fight for their country. “It doesn’t take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle.” By Norman Schwarzkopf. Meaning that the general who orders the men into battle isn’t the hero, the people going into the battle is. Although the person who orders the men is a hero it its own way but the men going into battle are the real heroes. The general could still be a hero but they don’t need to be one in order to do their job but you do need to be a hero to go into battle. To top it off a hero is revealed during the hard times or during battle. “Hard time don’t create heroes. It is in the hard times the the ‘hero’ within us is revealed.” By Bob Riley. What this quote means is that the specific hard times does not create the hero but during the hard times when the hero within an everyday person is revealed or the hero is brought out of us. Everyone is a hero though they may not know it yet but it will show eventually. This is someone like Martin Luther King Jr. He became a hero during the hard times where not everyone was considered equal yet he still fought for what he believed in. You could call a hero someone who people look up to because they are selfless or a someone who puts others needs in front of their own. But the common heros are not the ones I am talking about it is the ones that aren’t as common, the ones that are revealed during the hard times, go into battle fighting for their country. These are the heroes that put others needs in front of their own. Student Example 3 Derek Jeter as most would say is a hero. He was not only the Yankees captain, praised for his clutch hitting and fielding, he was as humble and nice as could be. He set the example for kids looking up to him. Derek Jeter is my hero. What is a hero? A hero is anybody who does something out of the ordinary to help someone or something for the better most likely going unseen or boasted about. A hero is also someone who sets an example for others, or someone who is humble in the presence of others. You don’t have to be some big star to be a hero, you could be some ordinary guy on the street helping a random old lady you don’t even know across the street. Heroes are everyday, common people. Most of what they do goes unheralded, unappreciated.”Oliver Stone. Heroes are the people that don’t care what others think when they’re talking to someone who’s all alone because the common population thinks they’re weird, no...heroes are the people that make a point to cheer that person up and make them happy. Heroes are not the kind of people that sit around doing nothing all day, they get out and help the world, they don’t necessarily have to have super powers, all they need is a brain and some hands. These kind of people are the ones we need to try and be copying, not the big brat movie stars. A hero is someone who, you look up to and want to be like, I personnally have noticed that most kids look up to big movie stars who just waste away their money without a care in the world, when they could be donating to charities or starting their own charity. I’m not syaing that every rich person is stuck up, all of them are very kind and use their money and influence for good. Oliver Stone gives an example of a good example of a celebrity hero when he says “The celebrity who remains modest and treats other with respect, or uses his position to help society.” My personal hero is Derek Jeter People who have met him say that he’s the most humble and kind they’ve ever met. He’s not stuck up like most major athletes, he also frequently signs and donates to charities or auctions all over New York as the yankees captain o r Mr. clutch he’s one of the greatest short stops ever but he doesn’t let any of that get to his head. He stays kind humble and modest because he knows that there are kids out there looking up to him and he knows that he’s setting the car. Another great athlete is Russel Wilson, coming off his first superbowl win, he as modest and humble as ever. He doesn’t kiss his biceps everytime he scores like some quarter backs, he doesn’t gloat to other players he’s just out there to play hard and do whats best for his team and that’s why I think alot of kids look up to him. Alot of my friends say “Oh when I grow up i want to be just like Russel Wilson” because they see how good of an example he’s setting. Ruseel never let’s the win get to his head it’s always a team win whether he got 100 yards rushing and 300 yards passing or not he stays humble. The main part of being a hero to me is being humble . No one wants to look up to someone who’s pushing people around because they think they’re so cool and better than everyone. No, people look up to others that treat others with kindness and never brag about how good they are, just how good the other are. Oliver Stone states that “We should allow for the heroic impulse.” “And we must allow our young generation to strive for virtue, instead of ridiculing it.” Big name people who are obsessed with popularity need to realize that being rude and boasting about your succes and putting down others failures is only going to make you less popular and taking away the status of heroism because no one likes you. Heriosm is all about likeability and bragging about yourself is not very likeable at all in fact most people strongly diselike it. Heroes need to stay humble because rude heroes turn into villians. You may not realize but heroes are all over the place in your normal life, you don’t notice because of their ability to stay humble but trust me, if you watch close enough you’ll start to see the little things that common people or celebrities do to make themsleves heroic without even knowing it. Trust me, they’re there setting examples for you and others. So in the future, make sure that you stay humble and try to do atleast little things such as picking up the garbage you find on the floor or sitting by someone who has no friends, think about your impact on others and if you could be considered a hero or not.
